The amount of times I am in a public bathroom and women come out of the cubicle, look at themselves in the mirror, touch their hair, and then walk out without washing their hands is ridiculous. At least a quarter. No exaggeration.

Is it just where I live? Does it happen where you are?

There is nothing, NOTHING you could do in a cubicle that does not require hand washing afterwards.

I am seriously tempted every time to chase the woman out and publicly shout 'Ew, please wash your hands. That is so gross' to humiliate them into washing in future. OK, yes that would be BU but so tempting.

I'm sorry, this is more of a rant than an AIBU.

Nannyogg, I'd thrown the paper towels in the bin before I opened the door, so I had dry hands. So now, instead of throwing them in the bin I open the door and dry my hands in public to avoid any misunderstandings.

zzz its not just the soap, its the water as well, its a pain when I go on holiday cause obviously I have to shower in different water then too, and it affects my whole body :(

Generally I try to avoid public toilets anyway, and a lot of the time the ones I do use have open doors. But youre right, I shouldnt use other peoples dirtiness as an excuse to wait til outside, so from now on I'll do it inside and outside :) but I still cant actually wash.....

Anniegetyourgun · 25/09/2012 11:16

Ithinkitsjustme ah, ok, fair enough.

And Beyondthelimits, you have my apology and my sympathy for your eczema. (I bet it doesn't apply to most of the people who don't wash though.) Sounds like a good suggestion from ZZZenAgain re bringing your own soap.

ZZZenAgain · 25/09/2012 11:21

eczema is a real trial. Have you always had it?

oldraver · 25/09/2012 11:23

I think its rank and always think scummy bugger when someone walks out without washing.

My Dad was once gone ages in the loo (long enough for my Mum to wonder what he was up to). He had been washing his hands when someone walked out of a cubicle and straight out without washing their hands. Dad wouldn't touch the door and apparently stood waiting for someone to come through and open it

I have a small windchime hanging off the towel rail and it has the added bonus of telling you the towel has been used

To those who said no one died from a dirty lift button I have one thing to say.

S.a.r.s.

susitwoshoes · 25/09/2012 11:35

kind of related, but I'm always astonished at people not putting the lid of the loo down before flushing, thereby stopping poo spores etc from flying out of the loo. It's got a lid for a reason, people!

I must say if I'd nipped into the loo for some clothes adjustment it wouldn't occur to me to wash my hands, I don't even think about the handles. I am very slovenly though. I shall do so from now on.

TroublesomeEx · 25/09/2012 11:36

Oh we close the lid.

And I had to police DH's handwashing. He used to wash his hands before flushing.

Before!

I ask you!!

Latara · 25/09/2012 11:37

Beyond - can you carry a small tube / mini container of eg Aqueous cream when you use public loos?

Also at work we use a Tena cream for cleaning patients with fragile or broken skin who are incontinent - for some reason you don't need to rinse it off.

I think that the Tena cream cleanser is ok for most skins but i'm not sure; it definitely seems gentle; you'd have to check with a Pharmacist or Dermatologist, then order it from a pharmacy.

I'm also unsure of its germ killing effectiveness but it's better than hurting your hands more with soap & water when you have a skin condition.

Ithinkitsjustme · 25/09/2012 11:42

Loads of public toilets don't even have lids! Funniest thing I did was sit on one the loos with an "No touch" flush, shifted my butt and set it off when I was sitting on the loo - gave me a heart attack! Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 25/09/2012 11:51

Yep, ive had eczema since i was a baby, plus i have psoriasis too :(
The psoriasis is much worse atm too, which is apparently common postpartum. I feel like I'm falling apart!!

But yep, probably not true of most non-hand washers. It makes me paranoid anyway that my skin is all scabby, without adding on the paranoia that everyone is noticing im a dirty non-hand washer...

Fairylea · 25/09/2012 12:04

Just to play devil's advocate....

I once heard jean Claude van damme say that he never washes his hands as his penis was cleaner than any public toilet.

You do wonder.....

HereBenson · 25/09/2012 12:49

I use antiseptic hand gel so if you see a woman ostentatiously getting a little bottle out of her bag it is probably me Blush
What I hate more than anything (side issue) is that in my local Tesco they put spare loo roll on top of the sani bin. Yuk yuk yuk.
