AIBU to think that TV and film's use of the westccounty accent for nice but dim people, pirates and farmers is unfair?

Me and DP are watching lord of the rings in preparation for watching the hobbit when it comes out in December. My DP is not british and he very much enjoys accent spotting.

He asked me why it is allways the simple or nice but dim charactors who have a west country accent.

These are the charactors that spring to mind:

Hagrid (Harry Potter)
Meri (lord of the rings)
Vicky pollard (little Britain)
Most pirates in most film

I think this is unfair! AIBU?

YANBU. I still love the accent though.

Best ever comic usage is Bill Bailey's Clive Pocock character from his sketch show.

Really GetOrf. He would fit right in where I am. I probably sound like him the more drunk I am.

I wasn't even aware I had an accent until I went to Southampton to uni. Apparently mine is quite strong and gets worse when I am drinking. My friend is terrible. Allrriiiigghht birrrrrrd she says a lot.

I would love a liverpudlian accent. I am known for doing quite a good one. In fact if I tried to imitate any other accent and it just sounds liverpudlian. Grin

DP is Liverpudlian, I LOVE the accent. His isn't very strong though (again, except when drunk!)

Is it bad that I want to move to Liverpool just to pick up the accent. Grin

I have to admit I do love having a scouse accent (mine's not very strong though but re-emerges when with other scousers, when drunk or when shouting at the DCs!)

I can't think of any other accent I'd sooner have but the stereotyping can still be irritating.

Friday O Leary - west country. Polly Essex. Spirt of the Rainbow - home counties

I always used to read "Percy the Park Keeper" to the DCs with a West Country accent.

Anyway, pirates are cool and farmers are very useful. My Scottush accent is only deemed fit for drunks, drug dealers and psychopaths.
