to not want to pick a battle with my DS...

DS2 about to turn 2. The other week DH converted his cot into a bed as cot was getting very dangerous (he was climbing out). Anyway, since the conversion he has refused to go to sleep in his bed. Instead he takes himself off to the spare room where he tucks himself in (and even turns the light off) then goes to sleep really happily.

I know I have to deal with this at some point but I can't face it. At the moment everyone is sleeping well and for the first time in 3 years my relationships are not affected by sleep deprivation. Also, he is stubborn like I have never seen - DH and I both attempted to get him to use his own bed at different times and we were up and down the house about 40 times before I caved in and let him go to spare room and on the other occasion DH fell asleep next to him on the floor they were both so tired.

Would I be unreasonable to let him sleep there or will I be creating a nightmare for myself later (any ideas on how to get him to use his own bed will be willingly accepted). He has only had his bed for 2 weeks.

why cant he sleep in the spare room? if its not dangerous and hes not hurting anyone i'd let it go

radiohelen · 17/10/2012 15:11

Sounds like he's chosen his bedroom to me! If you don't want the fight then move his stuff in there!

SugariceAndScary · 17/10/2012 15:13

Why make life hard for yourself?

If he's sleeping happily in the spare bedroom why change things?

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 17/10/2012 15:13

Whats wrong with the spare bed?

pjmama · 17/10/2012 15:15

Leave him to it and enjoy your own sleep!

ClippedPhoenix · 17/10/2012 15:16

Yes, OP seems he prefers that room and that bed, it's "spare" so what's the worry?

AMumInScotland · 17/10/2012 15:29

He's sleeping, and not causing any particular inconvenience. This counts as a win! Let him sleep there if that works for him.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 17/10/2012 15:34

Why is it a problem if he sleeps in the spare room? What do you have stored in there??

SugariceAndScary · 17/10/2012 15:35

I love the idea of him tucking himself in and switching off his own light and thinking 'Mother, just let me sleep' Grin

RubyCreakingGates · 17/10/2012 15:36

So would he sleep on his bed in the spare room, or on the spare bed in his room?

Maybe he just lkes the spare room better! I'd just ask him if he'd like to move in there. Sleep is a precious commodity, grasp the opportunity while you can!

monkeysbignuts · 17/10/2012 15:39

leave him to it lol. If he is sleeping then that's great :)

KazzaRazza · 17/10/2012 16:46

Have you tried moving him to his own bed once he's asleep?

If he wakes up in the morning in 'his own bed' then over time he may start sleeping in his own bed.

mummyonvalium · 17/10/2012 17:07

The only problem with the spare room as his room is that it is really nice with an en suite and has a double bed (which is where he likes to sleep) As a result when guests come that is the room we use.

Mobly · 17/10/2012 17:12

Awww, I'd let him have the spare room.

advisemewisely · 17/10/2012 17:14

Sod the occasional guests!!!

ThreeWheelsGood · 17/10/2012 17:16

Let him have the spare room, explain in good time if you'll be having guests so he understands he'll need to use his own bed when they're staying.

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2012 17:17

Does he have a bed guard and is there any chance of him getting in and wrecking the bathroom first thing in the morning?

Roseformeplease · 17/10/2012 17:18

What about making a fuss of "his" bed and buying new duvet (Thomas the Tank Engine or whatever he likes) and making a fuss of it being "his" bed? I agree that he is doing no harm but you don't want him there long term so will have to come up with a solution. Perhaps he feels he is a "big boy" now and sees the double bed as being an adult bed (like yours) whereas the cot bed is still where he slept as a baby. In any case, enjoy your sleep.

NotWilliamBoyd · 17/10/2012 17:19

You lot are soooooo much nicer than me!

See, I'd worry about major fall-out the next time you have guests to stay. I think I'd let him sleep in the spare room.......... whilst doing something (fresh paint? New bedding?) to his own room and talking to him about 'when he moves back into his amazing special bedroom'.

Otherwise I'd worry that he'd decide that he gets to make all the big decisions.

Ah, crossposts with Rose!

spidermanspiderman · 17/10/2012 18:17

My ds thought his bed was broken when we took the sides off and refused to sleep there too. May be go choose a new big bed together.

RubyCreakingGates · 17/10/2012 19:19

Does he feel safer in a double bed? Perhaps he's scared of falling out of his own little one?

SugariceAndScary · 17/10/2012 19:25

My ds3 had our old double bed. It was fantastic and when he went through his phase of not sleeping as a toddler I just got in with him.

CaliforniaLeaving · 17/10/2012 19:32

My middle child went straight into a double bed when he was about 18months old. He loved it, never climbed out or made a fuss and slept great. Give him the big bed it's probably more comfy that a toddler bed with a cot mattress on.

Iggly · 17/10/2012 19:36

Get him a proper bed instead of a converted cot? And how often do you have guests?

I'd be happy if ds tucked himself in at 2!! He sounds adorable.
