Childcare & GPs

Would like some other points of view on this - am feeling a bit cross & upset....

A temporary change in our childcare arrangements means that from next January, we will be short of childcare one day a month, until about June. We cant afford to put our children in nursery for this day, and there is no guarantee there would be a space on this infrequent basis.

We asked mil & fil if there is any chance they could help us out, and they have said no.

It does mean they'd gave to travel the night before, as we live some distance away.

They are often saying that if we need help we only need to ask....

Have we been unreasonable to ask?

Allnewtaketwo- you summarise the issue excellently!

It doesn't sound like a childminder going on maternity leave, as the op says the shortfall is one day a month. It sounds more like whoever is providing childcare currently, will have some other temporary commitment (maybe some sort of training course) which leaves these 6 days uncovered . My point was: if the person who normally provides care is paid, then simply use the money to cover the care by someone else. The normal childcare provider can't expect payment for days they are dropping! If on the other hand the op doesn't pay the current childcarer, then like allnew says, she needs to take a reality check and start saving some money between now and January to cover the costs. Thousands of working parents have to pay out hundreds every month all year round, so it's difficult to sympathise with someone begrudging paying for 6 days! If necessary its worth taking out a loan to cover the cost if it keeps you both in work.

good post janey68

op, will you come back and explain it a bit more?

BlueSkySinking · 25/09/2012 19:37

I'd look for a child minder who would only do the 6 days mentioned. Ring round

I was about to suggest what bluey said - find a CM who can do the dates you need, they'll possibly be cheaper than a nursery. If this is temporary then you've got time to eke out the money from somewhere (or can you ask ILs to sub you?)

im a sahm and would do it if asked, is there no one you know?
