To think that I'm not just getting old?

BrittaPerry · 03/10/2012 11:49

My hips and pelvis ache, with the odd stabbing pain when I accidentally do a movement that I shouldn't - i spend a week limping every month. My finger joints get so stiff when cold that I keep dropping things/not being able to pick things up properly. I am so tired sometimes that I stagger.

I have booked a gp appointment, but DH keeps saying that everyone over 25 feels like this, and I should just get used to it. He reckons that i should just power through, and laughs when I take painkillers.

I'm only 27! Surely I don't have a life of this waiting?

Are you getting enough exercise?

deste · 03/10/2012 11:50

No that's not the case. At 27 you are still very young.

WinkyWinkola · 03/10/2012 11:50

Nope. It's not old age. Obviously people are different but I'd be having a thorough check up if I were you.

BertieBotts · 03/10/2012 11:51

Um no that doesn't sound normal at all! Is he one of those blokes who won't seek medical attention unless limbs are literally hanging off? Grin

Hope you find out what's causing it though, that sounds nasty :(

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 03/10/2012 11:51

Sorry. Doesn't sound normal "getting old" to me.

BrittaPerry · 03/10/2012 11:56

Worra - I was - I do the school run uphill with a bike trailer containing a nearly three year old and a five and a half year old, for just over a mike each way, and my job involves walking or cycling, often carrying 10kg (i had to weigh it for postage) for about 3-5 miles a week. Plus wii fit about three times a week.

I've had to stop that, and start using the bus and leaning on the pram, because I am too tired and achy.

My other job is selling beer to football fans, so my fingers get covered in cold beer while I stand in a old stadium.

I should mention, the pelvis thing s most probably the spd back from the three year old.

I'm not pregnant - my last period was like a horror film.

I'm 44 and I don't get the kind of joint problems you describe.

Erm, where did your DH study medicine?

catstail · 03/10/2012 11:59

if you had said you were 40+ I would have said yes, its your age. I know plenty of 40+ who eel like you and plenty who dont

DameFanny · 03/10/2012 12:00

Could be an under active thyroid. Have your periods been getting heavier?

BrittaPerry · 03/10/2012 12:01

Dh is 37, can I just accuse HIM of being old? Grin

That would make me feel better...

AMumInScotland · 03/10/2012 12:02

Your DH either has the empathy of a stone, or he also needs to go see the GP - if he thinks everyone over 25 is in that much pain, he either completely underestimates what you're going through, or must be in a lot of pain himself. And I know which one I'm guessing...

The odd creak and niggle do start to come on, but not what you're describing.

AMumInScotland · 03/10/2012 12:03

Oh and I'm 45 and don't feel like that - niggles, yes, serious pain and exhaustion, no.

BrittaPerry · 03/10/2012 12:04

Dame- yes, they have... I think I had my thyroid checked last year though, when I was having mental health issues.

Would it make my hair keep falling out? And evaporate my sex drive?

OP posts:
sugarice · 03/10/2012 12:08

I think you should go back to your GP, sex drive dwindling and hair falling out sounds like you're deficient in something. How's your diet?

DameFanny · 03/10/2012 12:09

Ask about getting it checked again, and if your tsh is over 3.5 ask for more investigation.

Ime, the swelling associated with low thyroid puts extra strain on joints which may have been stressed before hence the hip pain. Also makes you more cold sensitive, and periods heavier and more frequent.

Have you noticed your hair getting coarser or your eyebrows thinning at all? That's the sort of change that creeps up on you over time so you don't notice until you look at the full picture.

Make a list of symptoms for the doctor of anything that doesn't seem right or appropriate to your agree, and good luck :-)

DameFanny · 03/10/2012 12:09

Your age even. Must preview..

DameFanny · 03/10/2012 12:11

Yy to hair loss and no sex drive as symptoms of thyroid - could still be something else, but good chance it's that, which means it's fixable.

VintageEbonyGuitar · 03/10/2012 12:11

Sounds like you do a lot of exercise. Is your work providing the right equipment for you to carry loads? You might also need to look at your bicycle fittings. Have you had them proffessionally fitted? Is the seat set properly? Badly fitting cycles, like running shoes, can cause problems as they're impacting the wrong areas. Are you warming up/down properly?

Other than that, it's not normal for your age and I hope the gp does a good mot on you Grin

aldiwhore · 03/10/2012 12:14

You need to get yourself checked out at the GP's... it could be diet/excercise related, you could be lacking in certain minerals, it could be numerous manageable medical issues and your life would be so much better if you knew!

Ignore your DH. I'm 38 and although I have a few aches and pains that's usually down to too much dancing round the living room after vodka on a Friday night. I'm not particularly healthy, haven't always treated my body with respect, over indulged on food and under indulged on exercise, but I don't feel 'shot'... definitely get checked out, and ignore your DH, he's too young to turn into a grumpy old man.

Ephiny · 03/10/2012 12:15

Definitely not normal, especially when you're only in your 20s! I would definitely get those symptoms checked out, if it's been going on a while.

When you say you're 'limping for a week every month', is it at a particular time, i.e. related to your period/cycle?

CarpeThingy · 03/10/2012 12:16

I'm 43, with bad circulation that leads to stiffness/loss of feeling in my fingers. I was also recently diagnosed with early(ish)-onset osteoarthritis, so get "twinges". But I don't suffer anything like what you're describing. Your dh is being obstructive for reasons of his own Hmm . Get yourself to a doctor. I hope they can sort things out for you.

mertin · 03/10/2012 12:19

I think you can get to a stage where you overdo it with young dc. I've certainly had some of those symptoms but I'm over 40.

I did get checked out and it wasn't anything they could put their finger on.

At 27 - it could be overdoing things but I think your gp would take you seriously and give you some blood tests at least.

There's no harm in getting checked out is what I'm trying to say.

iknowwho · 03/10/2012 12:20

Seriously you need to be checked out by a GP.
I am 47 and don't have any of those symptoms or conditions.

Go for a health MOT

sugarice · 03/10/2012 12:26

I meant to say , I'm 44 and don't ache at all and I walk miles most days. Your symtoms aren't age related at 27. Have you been checked for arthritis?
