Have been reading the dailymail (okay I admit it) and just came across this article about the new iPhone. Can anyone explain the phenomenon of queuing for ages to be the first to get your hands on something? Are these ebay enthusiasts looking to make a profit? Or is it just the satisfaction of having the latest technology first? IS it fashionable?

My poor DP had to start work at 7.30am because of these stupid queues he don't finish until 9pm.

Icelollycraving · 21/09/2012 18:29

Let's face it though, most retailers would bloody love to have queues though so although I feel sorry that people have to work these hours (I'm in retail) the queues are what are helping retailers to keeping people in work.

Icelollycraving · 21/09/2012 18:30

Sorry for that v long sentence Blush

PeshwariNaan · 21/09/2012 18:44

I queue for ages to get cheese on Xmas Eve.... Blush

MrFlibble · 21/09/2012 18:48

I queued for the harry potter books! Grin

There was a thing on my yocal radio this morning where they went out "on da street" with an iphone 4 with a "free radio" phone cover on it to disguise the fact and asked people their opinions on the brand new iphone 5. Loads of people saying how much lighter it was and slimmer, the screen was bigger and it was loads faster, with prompting they were saying there was loads of difference between the one they were shown and an iphone4 when in actual fact they were exactly the same! Was rather amusing actually.

IKnowItsMyFaultBut · 21/09/2012 18:54

I don't normally say this - but those who do this are really quite sad.

You've got to hand it to apple though, their marketing is really spectacular.

charade · 21/09/2012 18:59

I queued for HP. There is something nice about being a human surrounded by other humans and all caught up in the hype and excitement.

IKnowItsMyFaultBut · 21/09/2012 19:09

Mass hysteria?

DilysPrice · 21/09/2012 19:21

What charade said. Wanting to say "I was there!" is illogical but fun, like queuing to catch a glimpse of the back of the Queen's head, or the Olympic torch or applaud Team GB on top of a coach or to see the new Lord of the Rings film at midnight on opening day.

Illogical but harmless - the new iPhone may not float your boat, but I'd feel sorry for someone who didn't feel that way about something.

People sometimes camp out for the new year sales (OK, there may be a big discount on some items), but it's pretty similar.

It may well be the case that with 'new' item hype, it's (mostly) younger people willing to spend time in the queue - whether the latest release of some game, phone or [OK, probably only for the HP series] book.

No, you won't find me there, but I'm sure at some time or other I'd be willing to spend time in a similar queue, to have a higher than average chance of getting something (probably far more likely if it was for a significant discount, than for a product which will be at the same price on the day as it would be ordered online and with just a few days delay).

Only a tiny part of me remembers seeing people trampled under foot in some 'new year sales' (or Black Friday sales, the day after Thanksgiving, in USA) and makes me glad I wasn't in that crowd!

Having seen an article suggesting Apple makes 400+ in profit for even the 16GB iPhone 5, it's no wonder the Apple Store staff can be cheering on the happy buyers and 'high fiving' them, probably thinking of their commission bonus!

I just think it's a bit sad that because of a few enthusiasts (and let's face it, many in the media are Apple users too), this one brand gets completely free publicity because of their ardent supporters going a bit further than most.

If there was an 'Android Outlet' (in case Apple sues over the word 'Store'!) I expect there would be a similar 'rush' but maybe 4 times as often (because of the various makers such as HTC, Sony, and Samsung, for phones, there'd be plenty more 'new model' days), and make the trend less newsworthy.

They are losers. More money than sense.

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 22/09/2012 15:57

I refuse to stand in a queue that has more than 3 people in it!

Yup, me too. The stuff gets put down and I go elsewhere. Usually online.

DP gets huffy with me but I really can't be arsed to stand around waiting.

TequilaMockinBird · 22/09/2012 15:58

I queued outside Toys R Us in (I think) 1998. It was just before Christmas and DD was mad on Teletubbies. I managed to get a talking Po after queuing for hours!

But I was young then, and had more patience Grin

valiumredhead · 22/09/2012 17:37

The only time I ever queued was for a set of Teletubbies Grin

Lueji · 22/09/2012 18:06

Apart from the usual bus, check in, check out, post office queues, I have queued to: get DS the best swimming class time, my own uni lab class timetable.
And I never bothered to camp out.

I think apple probably feed these queues for hype.

MummytoKatie · 23/09/2012 00:12

I queued for the seventh HP. We got it from a supermarket and it was pre-dd so I got to spend 40 minutes discussing the books with other people who actually cared as much as I did whilst dh did the weekly shop.

detectivebeaver · 23/09/2012 08:51

Didn't someone camp out for a week? I would fee really daft doing that as well as feeling like a tramp!! I certainly wouldn't take a weeks annual leave for that.

NiniLegsInTheAir · 23/09/2012 09:46

I feel the same way about people who queue outside Next stores on sale days. WHY???

SomersetONeil · 23/09/2012 09:55

YANBU. The day I find myself queuing outside a shop is the day I pack my bags and de-camp, quantumly, to Cold War USSR.

Binkybix · 23/09/2012 12:09

I agree, why queue when you can pre-order? But if someone does want to queue it doesn't bother me.

freddiefrog · 23/09/2012 12:38

I pre-ordered mine, no queuing required!

My upgrade was due so why not?

My friend queues from around 4am for the Next sale, that is mad
