Who is being unreasonable here?

My dh goes running twice a week. He has recently been working hard on increasing his distance and currently runs around 12km at each run - this is the furthest he has ever run. He has randomly decided to take the morning off work tomorrow and run a half marathon - not an official race, just go on his own to attempt the distance. I am very worried about this - he will be alone, we live relatively remotely and the route he has planned is along country roads, so he is not going to have people around him, he has done no specific training to gear up for it (just his 2 runs a week) - he basically has not prepared at all! I asked him about carb loading and he struggled, I asked him if he even had a drinking bottle to take with him and he said no (he doesn't take a drink with him usually)! I think he is being unreasonable! I have no problem with him tackling the distance, but I feel he should do it for the first time at official race, with medical help and people nearby, having done some specific training and preparation! He thinks I am being unreasonable and am spoiling his mindset by being negative!

I've ran 10k's for a while now and very recently have started running half marathons. For the 10ks I don't bother with water or energy snacks. With Marathon distance, I take my mobile, a pound coin, my reflective jacket, some jelly sweets, small amount of water.

I think it's perfectly normal for him to build up to half marathon distance without being in a race. I do however think he needs to build it up slowly with one slightly longer run each weekend. It would be best to do a couple of weekends of 8 milers, then a couple of weekends of 10 or 11 milers, then move on to half marathon distance. At his present stage he might find that he can run 8 or 9 miles and then do a combination of run and walk the rest of the distance.

When I ran my first hm race- fully prepared - I collapsed in a heap 200m before the finish. It was mostly the heat I think but I was carted off to the ambulance, I was fine but I wouldn't want to have collapsed and not had attention.
Race situations are different - Tomorrow I suspect he will simply stop/ walk for a bit when he's had enough. Make sure he takes his phone and also that you know where he's going.
He's being pretty daft tbh. I suspect be will get back rather knackered and realise that suddenly doing a hm when he can only run just over half the distance, wasn't the best idea.

Oh and INSIST he takes water or energy drink and ideally some jelly babies or similar with him.

Ps sorry op did not mean to alarm. I pushed myself to the max that day (great north run) and was determined to beat dh- I was way ahead but of course he went past me when I was in the ambulance. It was 24 degrees that day and race v different to running on your own with nothing to beat.
He'll come back realising that it would be much better to increase distances gradually- recommend 1k per week.

Let us know how he gets on!

Erm, the world record for a half marathon is 58:23 - so "just under the hour", Start planning a trip to the Rio Olympics!

BlatherskiteOfTheLivingDead · 18/10/2012 12:58

I have a feeling he's miscalculated his route if he did 13 miles in just under an hour!

HeadlessForHalloween · 18/10/2012 13:03

In under an hour? Is he speedy gonzales? Grin

HeadlessForHalloween · 18/10/2012 13:03

Glad he got home in one piece though even if he miscalculated his route

RubyFakeNails · 18/10/2012 13:04

In under an hour?! I think not.

Unless you mean the extra distance added just under and hour.

Why would he take the morning off to run for an hour?

3monkeys3 · 18/10/2012 13:24

I meant 2 hours! Sorry!

The playlist I did him was 1 hour 42 mins and he listened to all of it, plus 3 songs again, which totals 1 hour 48 mins! So just under 2 hours (well, quite a bit under actually). Sorry for typo - not sure whether it was me or my mac!
