OK I have not name changed so please be kind.....OK, OK wrong place for that.

I'm 5.6 and 16 stone 4 at the moment. This is post having two children in the last 3 years. I used to hover near 13 stone....so heavy but not this heavy. I don't have any obvious health issues other than I get achy knees now.

I would have to go private. We are reasonably financially comfortable. I could get the cash together but it we would feel it.

I think my husband is going to be a very tough to persuade round. He is very kind and wonderful but thinks I should do this with exercise, diet and willpower. He's never had to diet in his life so he doesn't understand how hopeless I feel about this.

I have been dieting since I was 15 years old and it never really got me anywhere. I would go up and down and always end up around 13 stone. Now I just can't seem to make any headway with a diet at all. I'm tired all the time (baby) and comfort eat.

I don't believe in diets any more. But I don't want to be this way. I can't do the things I want to do: shop in normal shops, run for bus without hurting my knees, ski, feel like a normal person.

OK I'll stop. You get the idea.

Hiya

A few points to touch on. I was 16.5 stone 11 months ago and now 10.5.
If your throwing up you are eating to much or too large a bite.
If you are not able to swallow water this is also because you have eaten a large amount and it has become a little stuck.
It is not nice having to bring up your 'mistake' mouthfuls but you DO have to bring it back up. I usually have to lean forward and put my fingers down throat. Not glamorous.

I have to say though these side effects are when people eat too much too quickly. It's our own fault.

You get used to the band and take it for granted then end up in agony because of doing the wrong thing.

May I add 1 in 50 people normally experience slippage which is bad and not what you want.

I have had mine for 11 months and have lost 6.5 stone. I am very happy and would rather not have waited for the nhs!

I would recommend the band but be warned you must must must follow the rules or you risk throwing up and eventually slippage (if your not lucky)

Yes occasionally you need to go toilet to get rid of the food that's stuck but if you follow the rules, don't talk while you eat and just spit out any mouthfuls that feel like they are going to be too much to swallow (sometime a small mouthful can create lots of saliva while chewing and all in all you shouldn't swallow a large mouthful of anything even liquid)

So lastly Don't use hospital group!!!! Rubbish aftercare couldn't believe how bad they were. Go with an obesity surgery specialist don't be taken by the cheaper option please listen you won't regret it.

P's a band will change your life whether you keep it secret or not just do it. You deserve happiness!!

yummy this thread is years old and the OP might no longer be around. You'd really be better off starting a new thread for this and maybe not in AIBU

scribblescrabble · 20/02/2015 08:09

I am 9 years post Gastric band, up until 4 years ago I would have said go for it Grin, now, I would probably say dont bother.

I know this is a zombie thread but I'm sure its relevant for some still.

My close friend was planning surgery but decided a last ditch attempt at a vlcd. Her doctor was supportive and she did it for three months and decided that she was capable of losing weight, she just did not have the self belief before. She now uses the products on a fasting diet and is seven stones down in a year.

GrimDamnFanjo · 21/02/2015 16:20

I would try other options first before surgery. To be honest if it were me I would try and lose what is actually not a huge amount of weight naturally. I speak from having been 6-7 stones overweight. Try 5:2 which does educate you on how many calories you need to be healthy and look at hypnosis and hypnotic gastric bands such as the ones from from the excellent www.marisapeer.com

Hi I know this is an old thread but did you get it done?

MrsMarmite1234 · 03/02/2017 17:54

I'm the same height as you and joined SW mid July last year at 15.6. I've lost 3st 5.5lb since then without being really restrictive. Save your cash that you would've spent on surgery and go on holiday x

justilou · 04/02/2017 22:53

Honestly? No. I have researched this as was exceedingly overweight myself. Too many people with gastric bands have complications, and need it removed, repaired or replaced. It is also easy to eat around. I ended up having a vertical sleeve gastrectomy and have never looked back. Don't think for one second that it's easy. It's not. The changes to your diet and lifestyle must be permanent or you will end up either re-gaining weight or making yourself very ill. The diet beforehand was very tough. Afterwards was much worse. (And I had the op just before Christmas, too). Apart from that, I can honestly say that it was definitely the right choice for me and it has changed my life.

Cherrysoup · 04/02/2017 22:59

Why don't you read a book on nutrition? The basics are that you need to burn more calories than you consume. Exercise more and eat more healthily, that way you will lose some weight.

Are you absolutely shitting me? Possibly the most useless advice I've ever seen given to a person with weight issues.

Tons of research needed, obviously. A colleague has lost 2 stone since October having had a band fitted. I thought it would be quicker, but I think her eating habits are quite poor. I don't say anything, it's none of my damn business, but she still eats very high calorie foods every lunchtime.
