To ask you to tell this shop that having 'I love sluts' in their window is not ok?

Link here to my original thread: link

They are on Facebook here:

Amanda's of York Facebook page

There is a t-shirt in their window that has been there all week that says 'I love sluts' on it. I have been in twice to complain that it's offensive and been told I'm being obnoxious, it's just a t-shirt, people find it funny, it's a best seller, etc etc.

Maybe some people do find it funny; I don't. I think it's awful. It promotes woman-hating language and suggests it's ok to judge women on their sexual habits, call them names and treat them as worthless. I don't know any women or men who would find this funny, but apparently it's ok to offend everyone who walks past the shop in order to appeal to the few neanderthals out there who would laugh at it.

I know not everyone's a feminist, I know some people will think I'm having a sense of humour failure, and I know that in the grand scheme of things it's one small statement. But I feel like it stands for a lot more, and I am more incensed by it every day that I walk past it.

If it makes you angry too, please tell them. They also have a website, Amanda's of York, that has contact details if you would like to get in touch but don't have/want to Facebook.

Yup, Joyful. Not my greatest moment, but it's very much my problem....it doesn't affect DD.

Bubblemoon · 10/10/2012 11:51

Typo hell. Should have read

Why isn't everyone a feminist? Why would anyone not believe in equal legal, political and economic rights for women?

Steppemum, It is a mans tshirt though isn't it? Most men who buy that tshirt would not give too hoots or even know anything about slutwalks, they would just think its incredibly funny. I think I could "get it" if it was a womens t shirt, if that makes any sense.

WorraLiberty · 10/10/2012 11:54

Worra that's my one concern. I'm hoping the negative publicity will outweigh the good

Oh come on. There's no such thing as bad publicity when it comes to this sort of thing.

I imagine the fact there was so much 'outrage' from a group of Mums on Mumsnet, will make the t.shirt all the more attractive to a rebellious teenager.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood "Relax" anyone?

ScaryBOOAlot · 10/10/2012 11:55

Done. Idiots.

Kaloobear · 10/10/2012 11:58

Probably true Worra. But I'm sick of seeing it, and I can't think of a better way to protest.

No worries, Joyful. I didn't think you were critical of me. I was critical of me, though.

minouminou · 10/10/2012 11:59

If the store has to pull the t-shirts, then the publicity will be for naught.
I wonder if the manufacturer could be persuaded to do this.

Lovelygoldboots · 10/10/2012 12:01

Well in that case maybe we should all get tshirts with "I love Sluts" on them. We should reclaim it as a word for all women who enjoy having sex, just as the words, puff, queer, faggot have been reclaimed by gay men. Then it won't be an insult any more will it.

minouminou · 10/10/2012 12:02

Eleven Paris makes the t-shirts.

£45 a pop!

WorraLiberty · 10/10/2012 12:03

How will it be for naught?

I'd never heard of this shop or their facebook page until I spotted this thread.

If this complaint goes fairly viral and they end up increasing their takings, many many more stores might follow suit.

Just a thought.

BellaTata · 10/10/2012 12:05

Done it.

minouminou · 10/10/2012 12:06

I meant the publicity for the t-shirts.

geegee888 · 10/10/2012 13:09

YANBU. But then I objected to a planning application for a restaurant next to my flat to be called "Thai Me Up In [Name of City]". My objection failed.

TunipTheVegemal · 10/10/2012 13:23

I've just sent you a PM Kaloobear.

RoomForASmallOne · 10/10/2012 13:30

Done.
I despair sometimes.

Fakebook · 10/10/2012 13:31

They should stop being so fucking sexist and show a "I love gigolos" T shirt too in the shop window too!

Fakebook · 10/10/2012 13:32

Too many "toos" there. Oops.

StuntGirl · 10/10/2012 13:39

Even if the shop assistant disagrees with your opinion, to tell a customer they are obnoxious is, well, obnoxious. Terrible service to go with their terrible attitudes then!

Kaloobear · 10/10/2012 13:41

It's gone GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Thank you all!!

TunipTheVegemal · 10/10/2012 13:45

fantashtic · 10/10/2012 13:49

nice one Kaloobear, I was just about to take a detour on my lunchbreak and have a word!

RoomForASmallOne · 10/10/2012 13:58

Good work Kaloobear Smile

Kaloobear · 10/10/2012 14:13

It might have been window change day anyway, but I do feel rather proud of MN!
