To ask how many of you smoke?

It seems, having read previous threads that smoking was wrong.

I know smoking is bad for your health as does a majority of the other smokers.

I have a 1YO and I smoke outside a couple of times a day and all my family smoke.

I wonder how many other mums are not admitting to having a cheeky fag now and then.

Is it really wrong to do so or am I not seeing the point here?

I don't smoke ants-I am anti-smoking. I knew I shouldn't have typed anything. Sad

Shutupanddrive · 09/10/2012 14:07

No I don't smoke

teacher123 · 09/10/2012 14:07

I smoked for 10 years and gave up about 15 months ago. The amount I smoked varied from 20 a day when I was a student, to around 3 a day by the time I gave up. I look about 5 years younger than when I quit even though I have a 5.5 month old baby who is a 'variable' sleeper...!

We had next door neighbours who all smoked like chimneys in our last house and they had a little girl who died of cot death when she was 4 months old. I know that it's not conclusive, but smoking is a huge SIDS risk and having known someone who'd lost a baby, I couldn't live with myself if I'd smoked when DS was below 6 months. I still occasionally crave a cigarette but hope that I've quit for good. However the second they invent cigarettes that don't kill you, I'm going straight back to it. I loved smoking, even though it's smelly, expensive and antisocial!

Inneedofbrandy · 09/10/2012 14:15

I did dream a few years days ago of smoking. It was really realistic woke up craving, not going to start again though, no way.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 09/10/2012 14:15

How does everyone feel about e-cigs?
I was a smoker (20 a day) and gave it up for 5 years whilst I had the DCs. I am now a 'vaper' so no dangerous fumes / passive issues. Still hide away from the kids though.
I am torn about how I feel about it. I am definitely addicted to nicotine and crave it until I vape. I chill more and love the breaks that smoking enables you to have. However, I don't like being a slave to it. In all honesty I would have probably ended up back on the fags eventually if it wasn't for the ecig.
Makes me a bit lazy tho- vaping and mnetting instead of doing enriching actives with DCs or the housework. Grin

WithoutCaution · 09/10/2012 16:30

I don't smoke and never have nor has my DH. The only family members who do are my sister and her DP (they go outside). Sister claims that the only reason she started smoking was to gain/maintain friendships

I don't like seeing people smoking while pushing prams/pushchairs etc but that's just me being all judgey

Nagoo · 09/10/2012 16:37

I have been known to smoke on a night out in a pub garden, and when my DCs are being babysat at home.

I don't like my DC seeing people smoke. I don't want smoking to be normal for them. And I wouldn't let someone who smelled of cigarettes hold my little baby. I don't care if that makes me mean and unpopular.

Nagoo · 09/10/2012 16:39

Oh and when people smoke outside school I judge them for not being able to wait 5 minutes.

redadmiralsinthegarden · 09/10/2012 16:39

no. don't smoke.

MummifiedBonkeyMollocks · 09/10/2012 16:41

I occasionally smoke when I am stressed to the hilt and smoke socially.

Dh smokes but not in the house.

I don't like ds to be in a closed room with smokers. My sil is a inconsiderate bitch and just sparks up without asking! Angry

Providing you know the risks, blah blah blah, then your life you do what you like!
I do judge people for not giving a rats arse about whether their kids are breathing it or not!

MummifiedBonkeyMollocks · 09/10/2012 16:42

And I like it!

MaBaya · 09/10/2012 16:42

I hate myself for it, but yes, I do smoke.

I gave up when I found out I was pregnant with Dc1 eight years ago. Started 'social smoking' a couple of ciggies a month maybe when he was about 6 mths old, and kept that up until I fell pregnant with Dc2 5 yrs ago. Then stopped completely. Started 'social smoking' again when she was about a year old and that has crept back up to 10 a day, which was what I smoked ore-kids. I smoke during the day at work, mostly. Sky fags in the garden when the kids are in bed. On nights out.

I must give up properly. I hate being a smoker.

TalcAndTurnips · 09/10/2012 16:43

I want to hear more about Sparkling smoking ants.

