for parking in a disabled bay (I have a blue badge)?

Because I've just been to get some bread and milk and have received a right bollocking for doing so :(

There are 2 disabled bays, one had a vehicle (people carrier type) in it, so I parked in the free one. Hauled myself out of the car, got my walker out of the boot and assembled it and then saw a sticker on the side window saying 'disabled vehicle please leave 8ft free for access purposes'. I wasn't sure what to do. There wasn't 8ft between the vehicles probably more like 5 or 6, but I needed to park too and the only other choice would have been the empty part of the carpark which is too far for me to walk. So I went to get my shopping, figured I'd be fairly quick anyway.

When I got back to my car there was a man sitting in the other vehicle. He got out when he saw me, pointed to notice and asked me if I could read and then had a go at me for ignoring it and as a disabled person I should know better and be more considerate of the needs of others. He made me feel like shit :(

Was I being unreasonable and is he allowed to claim 2 spaces like this?

He was rude.

Hard though, if you need the access then how else is he supposed to park? Maybe further away would be too far for him? Sounds like a case of shit timing that 2 of you who needed the spaces were there at once.

Can I ask though, some people have mentioned parking on road or in normal spaces to be able to have the access. How may of you non blue badge drivers actually look for stickers in cars? If you pull up behind a car on the road and park do you actively look for a sticker to make sure they don't need access from the back? Or an empty space in a carpark would you check the car next to you didn't need side access?

I'm just wondering how many people I have seriousl pissed off because while of course if I saw a sticker I'd leave space but I don't routinely check for them when I park.

OP, YANBU. I am fed up of hearing about the evil looks my best mate gets from old people just because she has a blue badge & happens to be young.

Sorry to hear that you had to get shit like that from a shitty man; makes me Angry I hope you are ok & try to forget about him & his attitude; he sounds like a total wanker waste of space to me.
& sorry for swearing but it makes me so cross for you.

Way2Go · 08/10/2012 17:34

YANBU for parking there.

YA definitely NBU for buying a cream cake.

Forget about the man, he was out of order.

Dawndonna · 08/10/2012 17:35

The man shouldn't have had a go at you, it was unfair. I can see he was distressed, but all the same, a bit of give and take is often necessary in these circumstances.

indith As the driver of a vehicle with a rear access ramp with a sticker, I am surprised at the number of people who leave space behind my car rarely enough space, but nevertheless enough to show they have thought about it but it is usually when I don't have DD & her wheelchair with me!!! I would not park anywhere when DD is with me where I run the risk of being blocked out of the car.

YANBU. I know someone who parked in a disabled bay who got bollocked by a passer by for unloading shopping into their boot when they "clearly weren't disabled." Friend said "I'm aware of that thanks, my mum is still in the cafe because I can't wheel her and the trolley out at the same time!" If it was me I'd have lost my cool because some people are so ignorant. In the case of this vehicle, like someone said, I thought the longer space behind was only for unloading wheelchairs etc. He should have parked somewhere where he couldn't block his own access (in the case of another disabled bay user legitimately parking in the space behind!), and also not have been so bloody rude.

you ok this morning?

he was being unreasonable. where else were you supposed to park?

JeezyOrangePips · 09/10/2012 07:46

When I park in a car space, I don't 'read' the cars beside me.

YANBU.
