to think that jeans should fit the age that they say

I have been looking for jeans for my fairly normal sized 13 year old but have really struggled to get a pair that actually fit her. She found some that she liked in Gap but I have not seen many 13 year olds that would actually fit into their age 13 jeans. They seem to be made for very skinny children!! Is it just me? Do other people struggle to find childrens clothes that fit their children?

Thing is in Gap, for example, they only go up to age 13 so she would need an adult size and these are twice as expensive!!!! This seems to be discrimination against normal sized children!

'discrimination against normal sized children'

Hmm
MsNobodyAgain · 14/10/2012 17:14

YABU

I have twins aged 7. One fits in age 6-7 clothes, one fits in size 9-10 clothes.

lifesamystery · 14/10/2012 18:13

My dd must just be very overweight then as everyone else finds the gap jeans way too big. Odd, as I thought she was quite the opposite.

I buy my dcs clothes based on their size and not their age. This is because for the same age I can find a wide range of sizes.

monkeysbignuts · 14/10/2012 18:28

but not all kids are the same size for their age??

GobblersKnob · 14/10/2012 18:36

How would it be possible? Confused

It's like wanting to go into a shop and buy a jumper labelled for an adult woman.

Dd is 4 and wears a 5-6 for length as she is tall, but needs belts and waist adjusters or stuff just falls down.

Ds is 8 and fits around a 6-7 as he is quite short, at least being too small they tend to fit him around the waist though Grin

madhairday · 14/10/2012 18:44

DD is 12 and has a pair of gap 'long and lean' jeans in age 13 which are just ok on the waist (others fall down on her, these still loose but not so bad) - she hates the elastic waist button ones as they always bunch so much. However these jeans are a bit too short for her so now have to look at age 14 or poss adult size 6? It's all confusing.

I find different shops hugely vary as well. Next have always been far too big for dd, same with Asda. I've had trouble most of her life with clothes that fit as she's always gone along 91st centile for height and under 25th for weight. I wish more places would do comfortable drawstring trousers with a drawstring that actually works and isn't a useless decoration on the front Hmm

YABU, because children vary, shops vary, sizes vary. It's a case of trial and error, but annoying all the same. I'd try Next or M and S.

WineOhWhy · 14/10/2012 18:45

Not sure how they could do that! The girls in my DD's Y4 class range in height from 124cm to 147cm. Both my DCs are on the skinny side and we find GAP trousers too loose.

Although my DCs are smallish for their age, I do have a mental block about buying clothes that claim to for an age younger than they are (eg buying age 6 for an 8 year old). Hence, their clothes tend to fit them a year or 2 after I buy them! As someone else suggested, they shoudl label clothes by height rather than age (I think some shops do that) - that would help me with my mental block, although would not necessarily help with the skinnyness issue!

Startailoforangeandgold · 14/10/2012 18:50

If teens clothes actually fitted most teens, the smallest 30% of women would be able to get VAT free clothes.

Since most Woman's stuff is way more than 20% dearer than kids, both the government and the shops win if teen clothes are too narrow to fit any girl with hips.

piprabbit · 14/10/2012 18:50

I've just had a look at the Gap Kids sizing guide and it seems that my 8yo DD would be wearing their 12-13yo jeans.

I could try forcing her to wear the 8yo ones instead - as capri pants.

monkeysbignuts · 14/10/2012 19:02

lol Pip
My daughter is 3 (just turned at the end of July) in Next she is age 4 in asda age 3-4 in sainsburys age 4-5.
My son is 5 & wears mostly age 6-7 clothes. every kid is different & so are the shop sizes. But I find this with adult clothing too, not just kids.

bedmonster · 14/10/2012 19:18

Have had this trouble in gap today. Bought jeans for ds nearly 1. Granted he has been in 12-18 months for 2 months, but the gap ones wouldn't go past his knees. Kind lady in gap said she would always recommend going a size up in jeans for small kids as they consistently came up tight. Made me wonder why no one has restructured the sizing.

IneedAgoldenNickname · 14/10/2012 19:46

I just measured ds2, and checked his sizes on vertbaudet, just out of interest. His height is 5-6 years, has a 3 year old size waist, 5 year old chest, and hips smaller than they say for age 2 Hmm weird thing is he is totally in proportion to look at, although you wouldn't think it based on those measurements!

BlathersNightOfTheLivingDead · 14/10/2012 19:49

I had the same issue Nickname. DS was age 5 height and age 2 waist. The slim fit jeans from there still fit him nicely though

IneedAgoldenNickname · 14/10/2012 20:02

Will try some from there thanks

BlathersNightOfTheLivingDead · 14/10/2012 20:18

They keep sending me discount codes. If I get one tomorrow, I'll post it for you Nickname

BlathersNightOfTheLivingDead · 14/10/2012 20:36

Here you go - 20% OFF + FREE P&P if you spend over £30 use code 5165

shattereddreams · 14/10/2012 20:39

Blathers could you pm me the code too please? Been meaning to try their skinny jeans for ages but they are a bit too ££.

DS is 2.4 and out of nappies and I think this is part of the problem, all clothes for age 2 are factoring in a nappy. I can't get any track suits that fit, they drop to the floor, don't even part stay up.
He's wearing H&M age 12 m trousers but they are getting a bit short. Even these are too big on the waist.
M&S are ok for skinny, but someone already mentioned they come up short for it.

Tights for a skinny girl is no fun either. But I look at my kids and I don't see skinny. I see average (borne out by their centiles) but I struggle endlessly to find clothes that fit. It's all too wide.

I don't think it's as easy as finding a store that suits because they manufacture different lines in different continents and the sizing varies enormously.
I don't buy tights in H&M made in South Korea because they have GIANT children. But the ones made in Turkey are pretty good if a tad too short Grin

shattereddreams · 14/10/2012 20:39

Oh, cross post. Thank you!

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 14/10/2012 20:41

ds has just started school wearing age 2 trousers.

just one of those things.

BlathersNightOfTheLivingDead · 14/10/2012 20:45

You're welcome :)

I buy my kids jeans with turns ups is a size too small and then unturn the turn ups. Extra length for a small waist :)

IneedAgoldenNickname · 14/10/2012 20:56

Thanks, I'll get shipping as soon as I can :-)

IneedAgoldenNickname · 14/10/2012 20:57

Shipping? Shopping!!

lifesamystery · 14/10/2012 20:57

Hmm, wonder how many people are being honest here? Obviously lots of people just wanting to show off how skinny their children are. Piprabbit, you are the only one with any sense to check the actual sizes - even I didn't do that!!

And yes, I realise that all sizes are different and also buy clothes that fit, rather than only look at one that says it is a certain size or for a certain age. I still think, though, that a garment marked age 13 should fit an AVERAGE 13 year old.

OP posts:
Goldenbear · 14/10/2012 20:59

lifesamystery, I doubt your DD is 'very overweight'. Perhaps it's her teenage figure that means the trousers don't fit properly. A lot of posters are commenting on their young or very young children finding clothes that are their age range to fit them, it is not a comparative scenario to clothes fitting a girl appropriately that is going through puberty. IME GAP clothes are quite small or are very specific in sizing I.e age 3 rather than 3-4.
