To people like the guy who has been arrested for April's murder are not much better than the people who commit these crimes? I've seem some truely horrific and brutal comments on Facebook about what they would like to do to him... Verging on the stuff of horror films... Why do they think it's acceptable in retaliation for an equally brutal crime? Even as a parent I would never want to behave in a way that resembled the person who committed the crime. Does that make sense?

Don't get me wrong, can't imagine what the family are going though and if it's your child... You might well have these dark thoughts but strangers?

YANBU. I don't think anything ever merits even state sanctioned physical punishment, let alone the sickening lynch mob mentality that can appear after tragic cases like this.

There's always a certain quarter of people who start shouting 'bring back the death penalty' whenever a terrible crime such as this hits the headlines. Most of these people would have the suspect hung, drawn and quartered before they'd even been proven to have commited the crime.

I completely understand those sentiments coming from victims their families but it makes me uncomforftable when others jump on the bandwagon.

For me, its also the assumption that the bereaved family would want the perpetrator hung, drawn and quartered that unsettles me. I had a conversation once with some friends who drunkenly shared some opinions I'd rather have not known about their attitude towards people who commit these terrible crimes. They were insistent that if someone hideously murdered my DP, I would want that person killed. They refused to believe that nothing, nothing would shake my belief that state sanctioned murder is still murder. So if I was ever in that situation, I know how much more it would upset me to hear strangers espousing such despicable points of view and assuming that I shared them.
