To sell my mums fur coats??

They are real fur (im not sure what they are, i think there are a couple of rabbit so less value) all vintage, she has five of them Shock I haven't a clue where she got them from, she wouldn't have bought them new, they are at least 40 years old.

Now I am categorically anti-fur, have taken part in demos etc in my past. And a rather questionable sit in in a fur department of a posh department store in my rebellious youth Blush So, i really don't want to be supporting the fur-trade in any way shape or form. But i have noticed that there seems to be a bit of a revival for vintage fur coats.

Yesterday whilst visiting a collectors fair i noticed coats similar to my mother's for £500, you could have knocked me over wiht a feather. I asked the guy if the woman selling them (she wasn't there) was interested in buying fur and he said she was. I have spoken to my mum and she is interested, well she had actually asked me to take them to the charity shop for her a couple of months back.

AIBU to think i could get a reasonable sum for these? I would never myself wear a fur coat, vintage or otherwise and i would imagine that many other people would feel the same way as i do. I would be (on my mums behalf - but actually im willing to bet she would share the pickings!) very VERY happy to get £200 each for the coats, if she is selling them for 5!!!!

I have an underlying feeling that im mad though!

Ps.....if they're not yours to bin, they're not yours to sell. Animals have been robbed of their lives to satisfy some dumb idea of fashion and you're robbing your mother of her coats - to bin or sell as her choice for a way of making a bit of cash ....... Nice

sunflowers - that was my initial thoughts until i saw them on sale for a significant sum, so i would be quite happy to sell them on to the dealer for her not to be able to shift ;)

So calming iam genuinely confused. If your aibu question really was just about how much cash you could raise, why even bother mentioning your previous anti fur actions and professed anti fur views? Surely they were an irrelevant side issue. Whether or not yabu to sell, it seems a bit unreasonable to raise the whole moral issue and then get a bit miffed when people reply by talking about the moral issue.

TheCalmingManatee · 23/09/2012 18:54

I'm not miffed, i think they all actually make valid points actually.

My point of raising my views, as i have said is that i would assume my views on fur are shared by the majority, i do however think that vintage fur is a different thing (I guess that is where the crux of the argument lies), so the moral issue is relevant because if everyone felt the same, i may as well bin them as they wont be woth selling - iyswim

It's different because it suits you that way.

If you knew anything about the fur trade you'd know it isn't different.

MordionAgenos · 23/09/2012 18:56

@missymoomoomee Exactly.

Rowanhart · 23/09/2012 18:57

I wear my fur all the time. Mostly I get compliments and people wanting to stroke them.

Only had one person behave like a nutter at a party. Tried to grab my coat to burn. It's 80 years old. Really getting so upset about an animal which has been dead since before your Nan was born seems a bit silly to me. Also as she'd been chowing down on a sausage and was wearing leather boots itseemed a bit rich.

I've been offered£300 for my silver fox a vintage fair so £500 seems quite reasonable for the right thing. They're not for sale as I inherited them and fully intend to give them to my daughter.

There's a shop I'm Tynemouth which sells fur coats up to £1000 so might be worth contacting them if it's something special.

Banning the new fur trade would be a great thing. There sre enough beautiful antique coats in circulation. And I'm a strong believer in recycling.

Give them a decent burial

IvanaHumpalot · 23/09/2012 21:10

The new fur market perpetuates the vintage market. The vintage market fuels the new market and so on... If you can't afford new...

People like fur - why wouldn't they. It's beautiful, soft and warm. It never went away, just off the radar for a while. It's becoming more prevalent on the catwalks again (see Prada et al). There's no taboo in wearing it on the street anymore.

Would I want to wear something which caused so much suffering? NO.

'Lucky' are the animals that are farmed on the EU licensed farms. Do you think that all that fur comes from only these places? Look at the trimmings on those 'cheap' scarves and boots. Throw away fashion at bargin prices. Disposable clothes, disposable animals.

IvanaHumpalot · 23/09/2012 21:12

Oh, and vintage was new once. How long does it take new to become vintage, thereby morally acceptable?

BlueSkySinking · 23/09/2012 21:14

Yep sell them and use the money for the course.

GoldShip · 23/09/2012 21:16

Makes me really sad this thread.

Ivana has made 2 brilliant posts.

Rowanhart · 23/09/2012 21:24

Why can't we just ban it now. Nothing new. Keep the old.

fuzzysnout · 23/09/2012 21:30

OP you will be supporting the fur trade. You claim not to wish to do so, but it seems that you only feel your morals important if you don't stand to gain financially. You will be perpetuating a sick trade in which animals are horrifically treated and killed for fashion. How can you live with yourself if your views are as you claim?

brodyboo · 23/09/2012 21:35

OP, go onto you tube and watch the film Earthlings with Joquain Phoenix.I bet you wont be able to even touch those coats again, never mind sell them.

greenhill · 23/09/2012 21:36

zukiecat they can't be "horrible things" if they are made from beautiful animals. What a horrible waste of all those animals lives if it is merely binned. The fur was taken from farmed animals not wild ones. The animals would not have existed unless they were of use in the first place.

Fur is beautiful to touch (I have a cat on my lap) I would never buy fur, but I remember stroking fur coats in shops or on old ladies in church in the 70's and always respected the animal by thinking of its life and sad death.

Unlike a battery hen, these animals achieved a certain immortality, then were admired and coveted. Only in the last 30 years were these coats/ hats and scarves despised, mainly because of their link to animal cruelty but also because of disdain for the rich.

GoldShip · 23/09/2012 21:37

Green hill what a ridiculous post. Abs

GoldShip · 23/09/2012 21:39

'Disdain for the rich'. This is not an argument about class, do not turn it into one to belittle those that are against this.

Just because the animals were born to be made into fur does not condone it. And do you really think the animals give a toss about bein immortalised. I think they're more arsed about being skinned, lots of the times alive to save money.

GoldShip · 23/09/2012 21:40

And of course they can be horrible things. My nephen is a beautiful animal but a coat made with his skin would still be horrible.

greenhill · 23/09/2012 21:42

Can't I respect the animal that has already given it's life all those years ago?

I said I'd never buy fur. I like the feel of real fur on a real living creature. I would never want them to be sold again and hate what fur farming does. However most of the domesticated creatures that exist around the world exist for a purpose. If they weren't eaten or skinned they would not exist and it would be a very horrible planet if there were no animals on it.
