To wonder why ppl would bother to hang out washing and then leave it for THREE months???!

is it just me, or am I being unreasonable to wonder why people (more than one person!) would bother to hang out washing on the line, and then leave it there for more than THREE months?! Over the summer, I'm sure it's been totally dry dozens of times - yet never removed. I've seen others leave laundry for a couple of weeks in the past (which I thought was a bit lazy) but a few months?! Crazy, IMO!

:o bet you could have grated cheese with it when you brough it in usual!

sashh · 21/09/2012 05:20

My ex housemate left a single sock on the whirly gig thing for months. I'd occasionally ask him if he was going to bring the sock in. It was there from about September to the following Spring.

It went from black to grey, was snowed on, became part of a spider's nest.

He tried to claim it was some sort of installation art.

HenriettaChicken · 21/09/2012 05:38

I left washing out overnight at my old house. Someone stole DH's underwear but left everything of mine. Hmm

I'm not sure which one of us was more put out!

MammaTJisWearingGold · 21/09/2012 06:24

Go and knock on their door and ask them! Go on, that is your mission for today. MammaTJ MN needs to know!!

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 21/09/2012 06:50

There's been a grown up size Womble outfit on the line for about 4 weeks chez everlong.

It's Ds' from when he went to Leeds festival.

Scares me every time I go out in the garden.

gimmecakeandcandy · 21/09/2012 07:01

Weird weird weird! Why would anyone do that! Scutty and scummy thing to do and just...weird!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/09/2012 07:16

Are they elderly? Maybe they put it out and in the meantime have had a fall or had to go into hospital? or they're dead

I had a throw out for several weeks and after reading about sun bleaching just now on here that was most definitely what I was doing.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/09/2012 07:18

gimme it's not that weird... The person's either ill or lazy. Wouldnt class it as weird weird weird!

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 21/09/2012 07:29

MN is weird. I remember another thread like this and the poster got loads of posts telling her to keep her nose out etc etc and now everyone is agreeing that leaving washing out for ages is weird Confused

gallifrey · 21/09/2012 09:14

I went on holiday and my friend was staying at my house and looking after the dogs for me. I had left some stuff on the line as it wasn't quite dry by the time we left and when we came back after a week it was all still on there!!
Was IBU to expect her to bring it in?

Mrsjay · 21/09/2012 09:31

its swings and roundabout with opinions on here Grin

McHappyPants2012 · 21/09/2012 09:48

never gets why people hang washing out.

qo · 21/09/2012 09:54

I left a pair of jeans out on the line once over the whole winter.

To be fair they had bunched right up to the end of the line and they weren't mine either so I didn't miss them

BrainzYum · 21/09/2012 10:35

  1. They hung it out, then died.

  2. They hung it out, then their leg fell off.

  3. The children are using it as a play den.

  4. It is just to wind up the nosy judgemental neighbours.

  5. One member of the household hung the washing out and asked a second member to bring it in. Second member refused and the washing is now symptomatic of a domestic power struggle.

  6. They are lazy slatterns.

  7. They are barking mad.

  8. They are a mumsnetter and are waiting to see how long it takes for their washing to make it into AIBU.

  9. They did all the washing in preparation to move out, then forgot to take it with them.

  10. They are supergrasses/ international spies/ Nazi war criminals / convicted peeeedos living under an assumed identity and had to move quickly before they were caught be Crusher Bob / the KGB / Simon Wiesenthal / an angry mob and didn't have time to take their washing with them.

See, lots of reasons Smile

KentuckyFriedChildren · 21/09/2012 11:02

My neighbour's washing has been on the line for about a year now. She is definitely a lazy cow she has to walk past it every day to get to her car. It will probably still be there in another year too!

Zalen · 21/09/2012 12:01

OMG, ds1 remembers the womble suit from Leeds Fest. I just texted to ask him about it, Yes I AM that sad!!

JustAnotherOldie · 21/09/2012 12:01

LOL - yep, lots of possible reasons! And yeah, I know I should mind my own business! Wink I'm just curious and can't imagine why anyone would do it! and thought MN might know! haha

But certainly not a dead person, nor are they ill, nor elderly!

And what is even more odd....more than one household's washing line was left - at the same time, and still there! Maybe they're trying to see who can leave it the longest?? Wink

I'd never qualify as a domestic goddess but for sure, unless I'd died shortly after hanging the washing out, I can't see any justification for leaving it there for 3 months. It is going to smell awful, almost certainly get shat on by birds and also need re-washing. Also, who has so many clothes/towels/sheets that they can leave it hanging out ad infinitum?

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 21/09/2012 12:10

Really zalen Grin that was my boy!

Better bring it in off the line Blush

CassandraApprentice · 21/09/2012 12:20

Heavy throw DC were sick on with very nasty bug it had water with bleach thrown at it and was left out several months.

Too bulky for our washing machine, don't drive so it got left out for cold to kill any contamination and till I had time and energy to deal with by getting it to laundrette.

I can't quite believe more than one family regularly does this. We've been know to go nearly a week with several small DC and other stuff going on.

I do judge the nasty neighbor 50 good health who doesn't work or do much at all apparently who on occasions leave her washing out for nearly a week. Even if she was to ill or busy to get it in there are several other able body adults living there who could get it in.

soorploom · 21/09/2012 13:35

but what about bird poo surely after all that time geeeegs......

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 13:46

lol at the towel for the whole winter. Grin

I have left laundry for a few days when it has been rained on, them semi dried before it pissed down again.

I used to just leave it but now rewash it (because it seems to stink). I don't know why.

I often put washing out last thing at night, and get it in the next day. I know my MIL (much loved) thinks this is slatternly but is far too nice to say so, but her face was a picture when I hung out some sheets in the summer at 8pm.
