To think if your house is smokier than a victorian city its not 'clean'?

Not about a specific person just things and a 'type' of person I have come across.
I've come across a lot of people who are neat and tidy enough, and bang on about how spotless their houses are but I have to grit my teeth not to point out chain smoking in a house with children with all the windows shut, grotty ashtrays ahoy! is not 'clean' or 'hygienic' or healthy by any stretch of the imagination?.

AIBU?

I agree, it's definatley not clean, I grew up in a smokers house, both parents. We used to dry clothes by the fire in the living room where Mom and Dad smoked. The ceilings were brown, the wood work all creamy coloured. When it come to decorating, we had to sugar soap ceilings and all before we started. The light fittings were all coated with nicotine. YUK.

Needless to say, I do not smoke, never have done.

Yes, but I think many smokers don't smoke inside their own homes now. although I see a lot of people smoking in their cars.

When my uncle died we sold his house (he lived alone) and I have it on good authority that the new owners are still trying to get rid of the smell! His house was inherited from his parents, and my Nan was a chain smoker. Instead of actually thoroughly cleaning, they just wallpapered over when the layers became yellow. The new owners stripped about 5 or 6 layers of wallpaper from one room, all nicotine stained and stinking.

During the initial house clearance, I recovered a photo I loved, and took it home. I spent about an hour painstakingly cleaning the nicotine off the frame to restore it to its former glory.

I never remember being smoked around in that house when I was young, but it was very different smelling to other people's houses, and I spent a lot of time playing outside.

When my Nan came to live with us, she was still a heavy smoker with terrible asthma and was prone to frequent chest infections. She was only allowed to smoke in the outhouse, but my parents shielded me from this. I do remember the huge plastic vessel shaped like a blimp that she had to take her inhalers from, and her disgusting cough. Put me off smoking for life.

Said I'd never go out with a smoker ever, and was very disappointed when I found out DP smoked. I didn't get rid of him because you can't help who you love, but he knows I hate it and has never made an effort to change Sad.

Urgh. If you were only going to smoke in one room in the house why on earth would it be the kitchen? How filthy is that? I'd never eat there.

My mum smoked all over her house - in bed, whilst cooking, everywhere.

When we stayed she wouldn't smoke in front of my children but would go in another room, despite the fact that her mostly open-plan house had no doors and everywhere still smelled horrible. It was immaculate, but still stunk and all the soft furnishings, curtains etc had a smokey odour.

We stopped visiting/staying due to DD1 and DD3 having asthma, and DD2 was oxygen dependent for her first year of life. I'm going up in half term because she's now been quit for 4 months - I'm really proud of her.

Smokers are deluded - they might think they're clean and fresh but they're not and it's only when they quit they realise how bad they smell.

Also if that's what the inside of their house looks like then can you imagine what inside their lungs and organs looks like?

I know, needless to say really they visit me!
sidge i know what you mean about being proud.
My dad stopped smoking 6 years ago when he came and hugged me while i was on the computer and i said ''dad you stink'' it just slipped out but he has never smoked one since, two weeks after he stopped he was walking home from work kicked a packet and it was a full twenty pack of the type he smoked and he chucked them! Grin

I have never taken a puff ever, i felt like the only person at school.

I think that my mum's house stinks, because she smokes, but i've had the same said of mine, because i have a dog.

The only difference is that any washing done, doesn't smell of dog and i can air the living room out fully.

But in regards to smoking in the kitchen, most people's pets sleep in the kitchen, so i suppose it is what suits the person who owns the house.

My Son in law won't eat in mine if the dog has been in the house and i haven't fully cleaned afterwards (including mopping etc).

My ex smokes in his house, the kids always come back absolutely stinking.

He's trying to sell his house and I can't help but think that the fact this awful stale smoke smell hits you in the face as soon as the front door opens, isn't exactly making his house appealing to potential buyers.

I really don't think you can compare smoke smell to dog smell

My nan chain smokes and has a dog! Her house stinks and she has a smoking room (the dining room). Her windows arew always wide open and the back door and the french windows. It still stinks.

I like the smell of fresh tabacco (sp) but stale smoke is grim.

I am an ex smoker and I never realised how bad smoking smells till I gave up.You really do live in denial.

I think if your dog is clean and you wash dog bedding regularly on top of normal house work your house shouldn't smell, birds I would assume your nephew is an idiot LOL.

Our attic bedroom still smells of smoke. We have lived here for more than 8 years and have redecorated. Nobody has smoked in this house all that time. YANBU.

I have inlaws who smoke in their house and you see a thick film if smoke in the air when you walk in....that's after choking! They clearly can't see it and think if they smoke at an internal door then the smoke won't go into that room! Hmm

Who smokes in the house with kids any more? This is just not the done thing now. I don't know anyone who does.
