to wonder why people have stopped using the word 'me'?

I am dying a little bit inside everytime somebody writing on here or speaking on tv or even in business emails says 'she came over to talk to myself and my partner' or 'please email myself' or soooo many other examples.

What has become wrong with the word 'me'? Why does it seem that the whole world is slowly moving over to using myself instead of me?

I am not usually very pedantic about language, it evolves, fair enough, and my own spelling and grammar can be dodgy when typing quickly in an informal situation but this one for some reason really gets me - myself is longer to write than me!

This thread us really making me (myself) laugh. It does tend to be used by people who want to sound formal. I once did a holiday job in a WH Smith and every morning the manager used to say 'Would you like to come over to myself...'.
Grrr.

sunflowerseeds · 25/09/2012 19:11

Yourselves hate this and it's the same for myself but everytime I correct it I get flamed for being rude. What would yourselves do, please tell myself.

Themumsnot · 25/09/2012 19:15

Disagree about the Hiberno-Irish, Tarantula. I'm Irish and I don't use myself in that way and I don't know any Irish people who do. You might use it colloquially in the context of saying, for instance 'How's yourself' but not in the manner used on this thread - that is hyper-genteel usage (worried about using me because they have the idea that it is 'wrong').

Nickel - the 'It is I usage is because the verb to be takes the same case after it as before it.

SpicyPear · 25/09/2012 19:21

Oh, I'm quite relieved to find so many sensible folk in one place. Incorrect use of myself, yourself and, worst of all, yourselves makes me want to poke my eyes out with sticks. One of the worst offenders I know is a very successful City management consultant type. He uses one of these inappropriately at least three times per email and one day I'm going to break down and send a hideously rude correction back.

MarysBeard · 25/09/2012 19:51

Lots of people of my generation weren't taught grammar properly at school (mid thirties). My English grammar improved a lot from studying French. But still I only learned some grammar rules from pedantic bosses correcting my emails.

Me myself and I was one thing I used to get wrong. The other was writing "Which I am referring to" rather than "to which I am referring". Another was the correct use of it's/its.

I put it down to the rise of foreign travel and hearing air hostesses on the plane saying "Any beverages for yourself madam?" Grin

It is like nails down a blackboard for me.

Coconutter · 25/09/2012 20:16

Ah, a blissful corner of the world where people still care about correct grammar. I love you all Grin

Don't get me started on 'could of'...

Binkybix · 25/09/2012 20:31

finallygotroundtoit your quote by the estate agent really tickled me. Tears in my eyes, cramping stomach, pissing myself LAUGHING! Thanks for cheering me up after a crappy day at work :)

Jux · 25/09/2012 20:38

Some years ago, DH started responding to "would you like a cuppa?" with "not for me". Drives me barmy. Who else was I offering it to? I used to reply "would you like one for somebody else then?" but to no avail. Sad

catstail · 25/09/2012 20:49

hang on,how come you can say Bob and me, surely that's not right is it??? I would always say Bob and I eg, He sent an email to Bob and I. [dunce?] [brainy?]

SpicyPear · 25/09/2012 20:52

Take out the other person catstail.

"He sent an email to I".

Doesn't make sense. Me is correct. HTH.

maybenow · 25/09/2012 20:57

bob and I wrote the email
but
the email was sent to bob and me (though i might choose to say me and bob, depends on the emphasis)

I agree with th op.
Another bugbear I have is the proprty programmes where everyone talks
about the 'space', in 'oh this is a nice space' when they mean a nice
/big room. I've never heard anyone in real life refer to the rooms in their home as spaces.

mirry2 · 25/09/2012 21:10

Su8nflowerseeds 'Yourselves hate this and it's the same for myself but everytime I correct it I get flamed for being rude. What would yourselves do, please tell myself. '
That made me laugh out loud Grin

catstail · 25/09/2012 21:19

naicespam - ha ha ha ha !!!!

EvenBetter · 25/09/2012 21:20

I haven't noticed the bastardisation of 'myself', possibly because where I live people instead say things like 'I SEEN THAT, SO I DID, WHEN I DONE THAT LAST WEEK, SO IT WAS.'

And today I noticed myself watching some footballer on tv talking and I was mentally goading him into saying 'obviouslyobviouslyobviously' so I could angrily press the button on the remote.

I'm not brave enough to go on pedant's corner because of my lack of understanding of apostrophes. (but never for you're, didn't, etc.)

P.s. On a tube of glue I have it says 'ideal for paper photo's ect'

weeps

TraineeBabyCatcher · 25/09/2012 21:37

Myself and bob has literally NEVER encountered this problem. ;)

Im not sure i have ever come across anyone who uses myself instead of me.

Don't weep, EvenBetter, the apostrophe on the glue is indicating the missing "graph" in photographs.

I agree it looks awkward, though.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 25/09/2012 22:25

It drives myself mad.
Have never heard any of my Irish family use it.

Coconutter · 25/09/2012 22:32

Our CEO sent an email last week addressed to All Team Leader's. Angry think I should be boss instead as I can write properly

Bilbobagginstummy · 25/09/2012 22:33

Betty and I are going shopping.
Betty and I are going shopping to buy something for me.
Betty and I are going shopping to buy something for me. I will make the choice myself.

I are going shopping with Betty.
