To be disgusted about the idea of an Anne Summer's baby shower?

I've just received an email inviting me to an old friend's baby shower. She wants it to be Anne Summers themed.

I am sickened by this tbh. I've never been to a baby shower before, but i just assumed it would be baby-related and presents should be blankets, bottles, baby clothes etc - not lube and vibrators.

I'm a bit of a prude anyway, so would decline even if this was a normal party. But I can see five people have already agreed to go. AIBU to think this is totally inappropriate?

I wouldn't attend anything with Anne Summers in the title/invite. Tasteless.
Baby showers are supposed to be about the baby. I can just see those pics in the baby book. Eww.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 07:37

Not my taste but it's not doing any harm.

"Disgusted" is a bit much really.

Perhaps she's not been getting a lot since getting preggers and hopes her pals will chip in for the 18 inch fist of fury to restore the balance? Grin

Funnylittleturkishdelight · 08/10/2012 07:54

Yanbu sounds weird.

pumpkinsweetie · 08/10/2012 08:00

Each to their own i suppose.
Maybe she's having the Ann Summers instead of a baby shower.
Maybe she wants to enjoy the time she has left before the baby is born as there won't be much sex when he or she is born.

Not something i would like but hay ho, i don't think theres nothing weird in it.
I'm organizing a little shower/get together thing for my pregnant friend but i don't think it will be of the Ann Summers varietyGrin

Madmum24 · 08/10/2012 08:08

Nothing weird in it? Can you imagine the now unborn baby in five years time going through his/her baby album in asking what the "candles" are in the pics?

OP YANBU, if your friend wants an AS party she should not use her baby as an excuse for people to buy her sex stuff.

DigestivesWithPhiladelphia · 08/10/2012 08:09

Yuck. YANBU. Although I stay away from Ann Summers parties anyway - after a horrible incident where a male stripper wanted me to run baby oil on him and he struggled to take no for an answer Angry

DigestivesWithPhiladelphia · 08/10/2012 08:10

Rub, not run.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 08:10

I think perhaps in this case the OPs friend may not show the child the baby shower pics...........

Moominsarescary · 08/10/2012 08:11

An all you can eat chinese baby shower sounds great!

I've never had a baby shower before, I might hint at one of those.

An summers, meh each to their own. If your too shy just say you can't go

Proudnscary · 08/10/2012 08:14
Hmm

^But assuming there is a possibility this is for reals...the new baby shower trend is indulgent twaddle anyway.

Madmum24 · 08/10/2012 08:19

Yes, in honesty I would hope that the pics don't make there way in to the album, but surely that's the point, that a baby shower is a BABY shower; it's about welcoming the baby into the world not orgasms?

OP are you expected to buy "gifts" for the mum to be in lieu of a baby present after it is born?

fatlazymummy · 08/10/2012 08:56

I thought a baby shower was supposed to be a] thrown by the family/freinds of the Mum to be and b] to be baby/pregnancy themed.
Personally I wouldn't go to this. I would never go to an Anne Summers party anyway and I don't get the connection.
I don't think I'd be 'sickened' by it though.

TM08 · 08/10/2012 09:13

Yes, it's definitely a baby shower, not just a random Anne Summer's party. Her email was along the lines of: "Hey guys, was thinking of holding a baby shower type thing for this little baby. And i want it to be Anne Summer's themed. What do you think? Let me know by Friday so I can book something. Can't wait!"

I think it's horrible! Kinky sex should not be discussed at a baby shower imo. Unless she probably doesn't understand what a baby shower is actually about? She might think it's like a hen night type thing, as in her last night of freedom before she gives birth.

Ann Summers is NOT kinky. I've seen kinkier stuff for sale in the wincyette nightie section of M&S.

DoMeDon · 08/10/2012 09:18

I think she means she wants a party. You could email back saying -if it's a baby shower I doubt your little baby wants a naughty nightie or feather fancy tickle stick Grin

DoMeDon · 08/10/2012 09:24

Agree that it's not kinky though. It's just crappy underwear mainly, plus a few lubes, books and toys.

Tweasels · 08/10/2012 09:31

Don't get it me. Baby showers ugh, Ann Summers parties ugh. Combining the two is just weird.

I'd rather have a Tupperware party Grin

SeveredEdMcDunnough · 08/10/2012 09:36

Run fast. I wouldn't go NEAR anything to do with this brand, anyway.

The whole idea sounds tasteless and hideous. Baby related or not.

Just bloody odd tbh.

SeveredEdMcDunnough · 08/10/2012 09:37

Yes baby showers = hideous too, but not AS hideous as the other thing.

Combination of both = hell on earth imo.
