to want to make my DCs flapjacks, but don't want to rot their precious teeth.....

....with all that sugar and syrup. Anyone got a delicious recipe that's not too heavy on the sugary stuff? I've tried a few 'healthy' recipes but they're so heavy on the oats that my DCs won't eat them.

Am IBU to want delicious goodness without the enormous sugar hit? Hmm My DCs do a lot of sporty stuff and flapjacks would be ideal for them to take with them, but I don't want to just spend hours of my precious time just to give them tooth rotting rubbish.

You wont rot your teeth if you clean them properly.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 07:42

Use honey?

ripsishere · 08/10/2012 07:43

FFS, a bit of sugar and golden syrup won't kill them. Like Robyn said, clean your teeth after.

AmberLeaf · 08/10/2012 07:46

Honey will still rot your teeth!

AmberLeaf · 08/10/2012 07:46

But yeah I agree its not a problem as long as they clean their teeth properly.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 07:48

Sure, but it's a less refined sugar I think. Plus, as everyone has said, if she gets the toothbrush out there should be no teeth rotting issues.
:)
I'd use sugar and syrup and then colgate myself and not stress about such things.

Sorry, that was a bit harsh. A bit of sugar is a good thing. And, IME honey just doesn't do it.

Iggly · 08/10/2012 07:49

It's delicious because of the sugar Grin

So YABU

Who else fancies a flapjack now Grin

SoupDragon · 08/10/2012 07:51

The whole point of flapjacks is the gooeyness given by the syrup.

Yes, you can make them with honey.

My personal recipe has 75g of syrup and half a can of (sweetened) condensed milk and no other sugar. Not sure how that stands up on your scale of worthiness.

Funnylittleturkishdelight · 08/10/2012 07:51

Oh I know I know!

Make granola bars and use evaporated milk or apple purée to bind it together. If you google there are lots of recipes. Delish!

ThreeWheelsGood · 08/10/2012 07:52

Just give them smaller portions!

SoupDragon · 08/10/2012 07:53

One hour to make & cook? Rubbish - 10 minutes to make, 15 mins to cook. [speedy]

jamdonut · 08/10/2012 07:54

But it won't be rubbish will it, it'll be homemade? Much better for them. You'd actually deny this because you're worried about their teeth? It's not like you will be giving it to them all the time, just as a snack after sports, and as others have pointed out, as long as they are good at brushing their teeth properly morning and evening, it really shouldn't make a bit of difference.

BikeRunSki · 08/10/2012 07:57

But it is the syrup, sugar and butter that hold it together. I have tried apple puree, but the result is v dry and crumbly.

Flapjacks that well know source of "delicious goodness" and childhood dental problems Hmm

ohmeohmy · 08/10/2012 08:19

Make cheesy ones

AKissIsNotAContract · 08/10/2012 08:23

Flapjacks don't enhance sporting achievement, just take bananas.

GoSakuramachi · 08/10/2012 08:28

If thats a really odd way to get a recipe request into aibu, why not just go to the.....recipe section? Or the food section?

4oz butter, 4oz brown sugar, 3tbsp syrup (or honey, or a mix) melted with 8oz oats and 2tbsp of milk to stop it going rock hard. Bake at Gas mark 4 for 20 mins.

You can cut this into 16 pieces (20cm x 20cm) tin, which isn't too big a piece and just ensure you clean teeth properly.

Apologies for the mix of imperial and metric, but this misch-masch just sums up my life.

sommewhereelse · 08/10/2012 09:50

Flapjack are really quick to make and cook (and I'm usually a slow baker)
The problem is waiting for them to be cool enough to cut into pieces. That takes far too long!
