so -does anyone really use the word 'besides'

was watching Corrie and couldn't help noticing that lots of the characters kept using the word 'besides' - for eg 'I don't want you to do it Tina. Besides, it's not normal.'

My point is, does anyone in real life ever use the word 'besides' in normal conversation? It was bugging me because I don't think anyone actually says it. They would say 'Anyway, it's not normal' iyswim

Are TV scriptwriters getting it wrong or are there lots of people who use that word and I've never met them?

My DH says, 'Forebyewhich'....which means besides Grin. But he is very Scottish. He has lots of luvverly sayings. I was crouched down the other day and he said to me, 'What are you daeing on your cuddyhunkers, hen?' What a fab word!

Floggingmolly · 25/09/2012 21:04

Yes, I use it all the time. What do you use instead?

pointythings · 25/09/2012 21:58

I use it all the time, both in writing and in conversation, it's not a strange word. Besides, it's good to keep the quirks of the English language alive.

OK sowornout. I get daeing and hen in your Dh's sentence but what on earth is a cuddyhunkers?

deleted203 · 26/09/2012 00:27

CaliforniaLeaving if you are 'on your cuddyhunkers' apparently it means you are squatting down....sort of 'hunkering down' I think....I just rather liked it because it was so bizarre! Grin

doinmummy · 26/09/2012 00:31

I'm SE and I use it.

randomfemale · 26/09/2012 00:33

LibrarianByDay · 26/09/2012 00:50

Yes! Besides, what else use instead?

SarahStratton · 26/09/2012 01:46

Next to? Confused

I thought everyone used 'besides'. I can't think of anything else to use.

CaliforniaLeaving · 26/09/2012 02:33

sowornot I love it must find a way to sneak that into a conversation Grin

SpaceCorpsDirective34124 · 26/09/2012 07:08

I do. It's a fairly normal, everyday word, I thought.

iscream · 26/09/2012 07:39
