To come off the pill

Sorry if there is TMI here...

I have been on the pill on and off for the last 11 years. I started getting migraines which affected my eyesight (not very often) and mentioned to the GP and was taken off the pill immediately. Some time later I wanted back on so tried a diff pill which didn't agree with me - was pretty much bleeding for about 3 months so gave up with that one. After another break and after meeting DP, I asked to go back onto the pill (he would rather not use condoms and I wanted to for the convenience of regulating my periods a bit more).
I've been on this one (cilest) for nearly 4 years now, and have been getting chronic thrush, almost once every couple of months. I just realised (I know a bit slow!) that I think it started when I started the pill. After a bit of research I discovered that it can in fact be a side-effect.

So...once this pill packet finishes I'd like to stop the pill and tell my DP he will have to use condoms. I am sick of putting chemicals into my body and feel I've suffered enough! I know he won't like the idea, and will probably think it's a ploy to get pregnant! It's not, although I won't deny that I wouldn't be overjoyed if it accidentally happened!

Hearing about the coil had opened up a whole new world to me - had never considered it before. Seems to have so many mixed reviews about some finding it great and some horrendous. I suppose that's the same for all types tho...

I have had two copper coils - the first was only for about a year in between dc1 and 2, and I got pregnant immediately after having had it taken out. The second I have had for 6 years. I really like it - like you I am not really comfortable with taking extra hormones. They may be reluctant to give it to you if you say that you are hoping to get pregnant soon, simply for cost effectiveness reasons, so you might wish to be non-committal about your plans.

angeltattoo · 25/09/2012 22:27

Also, I did actually go to my GP and ask for the coil, but actaully they really weren't keen as I had had no children and due to the potential infection risk in those that want kids in the future, my practice don't like doing it.

My SIL has no kids and has a coil, so different GPs might have differing policies. The copper one, I think. Her periods are awful though.

Good luck OP! it sounds like you have been honest, he will work it out in the end!

AKissIsNotAContract · 25/09/2012 22:34

Is there any chance that you and your DP are passing thrush back and forth between you?

LadyofWinterfell · 25/09/2012 22:41

I am on my second copper coil, had the first between DD2 and DS. I had a couple of very heavy periods at first, but since then they've been regular and normal for me. I can't have hormonal contraception as it plays havoc with my depression, so this was a godsend.

I concieved DS 4 days after having my first one removed BTW! :o

BurlingtonBertieFromBow · 25/09/2012 22:47

I have got a copper coil, and it's great. Like you I was fed up with putting hormones in my body that gave me spots and made me feel depressed. The first period was heavier than normal (but not longer) and after that it was fine. I have not had a pregnancy scare in 3 years of having it. I don't even have to think about contraception until March 2014 when I get it replaced. It was slightly painful to have put in but no big. I have no kids.

demisemiquaver · 25/09/2012 23:22

YANBU! how would he like thrush?! tho' is it poss he's reinfecting you due to not liking condoms?

jellybeans · 26/09/2012 00:07

I have mirena and its great. My periods were flooding and dreadful. I was housebound two days a month. But now I don't have periods. No weight gain etc. I did have one removed years ago as gained weight and had spots. Assumed it was mirena but it turned out same it wasn't. Went back on it and it has been fine.

ErikNorseman · 26/09/2012 04:32

Thedetective if condoms keep splitting then they are being used wrong. You need to make sure you buy the right size and pinch the end before putting it on. Too small can cause it to burst or if air is allowed to get trapped under the condom.
Honestly, if used properly they almost never split.

Slumberparty · 26/09/2012 05:39

No am pretty sure he is not re-infecting me - he would have symptoms wouldn't he? Plus often get it around the same time of my cycle so think it is something to do with hormone changes.
