to be shocked by worldwide school trips?

In the recent teacher and pupil grooming case, it mentioned they had been on a school trip to los Angeles this year?! Since when did educating children require trips across the globe? When I was young, a day trip to a museum was the norm and the absolute most we did was an overnight trip in a youth hostel in wales.

Aibu to think these trips are a ridiculous idea and a jolly for the teachers, as presumably their ticket is included in the fees paid by the parents? Secondly, shouldnt these trips be stopped now that teachers can't be trusted not to groom our children on such trips?

I think the only response to this statement can be FFS.

You could always home ed.

Agree with everything that YouOldSlag said.

And having helped out on a day long primary school trip recently, YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU to assume that any trip is a jolly for the teachers. It is incredibly hard work, but they do it for their students.

DelhiCalling · 03/10/2012 09:39

Worra do you not care that a teacher used a holiday to groom a child?! Should we not protect against this?

Would said child protection agent have dark glasses, a trenchcoat with upturned collar and a notepad?

CP Agent. Daftest thing I've read in ages! Grin

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/10/2012 09:41

You must be trying to wind people up, surely you aren't that thivk? What makes you think a 'child protection agent' is any less likely to groom a child.

Btw, its unlikely it all happened in LA, there would have been plenty of oppurtunity to groom in the uk. Do you think all classes, sports, clubs etc should be groomed too?

Lougle · 03/10/2012 09:42

As the case of the teacher/pupil situation in the news, he hasn't stood trial yet, so it's a bit presumptious to state that she was 'groomed'. All that is clear is that she left the country with him willingly, and that as her teacher, he has automatically committed an offence.

TroublesomeEx · 03/10/2012 09:42

Dehli The fact is that all schools have a Designated Child Protection Teacher/Officer who will be at school all day, everyday (usually the HT or DHT) and they missed everything that happened at school in that case.

There will be someone on the trip who is responsible for Child Protection/Safeguarding because they need to make sure the children are safe on the trip.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/10/2012 09:42

I meant THICK, obviously.

TroublesomeEx · 03/10/2012 09:43

I think we got that EnglishGirl.

I think we're all pretty much on the same page anyway Wink

DelhiCalling · 03/10/2012 09:44

English, do you think teachers are all moral?the recent case has surely proven not?

OP posts:
EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/10/2012 09:44

Just thought I would make sure Wink

Whitecherry · 03/10/2012 09:44

There are a few posters around today deliberately posting inflammatory stuff

Have we been invaded....again?

WorraLiberty · 03/10/2012 09:45

Worra do you not care that a teacher used a holiday to groom a child?! Should we not protect against this?

Are you suggesting that anyone who doesn't buy into your Daily Mail type hysteria doesn't care?

Anyway, who would chaperone the 'child protection agents'?

I mean, what if they're all in cahoots with one another? Shock

It's probably best we keep our children in a cupboard and just slide flat foods under the door.

sue52 · 03/10/2012 09:47

Delhi I am surprised you would let your child attend school what with all those dangerous teachers lurking around.

DelhiCalling · 03/10/2012 09:47

Folk - I am aghast, how did the child protection officer not know about the hand holding on the plane? It seems all the students did? Perhaps the accompanying agent should be randomly selected and not part of the school, to prevent collusion with the teacher.

OP posts:
EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/10/2012 09:48

No I don't think all teachers are moral but I don't think its helpful to assume they're all just itching to groom children on school trips. It just fuels hysteria and overshadows the good work that many teachers do.
Are you really not going to allow your child to go on school trips, join scouts, go to a youth club, join a sports team?

noblegiraffe · 03/10/2012 09:48

I'm not just a teacher, I'm a maths teacher. I'm doubly not to be trusted with your children.

All maths teachers should be accompanied by a child protection officer at all times. Won't somebody think of the children?

Fluffy1234 · 03/10/2012 09:48

Perhaps if the op had been on more trips he or she wouldn't come across as so narrow minded.

DelhiCalling · 03/10/2012 09:50

I would like to say I don't think ALL teachers groom, but there are obviously some we need to guard against.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/10/2012 09:50

noble maths teachers are the worst Wink

Butkin · 03/10/2012 09:51

Our nearest school takes children to camp in Nepal. Sadly for DD her only foreign trip is to the Normandy beaches in year 7 but I'm sure she is looking forward to it. I know it will be very interesting for her and very hard work for her teachers - for which we're very grateful.

MadgeHarvey · 03/10/2012 09:51

Fluffy1234 - I can't help thinking it's incredibly generous of you to credit the OP with any kind of a mind - narrow or otherwise!

TroublesomeEx · 03/10/2012 09:53

Dehli well, not having been on the plane I don't know for sure.

However, I would suspect that (as is often the case on these trips) the designated CP/safeguarding person on that trip would have conducted their risk assessments and decided that placing a member of staff at strategic points on the plane would be enough.

I'm in primary. I've taken school children on school trips. I've sat upstairs with 2 parent volunteers and a TA amongst all the children. I keep an eye on what's going on, but I can't see exactly what is happening all the time.

The kids probably noticed because they would have been sitting nearby. The other members of staff would be scattered about.

Can I be the first to boo and hiss at you noblegiraffe and blame you for all the ills in the world.

DelhiCalling · 03/10/2012 09:53

Noble I expect that you are a good teacher, but we must all do more to protect from the predators. Surely this case showed that?

OP posts:
DelhiCalling · 03/10/2012 09:54

Noble this teachers colleagues didnt see that he wasn't fit to escort children on a trip, do you think teachers need more training in child protection?
