AIBU?

To think this is wrong on so many different levels?

This actress here 'Antonia Campbell-Hughes' is looking gaunt and nearly dead imo to play the role of Austrian kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch in the film 3096.

She's risking her life to play a leading role in a film and god knows what irreparable damage she may do to her body long term?

Now many brave people risk their lives in their jobs every day...Police, Army, Fire fighters to name but a few...but to do this to yourself to play a film role -why? Confused

Am I alone in thinking that as much as the victim Natascha Kampusch deserves to have her story told...expecting and encouraging anyone to do that to their body in order to play her role is just wrong?

On top of that, this quote actually made me feel sick..."Antonia was cast in the role in April, and in June she told the Evening Standard that she was really committed to playing Natascha. The one thing that I have been adamant about is that I am playing a character in a script,? she said. ?It?s not a biopic or a case study. But playing someone real, you feel you have to give a bit more. There was an understanding from the beginning that I would suffer as much as she did

Errr no you can never 'suffer' as much as Natascha Kampusch did because you're an actress. You were not kidnapped when you were ten years old, and starved and beaten by Wolfgang Priklopil, who kept you in the cellar of his house in Austria for 3096 days before you escaped Confused

And check out 50 cents too at the bottom of the link. He lost 4 stone in just 9 weeks to play a cancer victim...by living on a liquid diet.

Am I being unreasonable in thinking that as much as the characters in the films went through hell and should be portrayed as accurately as possible, no-one should be putting their life at risk to play the roles?

Agreed, Worra.

Saw the pics on Yahoo news today, made me feel ill so didn't look at article.
Also quite pissed off with decadence of an actress making herself so ill to play a part. Though of course weight manipulation is an old chestnut for 'dedicated' thesps, ennit.

The bit about 'suffering as much as Kampusch' though. What utter, utter bollocks.

That Matthew Mahogany is also looking horrendously gaunt & ill too at the moment. You have to wonder what damage they are doing to themselves.

And yes, what a damn silly thing for that actress to say Hmm. She sounds a bit precious, to be honest.

It's an odd one, actors have been making huge changes to their appearance for film roles for a while.

Whether it's dramatic weight loss - Christian Bale, weight gain -
Robert De Niro, or bulking up muscle - Tom Hardy

Tom Hanks has done it twice, hasn't he? Once for Philadelphia & later on for Castaway.

YANBU, but actors have been doing wacky things for their art for a long time. I do think it's mad, but if you look at them as artists (and I think many of them are) it's just what artists do.

The suffering as much as Natascha is totally Unreasonable. To say "I wanted to understand a little bit what she went through" is more reasonable, and more accurate. That's just pure unadulterated ego speaking right there, that the only suffering the actress went through was food deprivation.

Which most of us have tried in the form of diets!

Thinking about it, there are many jobs which can damage the health of workers (if not being life threatening). The difference with the examples above is that they are quite likely to have nutritionists etc working alongside them and they are likely to have a little more choice in whether they do it than most people.

This is an interview with Christian Bale -
The fact that you lost 63 pounds for this role suggests tremendous commitment. What drew you to it?

Well, I hadn't worked in a while - and I wanted to - but I just hadn't found scripts that I'd really been interested in. So I was really dying for something to arrive. Then when this one did, I just didn't want to put it down. I finished it and, upon the kind of revelation that you get at the end, I immediately wanted to go back and re-visit it, to take a look at what clues I could have gotten throughout. There are an awful lot, but they're really nicely done because they're very, very subtle. Sometimes you get a really great character and the movie ain't so great; this one seemed to me to be a really great character and a potentially great movie as well.

Why did you decide to starve yourself?

It just didn't enter my head that it could be done any other way, really. I just realised, "Okay, I have to lose weight." I just had no idea how much I would have to lose in order to get the look that I was searching for.

I had a photograph of Hank Williams when he was only 29, but he was looking like he was coming on 50, I guess just from abuse. It was a photograph of him getting released from jail just a few months before he died. He's shirtless and he looks a wreck, absolutely emaciated. So I stuck that on the front of the script to be kind of my image of what Trevor should be, and then just kept going and going and trying to reach that.

What kind of medical guidance were you getting?

I had been to a nutritionist and when I had got down to what she had told me was a healthy weight, I just went, "You know what? I can go more than this. I can keep going." So I lost another 20 pounds below what she said I should stop at...

So entirely his choice from the looks of it.

YANBU Shock

YANBU for the fact that she implied her losing weight out of choice was somehow comparable with what that poor little girl went through. YANBU for highlighting a photo of her wearing an outfit that not only shows how thin she is, but actually makes her look thinner.

YABU to suggest she shouldnt do it. Its her choice, as misguided as it is :(

She seriously have an eating disorder, this film role thing is a cover up. No around of money is worth that

Melpomene · 12/10/2012 07:21

Yup, obviously she's not suffering as much as the real victim did. Going on a drastic diet whilst still having the freedom to go out and see your friends and family, and knowing you'll be paid many thousands of pounds at the end of it, is not exactly the same as being kept prisoner, not knowing whether you'll ever see your friends and family again or even make it out alive.

She sounds extremely disturbed to think that acting in a film, even one which requires extreme weightloss could be anything like the suffering of being kidnapped and held hostage for years.

And yes, she looks like she has an eating disorder. And yes, I wonder what this will do to her long term health.

She wants to listen to Laurence Olivier (might not be true, but I want it to be so there) www.simplydustinhoffman.com/tryactingdearboy.

It's silly for her to say she will suffer as much as Natascha Kampusch, as to the weight loss, it's no more than what Christian Bale did to star in the Machinist and look at him now after starring in Batman.

TeaBrick · 12/10/2012 09:35

That kind of weight loss would increase her risk of osteoporosis, surely?
I think women should wear whatever they want, whatever their size, but it's so shocking to see her so thin wearing that dress that really emphasises her thinness. Still, it will get publicity for the film, and that's what matters most Hmm

I didn't realise this thread actually posted because as soon as I hit 'post' last night, the broadband went out.

But yes, I agree she would have lost the weight under the close eye of a nutritionist...however no-one knows what long term damage any of those actors have done.

And I hope she was misquoted when she said there was an understanding that she would suffers as much as Natascha Angry

Losing a lot of weight for a role - not exactly new.

Yes Trills, she wrote a book apparently saying that she was starved, beaten and raped Sad

I'm fine thanks.

I came to see what you thought was "wrong on so many levels" and stayed to talk about actors being ridiculous in their "oh yes I really know how they feel", don't really feel like reading about kidnap and rape and starvation this morning :)

Then again I always do this face Hmm at "method acting". You are an actor - just do some pretending.

You don't have to convince yourself that it's really happening to you or that you are really feeling the emotion, you just need to make your face and body look as if it is.

Report
purplehouse · 12/10/2012 10:15

She looks shocking

Think they should have got a naturally very skinny actress - plenty of these around and made her look half dead using makeup on face and skin. And put baggy clothes on her.

Report
WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 10:18

Exactly, a decent actor should be able to thoroughly research the subject and then....errr act I suppose.

I agree purple, a naturally thin actress with make-up and lighting would probably suffice.

I think the fact she chose to wear a very revealing dress which shows off her skeleton points to an eating disorder. If I looked like that I would cover it up. There is nothing attractive about illness. I hope she hasn't done herself irreversible damage.
