Home insurance was due 13th August, but we forgot, so on 30th August got a reminder. Fine. On my next day off (admittedly almost a week later, but the best I could do with baby and work commitments), went to the post office, which is one of their suggested methods of payment. Paid in full. Figured it would be quicker than posting a cheque. Today get a letter saying my cover has been cancelled with effect from the 13th August for non-payment. Apparently the post office payment took 10 days to go through and now it is too late to renew. But nowhere on the reminder are there any details of at what date the policy will be cancelled, or any information on what payment is best. I may be stupid, but I thought post office would be instant. The money went out of my bank instantly. It will now take them 14 days to send me a cheque, during which time they have a years payment for house insurance sitting in their bank. Wankers, is what I think. What does anyone else think? Am considering moaning officiallgy to someone, but giving myself cooling off time first.

They're not psychic - how would they know you'd paid at the post office. I think YABVU.

Why didn't you phone them and pay over the phone? Quicker than waiting for a day off to go to the post office.

MabelLucyAttwell · 21/09/2012 09:02

You cannot complain. Your policy expired on 13 August. End of. Any renewal should have been made clear by you before that date.

Didn't you receive a renewal notice somewhere around the beginning of August?

sugarice · 21/09/2012 09:02

So are you currently covered or not by More Than in case of a claim?

Nigglenaggle · 21/09/2012 09:04

Not I guess, but we dont have a claim to make so not an issue.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 21/09/2012 09:05

YABVU - you didn't renew in time. You should have rung them the day you got the reminder to make sure, your fault not theirs!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 21/09/2012 09:05

Sorry but you are being totally unreasonable. If you insurance was due to expire on 13th Aug you would have had a reminder well before this date. So, your policy had been run out almost a month before you made payment.

They are not physic.....they probably thought you had gone elsewhere. Dont complain, they will laugh you off the phone.

Nigglenaggle · 21/09/2012 09:06

Not an option to pay over the phone, otherwise my method of choice

Nigglenaggle · 21/09/2012 09:07

No prev reminder I am aware of

Pfft however, prepared to take this one on the chin. Will take a deep breath. But still go elsewhere

I had an issue with my car insurance (I forgot, which I blamed on preg head). Bought new insurance over the phone on the day the old policy expired and was covered instantly (phew!)

So I agree with folks saying it would have been better to call them to pay. Oh well, you know for next time. Important thing now is to get cover, I'd have thought. Oh and IME renewing rather than shopping around and taking out a new policy is more expensive. HTH.

Happybunny12 · 21/09/2012 09:11

Sorry, cross post about paying over the phone.

MrSunshine · 21/09/2012 09:36

They gave you almost a month to sort it, which you didn't. Your fault, not theirs.

Nigglenaggle · 21/09/2012 09:49

Have been their customer for five years and this is the first year there has been a problem with payment. Loyalty is not rewarded, so why bother. Learnt. Dont believe in shopping around, but will.

Hmm
Kayano · 21/09/2012 10:22

Your fault

Kayano · 21/09/2012 10:22

You don't believe is shopping around?!?!

Wtaf?

CwtchesAndCuddles · 21/09/2012 11:20

You don't believe in shopping around - must be nice to have money to throw away. I've just renewed my house and car insurance this month and by shopping around saved myself £250

Nigglenaggle · 21/09/2012 12:17

What I mean is, I believe in rewarding good customer service with loyalty, and vice versa. To some extent you get what you pay for, but not to the extent that you should.

Either way, feel better for the vent even if you lot dont agree with me :) Home insurance now sorted with someone else. Was cheaper. Hope that doesnt mean its shite, but at least have some. Time to go about my day :)

differentnameforthis · 21/09/2012 12:43

How can they reward your loyalty if you don't communicate with them? At the very least I would have contacted them to inform them that I had made a payment & could they make a note on their records. That way, they may have put an extension on your account to give a few days grace. Like a previous poster said, they probably thought you have gone elsewhere, they did contact you & you did not respond.

Post office payments have never been immediate. The post office still needs to inform the company of your payment. Most place have the facility to pay online, with your credit card or via bank transfer. This normally takes 3/5 days.

MrSunshine · 21/09/2012 12:44

They gave you an extra month even though you didn't bother your arse to pay for your insurance. I think they were exceedingly good to you.