It'll turn up on The Great British Menu - I tell thee. Grin

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 09/10/2012 16:45

Stopped smoking last October, wouldn't start again now that I'm going to be a Mum, it wouldn't be fair on my DD.

MummifiedBonkeyMollocks · 09/10/2012 16:46

Smoking ant

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2012 16:46

I totally accept that it's none of my business and everyone can do what they like, and if that's smoking then so be it. My very good friend smokes, i wish she wouldn't but she does. She likes smoking.

I also accept that giving up is not that easy.

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 09/10/2012 16:47

I do judge people for not giving a rats arse about whether their kids are breathing it or not!

You do know that the chemicals stay on your skin, even if you smoke outside, for at least an hour? And that even if you don't smoke around children, these chemicals can trigger asthma, glue ear and other nasty illnesses? You may not blow smoke in their faces but you're still not doing them any good.

MummifiedBonkeyMollocks · 09/10/2012 16:50

Freaky I know all that, however the same can be said about all sorts of fumes, not just cig smoke.

Breathing in direct smoke is just not nice. I always ask anyone I am around if they would mind me smoking, if they do, then I don't. I would never smoke around children.

5madthings · 09/10/2012 16:52

I smoke, about five a day, roll ups. I stopped for over nine years when pteg and bfeeding but had pnp after no 4 and ended up in a psych unit where everyone smoked. I pretty much stoopwd again when preg with no 5 but had the odd one after discussing ut with my midwife, cpn and consultant having the odd one in pregnancy tho not what i wanted to do enabled me to keep a check on my mental health. I stopped when dd was born and bfeeding and stated again once not bfeeding.

I go.outside and dont smoke around the children and have a 'smoking coat' that i then take off. It gives me a break and that fag and cup of tea i have once the kuds are all in bed is my.most chilled part if the day!

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2012 16:53

Thanks Bonkey they do exist. Grin Talc I don't-that would be very cruel to ants. Sad

sheepsgomeeping · 09/10/2012 16:53

I do smoke, 2-3 a day, always outside though and never in the house. I come from a family of smokers who all died from smoking related illnesses and all were 20 plus a day smokers.

I'd never judge anyone for being a smoker but I would judge a smoker for smoking inside a house where there are babies and children. Unfortunately i have friends that are ignorant enough to do this and think its perfectly ok to have 8 people smoking away in a house where there is a newborn and several young children in the same place. It really makes my blood boil Angry

NellyBluth · 09/10/2012 16:55

I smoke. A couple a day when I am at home with the baby, during long naps and after she has gone to bed. Now I'm back at work I'm smoking more. I don't smoke during the day when I'm going out to baby groups or meeting other mums.

Interestingly they all know that I smoke and none of them have ever had a problem. I guess maybe as i don't smoke during the day when I will be seeing other babies I don't smell of smoke. I would be fine if anyone said they didn't want me holding their baby, that's their choice, its one of the reasons why I am honest.

Ironically, I look quite a few years younger than I am and still have no wrinkles and unblemished skin. I don't sound like Mariella Frostrup either. I fully expect this all to turn around and smack me on the arse when I hit 40 and wake up one morning looking 62.

MummifiedBonkeyMollocks · 09/10/2012 16:55

sheeps I know people like this.
I can't even stand to be in a room full of smokers. I need some air (yes I know!)
Poor kids! :(

Helpyourself · 09/10/2012 16:58

I know smoking shortens your life, but I remember a comedian (can't remember who) saying "it's the shit years at the end, the ones you don't really want".
If that were true, I'd puff away happily. It's the thought of having an imobililsing stroke in my 60s or terminal cancer in my 50s that haunts me.

sheepsgomeeping · 09/10/2012 16:59

I think having a quiet fag outside in the fresh air is vastly different to people blowing fag smoke in a childs face in a room where the air is fetid with smoke

Also i don't suppose traffic fumes, air fresheners and all the million and one chemicals and food additives are doing us much good either

I smoke, I choose to minimise the risk to my child [shrug]

Theres nothing more sanctimonious than an ex smoker....

My mother was an ex smoker and lambasted everyone with did you know fag smoke is etc etc. Now she she has started again she doesnt care where or who she smokes next to or whether she smokes in the house or not. Now thats a hypocrite.
