Not to make a fuss for DD's first Christmas?

My DD will be around 6 weeks old for her "first Christmas". DH and I were just going to get on with it as normally as possible, with a minimum of fuss. I mentioned this the other to a friend, but she looked horrified that we wouldn't be buying DD presents etc. will I look back and feel guilty that we didn't do anything?

What age does this kind of thing matter for children?

Ds3 will be 7 months old this Christmas and we're getting him a couple of little bits to unwrap, purely for our benefit of having a nice picture of him opening presents. I know it's daft, but that's ok.

I don't think it's at all U to not make a big deal of Christmas for little babies. They won't remember it, and presents really aren't the be all and end all of Christmas anyway. It's a shame that people sometimes lose sight of that.

I must be horrible, DS2 will be 8m at christmas and I've got him one present Blush
Though a lot of DS1s presents are technically to share, he just isnt big enough for them yet :)

DD1 was 4.5mths for her first Christmas. I just got her some clothes she needed and wrapped them up. On Christmas day we stuck her in the bumbo with presents piled around her and took a picture as proof she had a good time Wink.

DD2 was 11mths and followed her just under two and a half year old sisters lead.

This year they will be 3 and nearly 2 and actually I am really looking forward to it Smile.

So when do you get them toys?

Christmas is as good an excuse as any.
Having said that, no need to go mad.

DD was a week old for her first Christmas (2010) she had arrived nearly a month early and due to complications (Strep B) and an EMCS, we only made it out of hospital at 3pm on 23rd Dec!

It was important to me to stop off and buy her a special outfit for the day and a few presents for under the tree.

DD2 will be just shy of a year at Christmas. I'm not going too mad but will be getting some things mostly because dd1 will think it odd if Father Christmas doesn't being her anything.

YANBU, no point buying a 6 week old a present! I reckon there's little point until they are at least 2 TBH.

Sastra · 09/10/2012 16:03

DH's (lighthearted) response was that we can wrap up her 600 quid pram Grin

Im having this exact same discussion with everyone now, ds will be 6 months at xmas and around that time i would of bought him a baby walker anyway so when a friend asked me before what he was getting i said a baby walker, cue her nearly choking on her sandwich cos i was subjecting my child to the most horrendous abuse by not getting him everything out the toys r us catalogue.

the way i see it is he doesnt know whats going on for this year and possible next year so why not scrimp while we can cos im sure in years to come ill be spending a fortune on presents.

mil on the other hand has already bought hi an electric car for this christmas and numerous other bits of tat that will probably fall apart. the car is for 3 years and upwards Hmm may i remind you he is currently 4 months old! but shes a whole other thread!!!!

I think you can make a big deal of Christmas without it meaning presents. My boys are 3 and are getting excited already - about the tree, the decorations and the possibility of seeing reindeer flying. They got a lot last year as it seemed time for a big turnaround in the things they were playing with. Those things are still enough so we will be adding very little this year.

And I've just re-read that they will be 7 weeks! So a couple of glittery baubles hung up close will probably do!
