WIBU to lie about the cat?

Background - I live in a small street of 12 houses, we all know each other and get along. One of the houses is rented out, it belongs to the mum of one of the neighbours. Earlier in the year, there was a woman living there, she had a smallyappertype dog and then got a kitten. She didn't really socialise or speak to the rest of us.

One day she just left. Moved out, didn't give noticed, left owing rent. Also left the kitten behind (it was about 6 or 7 months by this time). I absolutely fucking loathe people who do this to animals. Luckily for the kitten a few of us are cat owners and lovers and after a brief conflab, decided that one of us would try to take it in to our cat folds. My older girl cat hated him, so he ended up with another neighbour who has adopted him, fed him, loved him, flead and wormed him (he was riddled), paid for him to be neutered and have a full course of vaxes, and turned him from a skittish human-hater into a sweet, friendly and happy cat.

I came home from the school run today to find a woman loitering about on the street who claimed to be previous neighbour's daughter in law, looking for this cat because her child wanted it back. Bearing in mind, it was March/April when the cat was dumped. I told her we hadn't seen it since the spring and it had probably been killed by foxes or run over since it was so little when it was left. She said, "Oh well, I didn't really want it anyway but she'd started going on about it". Oh right, had she, six months after everyone fucked off and left it behind to live on hope and fresh air!

Luckily he had the common sense to be hiding in my back garden at the time of the encounter so as not to give me away, bless him.

Was I right or wrong?

YWNBU. People who abandon animals don't deserve to have pets in the first place. Glad the kitty is being well looked after now.

Devora · 20/09/2012 16:06

Right

OldGreyWiffleTest · 20/09/2012 16:07

You were so very right. Horrible woman to leave a kitten like that.

Ebb · 20/09/2012 16:07

Yanbu! Some people shouldn't be allowed pets.

WorraLiberty · 20/09/2012 16:08

I genuinely can't see anyone saying you were wrong

CremeEggThief · 20/09/2012 16:08

IMO, YANBU. Sometimes honesty is not the best policy.

BananaBubbles · 20/09/2012 16:09

YADNBU.I'd have done the same.

albertswearengen · 20/09/2012 16:10

So, so right.

Right, and I'd have asked for her forwarding address for the RSPCA too!

Tiago · 20/09/2012 16:11

So very very very right. They abandoned the cat and it would be dead if not for you all.

SoleSource · 20/09/2012 16:22

Yabu

WorraLiberty · 20/09/2012 16:23

Sole Grin Grin

SoleSource · 20/09/2012 16:30

Yanbu of course! Welsh. Lucky cat :)

aldiwhore · 20/09/2012 16:31

YANBU, well maybe a bit, YABU for not telling her that as the cat had been abandoned you were left with thedecision of whether to report her to the RSPCA for being a cunt or adopting the cat, which a neighboujr has done are the cat is fine, and if she even considers trying to get the cat back you'll name and shame her in the newspaper as a mad bad cat abandoner.

Then pivot, and flounce off declaring to the whole street that 'that woman who left her cat for dead' is back.

Other than that, YANBU.

WelshMaenad · 20/09/2012 16:36

I should probably clarify that this dil and the GD didn't live with Runaway Sally. So there might be a poor child lost her cat element, but why not come looking straight away if you care so much??

Aldiwhore, I did want to have a bit of a chops at her but didn't want to raise suspicions that I cared a bit too much about this car and risk her coming back to keep looking IYSWIM. hopefully we won't see them again and Puff the cat is safe!

Hide the cat if they come round again. YANBU. At least the poor thing is being loved and looked after now.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/09/2012 16:52

Sole! You scared me then.

lljkk · 20/09/2012 16:52

Blimey, can't believe you felt need to ask.

NervousAt20 · 20/09/2012 16:52

YADNBU

Jazzies · 20/09/2012 17:01

You did the right thing. Sadly she will probably just go out and replace it with another kitten who will be dumped a forgotten in a few months time.

GlitterySkulls · 20/09/2012 18:25

yabu for fibbing- you should have told her straight, "your mil abandoned the poor wee thing, someone else has taken it on. tell your mil she's a scumbag & get to fuck".

however, if you're not the confrontational type, your way was probably best.

gothicangel · 20/09/2012 18:32

YANBU

horrid people to do that to a cat :(

GalaxyDefender · 20/09/2012 18:35

YANBU at all! People who abandon cats are utterly heartless. I could never do something like that, I have a kitten about the same age and she's so helpless and adorable. How could someone ignore those little "mew" noises? Sad

Same thing essentially happened to my mum, people across the road bought a kitten, but made it stay outside all the time and rarely refilled its food bowl. Unsurprisingly, she looked elsewhere for sustenance and came across my cat mad family, who took her in. Kitten was originally returned when they came looking, but two months later they moved away and just left her Angry

She now lives with my mum and is immensely fat because everyone spoils her Grin Good on you for protecting that little cat, he deserves to be in a home where he is 100% wanted and loved.
