to wonder when a pie sudddenly became a casserole with a lid?! ... where's the rest of the pastry?

Yes. I am bored.

But seriously I've had several pies in pubs recently and they have all just effectively been a pie filling with a lid of pastry.... where's the pastry round the sides and bottom ?

I just watched them making a pie on daybreak and..... they did the same thing !

I'm outraged.

When did this become acceptable?

I don't like it.

surely meat is more expensive than pastry? So why would pubs be doing it to cut costs?

LexiLoganberry · 12/10/2012 18:08

I must admit that I personally prefer mine with just the lids as I don't enjoy alot of pastry but completely agree that it is most definatly not a pie, they need another name.

We ate somewhere a while ago and my DH had a steak and ale pie, when it arrived I thought it was more of a steak and ale pudding as it was one of those suet pudding bowl type ones that's then turned out, can someone tell me if this is classed as a pie or a pudding? Just wondering.

YouMayLogOut · 12/10/2012 18:12

Sounds like a pudding to me Lexi.

Grin It's definitely autumn!!

Maisydaisy34 · 12/10/2012 18:21

I was horrified when I went to a pub a few month ago and they bright stew with a lid out....for the love of all things British and pastry we need to bring back the pie!!

TraineeBabyCatcher · 12/10/2012 18:21

We call it 'lazy pie'. Sometimes we will have lazy pie for tea if I'm feeling a little cba. But mostly it has to be a proper pie. Nom. Ooo pie. We haven't actually had it for a while, might have to make one tomorrow. With home made chips, and veg. Mmm drewls

Fairylea · 12/10/2012 18:27

Well I've done shepherds pie for dinner after all.. so not a proper pastry pie - going to do a proper one tomorrow after all this pie talk :)

I did cheat with the shepherds pie though... I used fresh ready made mash from Tesco... I'm very lazy today :)

(But not so lazy I'd only put a sodding lid on a pie tsssk).

I LOVE puff pastry but never shortcrust with savory, surely? isn't that just for sweet pies?

YouMayLogOut · 12/10/2012 19:15

Shortcrust meat pies with pastry all round are the best!

Puff pastry for a meat pie seems so flouncy, not suitable for a hearty pub meal or home-cooked dinner!

boaty · 12/10/2012 22:07

DH says puff pastry is no good...it has to be proper pastry.....
Do you lot realise he is going to expect a pie over the weekend now!!! Shock

mum2twoloudbabies · 13/10/2012 08:59

Who knew pies were so emotive and devisive Grin

QueenofNightmares you are so right about the HB chicken and leek best pie ever! Closely followed by their steak and ale with a puff pastry lid Shock

YouMayLogOut - you are exactly right. 15 or so years ago I worked in a chain Irish themed pub. All the food was either microwaved or deep fried. The "pies" were made by taking a portion of pie mix out of the freezer, tipping it into a round shallow dish and microwaving for 2 minutes. Then take a disc of puff pastry out of the freezer. Microwave. Put on top of dish containing the now hot pie mix. And serve.
