OK, so i was in the card shop, the customer in front of me asks for "a four candle" - i chuckle and say "I've never heard that in real life, it's like the 2 Ronnies!"

blank stares from both customer and shop assistant. Blush
Had to try to explain the word play involved - neither of them even seem to have heard of the 2 Ronnies never mind the flippin hilarious sketch to which I was referring.

Maybe I am just ancient.
Still, I went on my way still chuckling to myself about it.

I'd have laughed.

Had a very similar experience in Sainsbury's a couple of weeks ago - we needed a 4 and a 0, they had every other number except 4, the late teen/early 20s shop assistant we asked laughed too

A comedy classic. I'm buying a 4 candles t-shirt for my dad for his birthday this year!

DancehallDaze · 30/09/2012 20:58

There's a pub in Oxford called The Four Candles. (Quite a new one, a Wetherspoons). Never occurred to me that it might be lost on some people.

Love love love that sketch. I also like to do varying takes on the Morecambe and Wise 'I am playing all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order' sketch whenever I mark timelines.

Empusa · 30/09/2012 21:08

Hahaha brilliant

FeathersMcGraw · 30/09/2012 21:34

DD 2 is 4 tomorrow and I've been replaying that sketch in my head all week each time I think of her cake Grin

Between this thread and another one about geeky puzzles, I really feel MN is my spiritual home tonight :o

Hahaha mydog not seen that one before. "all it does is mess up windows" :o

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 30/09/2012 21:55

Grin I love it. Friend sent it to me when Blackberry had their massive outage a few months ago. Love "egg box £3.60"

shattereddreams · 30/09/2012 22:00

Mydog never saw that. Fantastic

Fuzzpig - I can never remember how that sketch ends, thank you, you have made my night Thanks

fuzzpig · 30/09/2012 22:25

Aww thanks Blush I haven't seen it in years but it stuck with me - I hope it's an accurate memory! I've just put 'best of the two Ronnies' on my amazon wishlist, apparently it includes that sketch.

AnneElliott · 30/09/2012 22:30

I love that sketch too. Amazing how many people haven't seen famous comedy programmes though! I was thrown out of court once to compose myself after the judge and appellant's solicitor were commiserating over a missing bundle. They kept repeating "I'm appalled" to each other over and over again. They then asked me what I thought and I snorted really loudly Grin was sent out to compose myself. ( famous scene from Yes Minister)

tazzle22 · 30/09/2012 22:35

lol thanks mydogs ........ loved that sketch, not seen it before

the 4 candles on is a classic and phantom I would not have been able to resist commenting in the shop either

BackforGood · 30/09/2012 22:40

I would have cracked up too - I am old, but then, so would dd1, and she's 14... it's one of her favourite comedy moments (along with Fawlty Towers) Grin.
Would love to have been there watching you try to reference it without either of them knowing what you were talking about Grin

AdoraBell · 30/09/2012 22:52

I too love that sketchGrin

DDs were relaying, in Spanish, Monty Python's dead parrot sketch to a classmate in the car. I was PMSL whilst driving.
