To think working 6hrs without a break is a little excessive ?

I know that by law you can work 6hrs continuously before your employer is obliged to give you a break, but don't you think this is a bit much ? Have just started a new temporary p/t retail job and working 6hr shifts. I was surprised at this as I'm sure when I worked as a student (15yrs ago right enough...) you got a break after 4hrs ?

its disgraceful having to stand up at a till for 6 hours not under any circumstances allowed to drink in front of the customers no meal breaks allowed so working non stop from 11 til 6pm , no one available to take me off til so i can pee. thanks toys are us ! The government needs to step in on this employers such as these are treating their staff like dogs and shouldnt be able to get away with it .

i dont think people care about paid breaks they just want a break and to be treated with respect not as a slave

My working hours are tracked by my tachograph, so I have no choice. However, since a lot of my time is spent waiting, drinks and the toilet aren't a problem. I've occasionally gone eight hours in real time before a recorded break. Two hour wait at start, four hour drive, two hour unload, then off to the caff.

I work for Tesco and the breaks are decent. 4hrs or less - no breaks, 5hr shift a 15 min break, 6hr shift half hour break, 7hr shift a quarter and a half, 8hr two halves and 9hr plus three half's. Unpaid thpigh
Plus with core shifts - Friday and Saturday, 9hrs - although it's the same hours as its a core shift not overtime there's less breaks - so two halves and a quarter. Doesn't really make a difference so is silly. Eg yesterday i did a 9hr and got 3 halves - today the same shift will be two halves and a quarter. They are good and generous with breaks on the whole though

6 hours is too long on your feet without a drink or a snack -it is terrible to treat employees like this. it was 4 hours when i worked in retail years and years ago and that was bad enough but not as bad as 6 hours without a break -

Its is a bit oants

I am working a six hour shift today, it was supposed to be 6.5 as i am supposed to have an unpaid half hour break but I honestly dont see the point in that

I am not usually by myself so can pop to the loo if needed, if its quiet they dont mind you having a snack or drink as long as you have a sip and back on the floor

I think when you work with the public 6 hours is a long time. Dealing with people is mentally hard work. I work in the NHS and find lack of breaks very hard.

⬆ Sorry just seen this is Zombie.

It’s terrible that so many NHS staff have just got used to such long shifts without a break. It’s not ideal for their own wellbeing let alone patient care.

In my office job I have total autonomy so while I might put in long hours, i have complete freedom to manage my day. I’d really struggle without being able to nip to the loo or grab a coffee and I do just take that for granted. But, when I worked in retail we did used to cover for each other to go to the loo or nip out the back for a drink. It just feels a bit dehumanising if people aren’t allowed the basic autonomy to go to the toilet if they need to. The stories of managers keeping tabs on toilet breaks sounds horrid. What would process managers to want to keep tabs on how long staff spent in the toilet? I just can’t understand it!
