I am on leave this week and so far i have had at least 4 phone calls a day from these companies!
Where the heck do they get my number from?
I dont give it out, i dont have any connection with them, why are they bugging me?

I now just put the phone down when they drone on and tell me who they are and ask how i am today....unreasonable, but i want them to leave me alone.

Thinking of getting home phone disconnected.

How can i stop these calls?

I get these ALL THE TIME. I am also on the TPS list.

I did have one satisfying call though -- someone was calling about the compensation I may be due from my (nonexistent) accident and claimed to be calling from a "law firm." I said, "Are you telling me that the Law Society of England and Wales allows law firms to cold-call accident victims to solicit business?" He hung up on me!

(I don't know whether the Law Society allows this, but I am admitted in another jurisdiction where it would most definitely not be allowed, and it seemed like a good angle.)

When I was a student (in the States) I used to get calls all the time. In the run up to the 2004 Presidential election I started trying to convince cold callers to vote for John Kerry. They didn't like it, and I doubt I had any effect, but it was still satisfying.

Why, thank you, Bubblemoon/ Booblemun :) Although if you follow my method to the letter, receivers of the calls would also be on their arses, on account of all the G&Ts consumed.

It's a method I adapted from a very annoying man who used to stand by Oxford Circus tube station with a megaphone, shouting, "Are you a sinner, or a winner??" He was exceptionally efficient at scaring people off the product he was selling Grin

Just had a PPI call and DH responded at all times in some weird form of Mandarin (I think he only knows about 6 words and kept repeating). they hung up Grin

This happens to me all the time, have vomited over the phone due to chemo and just sat there crying.Cannot just leave phone to ring, as relatives phone from far away public phones.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/10/2012 22:26

And you can't always ignore it or leave it to go to answerphone as I found out tonight when an unknown number appeared on my phone as it rang. Luckily I was in the mood to have a good go at some cold-caller but it was actually an automated call from my bank checking that some recent transactions on my account were genuine and not fraudulent.

AberdeenAnxious · 04/10/2012 23:07

I just wonder how much business the companies get from these calls? I don't know anyone who actually gives them the time of day. I fear it's mainly vulnerable people who will fall foul of them.

I hate the ones who ask how you are like they know you. 'Hello Mrs Anxious, are you having a good day so far?' Yes, I was Hmm

We get loads in the day but we've also had them in the evening, as late as 9pm sometimes. I hate those because our phone very rarely rings in the evening and it always fills me with a sense of dread that it will be some bad news. Dh is very rude to them when he answers.

I rest my case.
They are fucking annoying, and i do not feel as guilty putting the phone down on them now.
Thanks all xxx

Don't get mad - get even.

First of all do register for TPS then deal with the others as follows.

If anyone calls about loft insulation, window replacement, solar panels just tell them you are either a) a tenant or b) you live in a listed building therefore there is no point in ever calling again. These firms often pass phone lists around so if you answer one or even seem mildly interested you get a lot more calls.

If they persist what you do is string them along for about half 15 minutes - then just suddenly say 'sorry got to go!' an dput teh phone down. Either that or just very gently put the phone on a cushion and walk away, go shopping, lay out in the garden, make a cup of coffee.. It really annoys them and they take you off the list.

I even have a little game I play with the ones who pretend to be from some such computer firm telling me I have a virus. I ask all sorts of really complicated questions that they don't have a clue about as they are just sales scammers. They eventually give up.
