to be really bloody tired of people getting on their high horses about smoking, whilst drinking their 3rd glass of wine?

I get it - smoking isn't a great habit. But neither is drinking, drinking alcohol has plenty of harmful consequences - not just long term health problems, but instant in some cases - i.e people often make bad choices when they are drunk, drunk people are unpleasant to be around.

Disclaimers -

For those of you who will say 'I only drink half a thumble of wine a night, so it's not the same' - One cigarette a night, or a couple at a weekend - unlikely to do much harm.

For those of you who will say that you have lost somebody to a smoking related illness, I do appreciate how awful that is and I'm sorry for your loss. However, I have lost two family members to drinking related matters, and I do not constantly lecture people who are buying a bottle of wine.

I am not saying it's okay to smoke around children, or to smoke all over people who don't smoke.

I don't have a problem with smoking or drinking, but I find people who judge smokers who have no problem with getting drunk very infuriating.

Okay, so now I'll be flamed.

I'm also a considerate smoker/drinker so I don't give a flying fuck either fanjo, some people will find anything to be precious about. Whilst picking on me theyre leaving some other poor sod alone Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/10/2012 13:30

I drink and smoke and so one high horse cancels out the other

Mimstar · 18/10/2012 13:31

Grin Funnys, it's the best way..

Its not that simple Minstar. Of course its someone's choice if they want to smoke in their own house, but it means that their family or friends over for dinner have to suffer the consequences.

Charliefarlie1192 · 18/10/2012 13:32

I don't know many people who still smoke indoors at home either though......in fact I don't know any

Mimstar · 18/10/2012 13:33

Me neither actually Charlie everybody I know goes outside for a cig..

My main objection to people smoking is how fucking rude it makes them. A "friend" of mine came to my house last week, it was freezing and she just wandered off into the garden to have a smoke. That meant I had to get my coat on and put DS's shoes on as he was desperate to go out with her. Who the holy fuck just wanders off into the garden in the middle of a conversation?? Could she not have waiting to smoke until she left 20 minutes later, is she that addicted? Similarly if we go to the pub the smokers always want to sit outside in the cold, or they get up halfway through a conversation and bugger off outside. I just couldn't be bothered with them. There's no way I'd dictate where others sit or leave a friend sitting in a pub on their own like a lemon and I don't expect others to do that to me just because they're too lazy or thick to stop smoking. I avoid smoker "friends" (thankfully only have a couple) because they just piss me off.

Jusfloatingby · 18/10/2012 13:33

I know some. It ain't nice.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 18/10/2012 13:33

Think my choice of cigs maybe offensive though Grin

Fuck it. I have a drink in one hand and a cig in the other on Saturday nights.

ClippedPhoenix · 18/10/2012 13:34

I also don't know anyone that smokes in doors anymore so what on earth are you on about families being inflicted?

If they are (usually the older generation) then don't bloody go Grin

3monkeys3 · 18/10/2012 13:35

It depends on how you drink though, doesn't it? Smoking is just generally gruesome, but drinking can be fun, sociable, enjoyable in the right circumstances. Plus has a few bits and bobs that are beneficial to health. Of course people abuse it, but plenty of people abuse food too and various other things that have potential to be dangerous. I don't think it is comparable - not directly anyway.

Inneedofbrandy · 18/10/2012 13:35

My nan smokes indoors, she's lived there over 40 years and it stinks, there's a film o nicotine over everything to. But I expect it's cleaner then an alcoholics flat filled with empty bottles with someone who can't be fucked to get out of bed unless for another drink.

Jusfloatingby · 18/10/2012 13:35

Also, what about if you're standing at a bus stop or in the queue for an ATM. It's really annoying to have smoke being blown all over you. And don't start me on people who push into a crowded bus shelter on a wet day and immediately light a fag.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 18/10/2012 13:36

cailin I have a cold from going out and standing in the cold for a cig! I don't expect anyone to come with me though. I don't really have non smoker friends but my mum is anti smoking so I have to leave the house and garden to have one.

ClippedPhoenix · 18/10/2012 13:36

I no longer buy packet of ciggys these days Fanjo, far too bloody expensive. I go for rolleys and use liquorish papers so they look like little cheroots Grin

Scholes34 · 18/10/2012 13:36

One of the most scary things I exposed my children to when they were about 7, 6 and 4 was driving through Chesterfield about 10.00 o'clock at night. We'd been diverted off the by-pass and had to go through the town centre and the children had woken up. They were asking what was wrong with all the people, who were falling all over the place going from pub to pub. I explained briefly about alcohol and locked the doors of the car!

A few months later, DD (7) was talking about some street drinkers she'd seen outside the local swimming pool and was describing it to DH. "You know, Dadddy, that place where everyone is drunk." "Where do you mean?" piped up DS (6), "Chesterfield?"

Jusfloatingby · 18/10/2012 13:37

Clipped, you seem to think that because you don't know anyone who smokes indoors then no one else should know anyone either. Of course there are people who still smoke indoors and, as a result, are forcing their kids, partners, visiting friends to inhale their second hand smoke.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 18/10/2012 13:38

just see that sort of thing annoys me. If I want a cig and its raining I will stand in the rain away from others. I decided to smoke not them.

I am infact a considerate smoker and a friendly drunk!

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 18/10/2012 13:39

clipped im too lazy for rolling. I don't have enough hands when I have a drink in one Grin

Mimstar · 18/10/2012 13:39

But that's not what we are debating Justfloatingby - as I've said, I don't think it's the same. I smoke outside in my back garden after DD has gone to bed, my neighbours on either side smoke, so they aren't fussed about this either. I have 3 a night..tell me, why that is a problem?

OP posts:
CailinDana · 18/10/2012 13:39

Do you agree though InSPsFanjo, that smokers leaving a friend in the pub to go out and smoke is really rude? I've actually been out with three friends, all smokers who went en masse to smoke leaving me entirely on my own! The second time they did it I just went home.

Jusfloatingby · 18/10/2012 13:39

Fair enough InSP. I wish there were more smokers like you Sad

ClippedPhoenix · 18/10/2012 13:40

I never said that so don't try to put words in my mouth justfloating. Have a wine or fag or something, you're getting a bit OTT now Grin

Jusfloatingby · 18/10/2012 13:41

Mimstar, we're demonstrating why people give out more about smokers than drinkers. Of course there are considerate smokers who don't impact on others. But there are lots of smokers who still light up around other people causing discomfort. However, the majority of drinkers don't drink in a way that has a negative impact on other people.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 18/10/2012 13:41

I went to a pub where there was 3 of us. Only one of didn't smoke. So we went for a cig separatly so the non smoker wasn't sat on her own and we didn't want to drag her out with us.

I do agree that is rude as you don't go outwith friends and leave them on their own half the night.
