Yes I know IABU but what happened to the word "pushchair"?

I know there are more important things to get annoyed by but DD has just stopped using the pushchair. It really does irritate me when people ask me where my buggy is.

It is a pushchair, I'm pretty sure buggy was a brand name or model name of a particular pushchair. A similar situation to not all vacuum cleaners being hoovers.

So I don't have a buggy but my pushchair has been put in the loft for next time. AIBU to say "we have put the pushchair in the loft " in response to " what have you done with your buggy?" and similar questions.

My youngest DC is 8. I can't remember what we used to call it.

Help! My brain is turning to mush!

SoleSource · 28/09/2012 19:15

Loathe buggy here too. yack

pinkpaperpiggy · 28/09/2012 20:17

DH and I (both Irish, born in the early '70s) remember them being called 'go cars'. It sounds so weird and old fashioned but I can clearly remember my mother telling me to put my brother in the go car.

PopOozeTheFastest · 28/09/2012 21:39

I have a pushchair, a lounge and a sofa. Grin

cabbageandbeans · 28/09/2012 22:46

FFS get a life. Does this really matter to ANYONE? Yes you are being completely unreasonable. Int eh states it is called a stroller. Get over it.

cabbageandbeans · 28/09/2012 22:47

IN THE STATES!

Helltotheno · 28/09/2012 23:11

Get over it.

Sheesh take a chill pill luv.. people on MN like discussing words so there. Go back to the states with your fancy schmancy diapers and sidewalks and strollers and bleachers and tom-AY-toes. There's a world outside the States y'know Wink

So... as we were saying... Go Car, now that's a little weird. I think I'll have to go buggy, much as I hate it. Pushchair is just a bridge too far....

Bumpstart · 28/09/2012 23:51

I avoided the term buggy for the 1st, but then when the double buggy came along I was converted. I think of an umbrella fold as a pushchair, a Huge thing with a carry cot is a pram, and anything In between like a travel system is a buggy.

Do you pushchair fans really call it a double pushchair?

cabbageandbeans · 29/09/2012 00:28

I am from the UK and I think this is THE MOST ridiculous thing I have ever seen being discussed! Me take a chill pill? You are kidding me right? The OP is offended by the word 'buggy'. Really? It's discussions like this that make me ashamed to be associated with MN.

stopthinkingsomuch · 29/09/2012 07:23

We have a tv room. Lived overseas and the design of the house had things like family room, media room and this other room which we had a tv in it so called it the tv room. Stuck even though we have a lounge.

Rhubarb78 · 29/09/2012 07:55

in this house a buggy is the cheap umbrella fold thing, pushchair is the proper pram with a seat and a pram is a lie flat carrycot thing

fusspot66 · 29/09/2012 07:59

I live in Gtr Manchester and it's called a trolley by many.

theninjabreadma · 29/09/2012 08:24

my MIL calls it a tansad, whatever that is!

qo · 29/09/2012 08:32

OT - but this thread reminded me of my sisters ex mother-in-law, RIP.

She was from North London with a very strong accent, but had moved up north to be nearer her grandkids.

When asked if she would look after them one day she replied, yeah but bring the buggy - with the London accent, my sister heard "baggy" and said.. The baggy? to keep nappies and wipes in? Grin

Here where I live, pushchairs/buggies/prams are ALL called prams.

Nagoo · 29/09/2012 08:35

The baby can say buggy. so it's a buggy.

And I like that John Hegley bit...

can I help you with that pushchair?
Can I help you with that buggy.....eyed baby?

Grin
Icesaga · 29/09/2012 09:15

Buggy is so ITV.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 29/09/2012 09:26

Grin Ices. Are you my grandmother?

Helltotheno · 29/09/2012 11:05

It's discussions like this that make me ashamed to be associated with MN.

Actually it's discussions like this make me like MN, also this is AIBU, what do you expect? You should check out some of the threads on 'words that make you boak'... v. entertaining. Of course alternatively, you could always log off MN and spend your time on onlyseriousstuff.com . Lawdy the things some people get worked up over Grin

Trolley definitely has merit. I think it'll be trolley for me from now on...

nellyjelly · 29/09/2012 22:34

Yes definately trolly in Manchester.

perfectstorm · 29/09/2012 22:48

Of all the things that make me embarrassed about Mumsnet, tongue-in-cheek conversations about language loom pretty low, I have to say. It's the sheer randomness of this place that's so entertaining.

I still want to know what became of the Pram Huns. They were all over the site in about 2009 and now, gone, or at least well-nigh invisible.

TobyLerone · 30/09/2012 07:56

My grandad calls it a tansad too! I have no idea...

totallynaive · 30/09/2012 14:52

They're all prams as far as I'm concerned. My travel system is "the pram" and my cheap foldable pushchair is "the toy pram".

Enigmosaurus · 30/09/2012 14:58

Tansad was a pram manufacturer afaik.

I call it a buggy. Most people where I am call any baby transporting wheeled device a pram. Horses for courses.

YouMayLogOut · 30/09/2012 17:04

YANBU. Pushchair is a much nicer word than "buggy".

pmTea · 02/10/2012 11:19

oh yes - I had one of the first Maclaren Baby Buggies when I was 2ish (got nicked within a week and my mum couldn't afford another, so I learnt to walk long distances from a young age Smile)
I think that's where the buggy word started - correct me if I'm wrong, but they were the first to design a totally foldable pushchair, weren't they?
