Not actually baby - attached feeding, but you know...

Discussed this earlier & did some research about nicotine etc in milk .... But I only know one person that did it , but lots who would go out and drink alcohol and still feed etc

Remember not to leave your lighter lying around. Your baby could find it and accidentally (or deliberately!) set the house alight.

You have been warned.

Onken · 12/10/2012 20:56

justRead - you did exactly the same as me. Outisde for fags then straight to breast feed. No excema, asthma in any of us.

Maybe we were just lucky. dc in teens now.

BertieBotts · 12/10/2012 20:57

YY lighters are a big issue. House fires and injuries to children are something like twice as likely to happen in homes where there is a smoker because of the higher likelihood of having lighters or matches around.

LucieMay · 12/10/2012 21:05

I did yeah. No excuses but I was totally on my own and I just couldn't cope with a baby and trying to quit smoking again and not drinking. Sometimes a fags was the only thing that kept me going. Not proud of it but I just wasn't strong enough.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 12/10/2012 21:05

Actually, now I think of it I did see some very interesting research on the effects of nicotine on spiders spinning webs, compared when compared to the effects of caffeine on spiders spinning webs, the caffeine spiders were a lot more disorganised and erratic- caffeine is also excreted in breast milk. Perhaps those who consider nicotine in breast milk to be a major problem should check their own caffeine intake?
Not judging anyone here, just saying maybe we should all make sure our own house is in order before questioning the habits of others?

I was merely stating my opinion to what sirboobalot said about bfing and smoking being better for babies than formula feeding, it was meant as a joke Hmm

SarahJinx · 12/10/2012 21:13

So, I stopped in August 2012, the day I got the BFP. I was and think will always be 'a smoker, first thing in the morning, 20 a day every day -twice that on a night out, girl'. I probably even look like a smoker. DS is 17 months old now. I'm always going to want to do it, I love the smokes, I'd never have stopped if I hadn't got pregs. I want one all the time, the minute I start, I'll be knee deep in twenty a day again.

So, my point - if thats you, don't do it, BF'ing - meh, its eight fucking quid odd a pack.....!

I LOVED a fag.

Mmmmmmm

So your point is Sarah, I loved it & stopped, so you can & more importantly - YOU SHOULD.

Your point is, actually, no point, your experience is an example of what was possible for your choice, you chose to stop smoking, despite loving it, because you saw that as the best choice for you.

Others - & I include myself - chose to continue to smoke - it's a choice, it is possible to chose to give up, equally, it's possible to chose to carry on smoking.

This is why I don't hold with Allan Carr (I didn't buy the book - I have never wanted to give up - a 'friend' bought it for me) - I read the first chapter & hurled it across the room.

Of course, if you have read Allan Carr & it worked for you, you would nod your head for my shame & sorrow.

I just like smoking - I like the way it feels, I really like the way it feels. When it fills my lungs & I exhale slowly, it feels better then few other things.

Really.

It's a very sensual thing.

The only thing I like better than cigarettes?

Cigars.

I know it's vilified, I know it's not great for my health, but I think I'll always fucking love it (& accept the inevitable consequences).

Smokers come in very handy if you have a birthday cake and need to light some candles, though. I think I made my contribution to my employer's annual conference not by turning up, nor by entertaining the delegates with my wit and charm, but by being the only person around with a lighter when one of the trustees produced a birthday cake for our chair...

edam · 12/10/2012 21:42

(obviously the birthday cake was planned, but the poor forgetful non-smokers had forgotten to bring any matches to light the candles.)

SarahJinx · 12/10/2012 21:42

No no, my point was so not about 'should'.

My only point was to the OP, and it was only, its bloody expensive and it's really bloody hard to give up and if you want to go there, consider that too.

That was it. \No should about it, I absolutely wouldn't dream of any of that shit.

osterleymama · 12/10/2012 21:54

Don't have a fag tonight. It's never just one . I quit for two years pre-DS and somehow ended up on a slippery slope of 'just one tonight, as I'm drinking...just a few when I'm drinking.as many as I want when drinking..ooh can't be the girl who never buys cigs and constantly bums them from friends..buy a pack when out..5 left the next day..just one when I'm hungover..and so on until I was back on 20 a day.

Quit again when pregnant with DS (now 2) and have finally accepted that I will never be able to have a cigarette again.

osterleymama · 12/10/2012 21:57

And agree with Sarah. Quitting is hard and horrible. It's worth another ounce of the willpower you already utilised to not have to go through that again.

I think you have been fag free for to long to start again now. Do what I do and have some wine. Rightly or wrongly I drank while I was bfeeding, and a couple of glasses of vino winds you right down in the evening. Hopefully I didn't poison my kids by breastfeeding them alcohol. Anyway cheers, hope you can relax and chill.
