Would you have rewashed this?

Somewhat light-hearted straw poll...

I've been sorting through the kids clothes and had a pile ready to box up that will fit ds2 shortly so need to be kept handy. They were on the bed, half folded and away but the job was interrupted because hey, that happens with 2 toddlers. And then, I forgot the job was half done, because hey, that happens with 2 toddlers. So when it got to our bedtime DH had to move the box out of the way. In the process of doing so, he knocked a really thick, padded cardigan off the pile onto his dirty pants which, as he thinks is normal behaviour, he had dumped on the floor. He didn't notice this and when I did (in the morning), I put the cardigan in the wash. (Note well here - the laundry bin is 3 feet from where these pants were stashed on the floor.) Ok, I was very cross a bit irritated as I did so - it is one of those things that take forever to dry and goodness knows, I have enough laundry to keep on top of.

DH thought it was madness to rewash it. But it was right on top of his INSIDE OUT worn boxers. I felt a bit sick even thinking of then folding it up with all the rest of the clean clothes and storing it, and I am really not a fussy person usually. He blames pregnancy hormones for me finding it so grim. Our reactions were so different that I'm after some other opinions - would you have rewashed or turned a blind eye?

Probably not unless it fell onto a trench of skiddy poo. Not that my fragrant DH would do that. My DD, possibly would.

LondonKitty · 05/10/2012 04:48

You may be insane Gentleness, but if so, you are in excellent company.

Wink

I would have probably re-washed. Chucking one extra cardy in the washing machine is not that much extra work. Better than wondering whether those nasty bum germs are taking over your attic.... 3 or 4 months could be stone age to industrial revolution in bum germ years....

I probably wouldn't have rewashed it if it was in current use; I'd have aired it on the line though. But as it was to be put away, then yes, I would have rewashed.

And DH would be climbing a mountain of unwashed boxers to reach the bed, until the penny dropped and he put them in the basket.

MammaTJisWearingGold · 05/10/2012 05:24

I am a total slattern and I would have rewashed it.

kefybaby · 05/10/2012 07:13

I know a lot of people have given very sensible reasons as to why they would not rewash, but I confess that I would have also rewashed....!

picnicbasketcase · 05/10/2012 07:17

If he has no sense of hygiene, a wiping problem and only changes pants once a week then yes. Otherwise, no. Also agree with Pippa - I would wash it all when it came out of storage anyway.

YouMayLogOut · 05/10/2012 09:41

I'd have re-washed it.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 05/10/2012 09:48

Ugh. I would have rewashed, and I fucking HATE laundry. I have 30-ish loads a week to do if you include towels and bedding. I spend around 70% of my time on proxy laundry.

But a clean jumper on inside out, dirty skiddy pants? Rewashed for sure.

But then I'm a bit weird with laundry. Even my friends know that!

If things DS1 has grown out of have been folded in the bottom of the wardrobe, I still rewash them before putting them on DS2.

Know I'm odd with clothes washing.

But dirty pants would DEFINITELY require a rewash in my book.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 05/10/2012 09:49

Proxy should read poxy. Damn Autocorrect.

notsofrownieface · 05/10/2012 09:53

Unless said boxers had wet streaky bum stains, and said wet streaky bum stain had left a skid mark, no I would not have re washed.

But each to their own.

tzella · 05/10/2012 09:54

Can someone lead this conversation on to bum towels? I've got a story I'm dying to tell but there's never a right time Sad

BobblyOrangeGoldGussets · 05/10/2012 09:57

I think it is strange to not wash the stuff immediately before use for a new baby.

Aren't you going to wash everything after four months in storage OP? I wouldn't like to put a newborn in musty stored clothes without freshening them up.

I suggest you try this and then you won't need to wash the faecal contact cardi now.

I think it's unreasonable to spend so much time worrying about it. It's done. It's washed. Move on.

TheBigJessie · 05/10/2012 10:01

"Skiddy"?

What adult human being ( without additional needs or diarrhoea or gastroenteritis, etc) has "skiddy underwear" when they change them at the end of the day?

therewearethen · 05/10/2012 10:30

This thread has cheered my friday morning up lol at adult skiddy marks!

I would have rewashed it,same as I rewash towels regularly in case someone has dried their bum on it. :o

Is that okay? :o

cantspel · 05/10/2012 10:34

There are some very strange people about if you think that some how a cardi is going to be contaminated by contact with a pair of worn pants.
Dont your children sit on your bed, sofa or any other item that could have come in contact with your husbands bum?
Do you dip your children in dettol after they have come into your bed for a morning cuddle for fear that some how a bum germ has touched their young flesh?

Thingiebob · 05/10/2012 10:46

I want to hear about bum towels please.

PiedWagtail · 05/10/2012 12:07

lol! Think you may be overthinking this, OP! :)

purplehouse · 05/10/2012 12:13

Seeing as you are going to pack the clothes away for a bit, I would have rewashed. However, if this happened to an item that dc was going to wear the following day, I would not have rewashed. Because there are bum germs and then there are rotting bum germs!

purplehouse · 05/10/2012 12:14

Tell us about the bum towels!!!!

2rebecca · 05/10/2012 12:16

No, unless it was either visibly grubby or smelly.

SusanneLinder · 05/10/2012 12:19

Demands to hear about bum towels taps fingers

Goldenbear · 05/10/2012 12:24

Yes I would but my DP would've said the same as your DH. Plus, if you're putting clothes with natural fibres away to store they have to be clean as the moths are attracted to the dirt. My MIL gave me some lovely Norwegian hand knitted jumpers for DS that did belong to DP. They came with some dungarees also very cute. I opened them up and there were moth holes all over the jumpers. They had been stored with the dungarees which hadn't been washed as there was a dirty hanky in the pocket. I think this is what moths are attracted to.
