AIBU? I was in a shop today...it is a nice shop, a large independant one that sells homewares.

It has a long aisle in one part....not terribly narrow but it was busy with prams, trolleys and people....I was walking near to one side of the display...going along at a normal pace, when I see that coming towards me from the far end is a big, tall, shop assistant...a lad of about 22 or so...he's going like the clappers and is heading right fr me as he's also hugging the sides of the aisle to avoid the trolleys etc.

[disclaimer...I don't have big fat legs in woolly tights as my username might suuggest....there's not much of me at all)

As he gets closer he does that thing people do when they stick one arm in front of them to sort of force you aside....and said "Scuse me!"

And I said "No....you excuse me." and stood my ground.

Who's he to make the customer walk into the onslaught of buggies, prams, people and trollies so HE can get past like his time is more important?

He sort of giggled as he was so surprised and then he went round me.

WIBU? Why should I go around HIM? I was taught when I worked in shops that you waited for the customer to finish what they were doing or went the long way round!

I've noticed this in loads of shops lately...assistant who rush around like the clappers and practically shove you out of the way.

I'm not really aiming my posts at you, FatLegs, honest! I'm just saying about customers in general entitled twats, a lot of them.

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCatsAgain · 30/09/2012 10:38

Well tights you never know what his revenge might be so always be ready for it Grin

Tbh I'd have moved. He said excuse me and I'd have been happy with that.

badtime · 30/09/2012 10:39

Customers need to treat people working in shops with respect. They are not lesser beings, they are people doing a job. This is often forgotten when customers* start complaining about poor treatment by shop staff - the customers were usually being unpleasant and unreasonable and disrespectful [not related to OP, this just seems to have been a misunderstanding].

  • incidentally, the only people who I have ever heard saying 'the customer is always right' are customers.
BupcakesAndCunting · 30/09/2012 10:42

Hell, if he'd said scuse me to me, I'd have moved and probably apologised for getting in his way Blush

HellonHeels · 30/09/2012 11:14

What we can't see or hear in a post was tone of voice and manner. There's a huge difference between a polite "excuse me please" with a nice manner and a rudely expressed "scuse me" as a precursor to barging past. Sounds to me like OP got the latter rather than the former. On that basis she is NBU.

StuntGirl · 30/09/2012 12:05

And on the basis of the rest of her posts she comes cross as pretty rude herself, so on that basis I'm less inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Snog · 30/09/2012 12:09

I agree, shop asistants should let shoppers pass and give them priority - in the context of being in a shop anything else is rude.

atacareercrossroads · 30/09/2012 13:19

You were much ruder imo

sausagesandwich34 · 30/09/2012 13:26

he can piss in a pamper???

what a lovely human being you are Hmm

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/09/2012 13:45

I worked in retail and we were trained to move aside for customers as we moved through this store. However, now I am Mrs Do As You Would Be done by and move aside for shop assistants and thank them for their help.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 30/09/2012 14:24

Sausages that was in response to the comment that Usual left...which was LIGHT HEARTED. HAve you no sense of humour?

stunt have you been doing advanced searches for my threads? Grin How sad!

OP posts:
sausagesandwich34 · 30/09/2012 14:32

nope I am completely devoid of a sense of humour when it comes to belittling human beings who you clearly think you are better than

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 30/09/2012 14:35

would love to know what OP eventually bought that made a staff members wages, her being royalty and all.

MissAnnersley · 30/09/2012 15:10

This reminds me of the 'rude TA' thread a few days ago.

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 30/09/2012 15:37

Thumb

In Tesco last summer I had just finished my shop when their was an item I hadn' been able to find. There was a group of five besuied staff members so I approached and said "excuse me".

One man turned and said "Yes, can i help you?"

when I said was looking for something he said

"Can you not ask another member of staff to help you?"

I went Hmm "Yes, I can, I'm sure another member of staff in Sainsburys can help me" and walked off leaving my trolly with them.

I was about 7 foot from the exit before he ran up to me and said "What are you doing?" Grin

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 30/09/2012 15:37

Jemma1111 · 30/09/2012 17:47

That's rich !
Oh , and I would say its YOU whose over emotional . Most people have better things to complain or worry about ......Dear.

One thing I hate more than rude entitled people is rude entitled people who, when told that they are rude and entitled, kick off in no small way that actually, no they are not and it is the rest of the world thats wrong!

Why the jeff would you post in AIBU when you are convinced that you are not?

fluffygal · 30/09/2012 19:56

I had similar the other day, shop had only just opened so was very quiet, I saw two shop assistants heading towards where I was browsing in a very narrow aisle, I moved into a side aisle to get out their way (I did not mind doing this) but did I get a thank you? Not at all! And they saw me do it and I was clearly waiting for them to pass. Some people are just plain rude. On another note I was in New Look yesterday and they couldn't be nicer if they tried balanced view amongst the retail assistant bashing I guess it made up for when they laughed at me for asking for a -shock horror- size 14 when my baby was a month old!
