Asked at the doctors front desk for some condoms on Monday, receptionist said the nurse would leave some for me to collect on Tuesday. Great, perfectly acceptable, had one left. Wink
Picked them up. There's 12. 12? How often do they expect me to go back?!

Why aren't the men going out sorting out contraception?

why can't they buy condoms or go to the gp.?

GoldShip · 26/09/2012 12:10

Loads of men go and get condoms.

IWipeArses · 26/09/2012 12:16

If contraception is free on the NHS then abundant condoms should be free on the NHS, so we could shag as freely as if we were on the pill.

Whether or not contraception should be free on the NHS whatsoever is a different argument I guess.

The pill, coil, injections etc have to be provided by the NHS (presumably) because they require medical prescriptions or the intervention of a nurse or Dr. Condoms do not.

I can see the sense in providing free contraception, but where does it end? It would be cheaper for the NHS if I use dettol and a plaster on my child's cut knee than waiting and taking him with an infected leg requiring anti-biotics - so can I ask for free sticking plasters to put in my bathroom cupboard?

IWipeArses · 26/09/2012 12:18

Blu, so then I'm penalised for not getting along with the medical forms of contraceptions.

Why aren't the men going out sorting out contraception?

Oh my goodness if I see the words 'why can't/don't/aren't men.....' again I might cry.

Men can and do sort out contaception, however I would actively encourage both genders to take care of their own sexual health and not be reliant on anyone else doing it.

Haemadoots · 26/09/2012 12:19

Is the point of free condoms not to be available for teenagers who would not have money/be to embarrasses to buy them rather than finance your sex life? Sorry but I love the nhs

IWipeArses · 26/09/2012 12:22

And actually Blu the pill etc. doesn't have to be provided by the NHS, they could make it private only if they wanted to, being fertile isn't an illness after all.

Haemadoots, presumably you pay for your own contraception?

OP posts:
Haemadoots · 26/09/2012 12:22

Yes I do

IWipeArses · 26/09/2012 12:24

Well, alright then. Grin
Do you get self righteous at people on the pill too?

OP posts:
Haemadoots · 26/09/2012 12:28

No but as its been said the pill is prescribed no option to buy it Wink

IWipeArses · 26/09/2012 12:37

I'm sure it's available over the internets from Mexico etc. They're just not trying.

OP posts:
Blu · 26/09/2012 12:37

Haemadoots wasn't self righteous!

It's a discussion, a pov.

Should formula be provided on the NHS because otherwise ff-ers are being penalised for not getting on with, or choosing, ff?

Anyway, condoms are being provided free - just not at huge quantities in any one go.

ethelb · 26/09/2012 12:41

@blu because the risk of infection is very very low. And actually if he cut it v badly you could go to a+e for treatment where it would be disinfected and dressed, free at the point of access.
Plus the cost of treating an infected wound is low (course of antibs in most cases) where as a pregnancy costs around £4k for a healthy one with "natural" delivery.

Itchywoolyjumper · 26/09/2012 12:43

I would say your GP is trying to cut down on waste.
In general 10-12 condoms could last for quite some time and it may be that they don't want then to go out of date before they are used. I've also found that people don't trust condoms when the wrappers look a bit old and tatty so that might be a factor too. In our place you can only get 10 at a time but you are more than welcome to come back time and again for them.

ClaimedByMe · 26/09/2012 12:48

I get offered mountians of free condoms when I see the nurse, are they latex free says I, not on the NHS says nurse, off I plod to boots to buy 5 latex free for a tenner!!!

IWipeArses · 26/09/2012 12:51

Claimed, that's terrible!

OP posts:
AKissIsNotAContract · 26/09/2012 13:56

claimed, they have latex-free much cheaper than boots on the link I posted near the start of the thread.

AmberLeaf · 26/09/2012 13:58

You can get the latex free ones on the NHS but only if you have had allergy tests to prove you do indeed have a latex allergy.

Why should people with latex allergy have to pay for latex free condoms when everyone else gets them free? even if its only 12

AKissIsNotAContract · 26/09/2012 14:01

72 latex-free for 20quid is a lot better than 5 for a tenner

Agree you should be able to get latex-free for free though.

helenthemadex · 26/09/2012 15:06

go back tomorrow and ask for some more, would love to see cat bum face if you did that Grin

ClaimedByMe · 26/09/2012 16:35

Thanks for the link AKiss

I have never been tested for a latex allergy but I have been treated and my notes all say latex allergy on them so the medical people use latex free gloves when examining me.
