why am i seeing so many more 'likes' of things bashing benefit claimants or declaring that 'all mothers want 5 minutes alone with bridgers' or saying he should be hanged on live tv for us all to see or asking why we test products on animals when there are so many peadophiles in prison? i get that people are angry and of course recent news stories have upset me but there is no part of me that wants to witness a death or to inflict a horrendous death on anyone. i dont think i am alone in feeling like this but it has really surprised me how sick some people who claim to be angered by others' 'sickness' actually are.

Haven't read the whole thread but I too am incensed by people saying things like 'I hate paedeophiles' OK, I think we can take that as a given.

The other thing I loathe is when people who put pictures on of (for example) a Downs baby and the quote says something like 'I'm cute too' Arghhhhhh! My MIL does this and I feel like unfriending her which is obviously not possible sadly THIS IS EXTREMELY PATRONISING YOU SILLY BINT!

DuelingFanjo What did John Peel do? Confused

KenLeeeeeee · 16/10/2012 15:23

I wondered that too, redexpat. Am I just really oblivious?

DuelingFanjo · 16/10/2012 15:25

John Peel wrote in his autobiography about young teenage girls and also married a 15 year old in America.

I don't have anyone who posts stuff like this, but nowadays my FB friends are either family or actual friends. However, I do have one friend who could be the poster girl for first world problems. She's really a very sweet person, but it is a bit annoying to see her complaining about quite trivial things. Today's gripe is that carpet fitters left a piece of underlay behind when they fitted her new stair carpet - apparently she had to walk all the way to the bin with it. Gosh, I don't know how she copes ...

I deactivated my account last night for this exact reason. It makes my blood boil

I've been truly shocked recently by comments by a relative on facebook about a deceased and deeply loved family membr, only found it as someone else had liked it. Horrific and will cause a family rift lasting decades.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 16/10/2012 17:21

I started a post yesterday about a similar thing, as I spotted that one of my FB friends had 'liked' a post by a group supporting/campaigning for a retrial for the convicted rapist Ched Evans. I read the post and the comments under it and they were horrific, clearly posted by misogynistic, knuckle-dragging rape apologists.

It never fails to amaze me how ignorant some people are. In the past few months I've noticed a lot of people 'liking' various threads about lazy scroungers getting benefits when they should be working/disabled people don't need to claim benefits if they can take part in things like the Paralympics/give me five minutes with Bridger and I'll find out where the body is etc etc. It's never ending. I don't want to cancel my FB account because I have family abroad and like seeing most of my friends' statuses but I don't want to see shit like that on my timeline. I wish FB hadn't changed so you see things like this. It's just so depressing to see what complete arseholes some people are.

CoteDAzur · 16/10/2012 17:23

OP - I hope you realize that you only see what your friends do/say on FB, and therefore this just means that you have more "idiots" as friends now than before Grin

BeingBooyhoo · 16/10/2012 17:33

good point cote! Grin

i had just noticed a sudden increase in the amount of unfriending i was doing and wondered why this was happening. i haven't accepted any new friends so it is obviously a change in the existing friends behaviour that wasn't happening or at least visible to me before.

Why dont I know more people like there are on this thread on facebook?

My newsfeed is always full of this rubbish aswell, it doesn suprise me about certain people.

WellHello · 16/10/2012 22:21

*does...

hiviolet · 17/10/2012 12:23

If you don't want to unfriend a person, you can at least untick "show in news feed" so you don't get to see the shit they like and comment on. I've had to do this.

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 17/10/2012 15:24

Exactly, word for word, what softkitty said. Except that my post about it was a few weeks ago Grin

My personal favourite was "hang all immigrants". My legal immigrant BIL loved that one.

fuzzysnout · 17/10/2012 15:24

Personally I'm pleased to find out what idiots some people really are as it allows me to 'unfriend' them in RL Grin

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 17/10/2012 15:27

Did see a slightly funny one yesterday, but then it starts to look a bit like internet bullying, which is not exactly great either. Woman posts on 10 downing sts fb (Hmm) "free methadone for addicts, yet i have to pay for calpol", followed by 500 posts of "umm, no you dont, its free on prescription"
