I have made a lovely beef stew, contains a decent amount of red wine. It cooked for 4 hours in the oven. AIBU to let 2 year old DD have some or will it send her 3 sheets to the wind?

As a baby my dd preferred alcohol soaked meat. Beef in Guiness, lamb in red wine. My HV objected and put it in her notes. Hmm

Mummyof2Girlies · 06/10/2012 13:10

I personally wouldn't let her as i wouldnt be sure what effect it would have on her :) But up to you xx

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 06/10/2012 13:11

The alcohol will have evaporated off, will it not?

motherinferior · 06/10/2012 13:11

The alcohol will have burned off.

HarlettOScara · 06/10/2012 13:11

All the alcohol will burn off in the cooking process so I can't see that it would do her any harm.

sugarice · 06/10/2012 13:11

Same as what Old Lady said.

JennyPiccolo · 06/10/2012 13:11

The alcohol will have evaporated. It's fine.

honeytea · 06/10/2012 13:11

The alcohol will be long gone.

BookieMonster · 06/10/2012 13:12

All the alcohol in the wine has been cooked off. There is no alcoholic content in your stew. Feed it to her! Sounds yum BTW.

wearingpurple · 06/10/2012 13:12

After 4 hours it would surely have evaporated, I'd think.

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 06/10/2012 13:12

I read somewhere (v scientific me) that alcohol remains unless you cook something for so long that it's basically indelible. So I wouldn't. We probably need an expert.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 06/10/2012 13:13

Alcohol boils at under 80 degrees celcius. Assuming the casserole was cooked at at least 100, there's no booze left.

squeakytoy · 06/10/2012 13:14

The alcohol will have cooked off.. of course it is safe to let her eat it!!

pleasethanks · 06/10/2012 13:15

Cooked at 160! Fingers crossed.

No if the alcohol boils it doesn't all evaporate. Why add it otherwise?

You could give her some watered down...?

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 06/10/2012 13:16

4 hours is more than enough time for the alcohol to have evaporated, at the very least only a trace amount of alcohol will remain.

pollyontheshore · 06/10/2012 13:16

Agree with Ophelia - some myth-busting thing I saw - a lot less alcohol evaporates than you'd think. (But I'm not an expert - sorry Orphelia).

Catsmamma · 06/10/2012 13:17

it'll be absolutely fine.

Mine were all always given what we were eating.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 06/10/2012 13:17

For the flavour.

LonelyCloud · 06/10/2012 13:18

The alcohol will have boiled off, so no way she can get drunk.

Having said that, I don't give DS (13 months) stew that's got alcohol in it, but that's only because I don't want him to get used to the taste of it.

McHappyPants2012 · 06/10/2012 13:19

The alchol will burn off just leaving the taste so will be fine to give it to a 2 year old.

Ps can I come for tea :)

pollyontheshore · 06/10/2012 13:19

Ok, after quick google, 4 hours should be plenty of time! 30 mins not so much. I'd go for it.

SamSmalaidh · 06/10/2012 13:22

4 hours should have got rid of most of the alcohol I think - according to wikipedia 95% of the alcohol is gone after 2.5 hours of simmering.

Narked · 06/10/2012 13:22

It doesn't cook off as much as you's think. In the future try reducing the wine on a high heat in a wide based pan before adding it to the stew - you still get the flavour but get rid of more of the alcohol.

Narked · 06/10/2012 13:22

you'd
