To not bother going down the Tooth Fairy route?

I have 2 dc, the eldest is 5.5 so probably about to start losing teeth. Iabu in planning to tell them there's no such thing as the tooth fairy? It just seems a bit much really, and quite a lot of effort to maintain the lie! When I was little the tooth fairy used to be quite unreliable, often leaving the tooth under the pillow for a few days- I suspect it might be similar nowadays.

Obviously I'm a total hypocrite as we have done Father Christmas and love the magic of that. But, I soon put a stop to the bloody Easter Bunny at MILs house!

I don't do the Easter bunny, don't know anyone who does!

We do Tooth Fairy but not Easter Bunny.

DD gets a pound for each baby teeth. Makes the stress (possibly pain) of losing them much easier to take.

She puts it on her bed side table with a note (usually saying not to take it away - she keeps them in a little china pot).

She had to have one taken out at the dentists last week because it was splitting and bleeding. She was horrified when the dentist said it was shattered so no tooth fairy.

She wrote a note with the next one and still magically got two pounds for the pair.

We don't do "pocket money" so Tooth Fairy money is her way of getting cash.

Well our tooth fairy is quite fussy, she will only deliver to and collect from a little purse that hangs on the outside of a bedroom door. The tooth fairy, like Father Christmas doesn't like the thought that they may wake a sleeping child so stay out of the room.

OddGoldBoots that's a very cute and good idea, tooth fairy may become as fussy in our house in future

FerrisBueller1972 · 27/09/2012 20:10

Oldgoldboots - genius! I was about to add that in no way shape or form get a little pewter tooth fairy standing on a pewter box .... It is nigh on impossible to be on tooth fairy duty with that noisy little fucker of an idea. In our house the tooth fairy always re-delivers the tooth back the following night into a keepsake box.

Why? Why did I set myself up to do this?

Madness. Grin

My one abiding memory of the tooth fairy is the time one of my teeth dropped out while I was brushing and went down the plug hole. I was distraught as the tooth fairy obviously wouldn't have been able to find it down there! My useless at DIY dad actually took the plumbing apart to rescue it, and he was my hero for weeks Grin

Can't believe some people leave the tooth under the pillow for days. When my ds looses his first tooth it will be a big deal for him. Parents should put some effort in.

Floggingmolly · 27/09/2012 22:08

Wow, Dave, bet it's a barrel of laughs in your house Hmm
Op, yes YABU. It's a little bit of magic for a 5 year old...

I wasn't planning on doing the tooth fairy but my mum told ds1 about it so I went along with it. It didnt last long as I kept forgetting and I'm actually really squeamish about teeth. So now I don't bother with my others. Their tooth falls out, they get told to put it in the bin! They don't get money for it.

Worst mother ever! We don't do Easter bunny either and I don't buy them eggs (overpriced crap) though they get one from others usually. We do do Father Christmas and magic reindeer food etc so hopefully I redeem myself a little bit!

Ilovechocspread - it happens, but its not exactly intentional.
