To call in sick?

I have cystitis. Awful, awful cystitis. I have had it on and off for a month and am now on my third different type of antibiotic to try to get rid of it.

Today is my second day back in a job I have been doing for two years (term time only) and I have had to call in sick. My boss is obviously heavily pissed off and has made that quite clear. I am a really conscientious person and feel guilty taking time off even when I am ill. So now I am in the stupid position of feeling utterly grim with cystitis AND feeling guilty and worried about facing my boss's wrath when I get back in to work.

If I could have gone in I would have. It is office based so not physically demanding, but I literally cannot be off the loo for more than five mins and feel like a sack of cold shite.

Can you please tell me AIBU? Thanks :-)

Call in and let him know if he needs a doctor's note you can supply one.

MelodyPondering · 20/09/2012 08:41

YANBU! And I really don't think you should have to put up with being made to feel guilty as well as ill.

It sucks, but sometimes people are too ill to go to work. Managers getting shitty won't stop that!

Get well soon Smile

MammaTJisWearingGold · 20/09/2012 08:43

YANBU to not go in to work, YABU to feel guilty about it.

TheDetective · 20/09/2012 08:46

Not unreasonable in the slightest. Had too many bouts of cystitis from age 14-25 to count. Now fixed (thank you urethral dilatation!) but the misery that it caused me over the years means you have my deepest sympathy. It's a fucking bitch of a thing. And it affects people in different ways. Some people can work/cope with them. Sometimes I could.... Mostly I couldn't. Symptoms and duration vary from person to person and from one attack to another!

Cystitis is foul and YADNBU to phone in sick. I felt sick and shivery and cold and yes, needed to be on the toilet all bloody day. I would get a Drs note and try not to let your shitty boss get you down. I was always told to try and keep warm; so get your duvet and drink many cups of hot cranberry juice, hope you feel better soon.

WillNeverGetALicence · 20/09/2012 09:28

I think that's really horrible when you are unwell and management makes you feel like crap for calling in sick.

I second the calling back and offering a Drs note. Hopefully manager will say not to worry but may make him/her realise you truly are unwell and that they are being very unreasonable and inappropriate in letting their bad mood out on you.

Poor you. Cystitis is awful and no way you can work effectively in that condition.

Get better soon. Oh, and if your manager gives you any more grief I would contact HR or your union for some advice. Really not on in my book.

BupcakesandCunting · 20/09/2012 09:39

Your boss can be pissed off all they like. He/she can't penalise you for being ill.

Stay at home and fuck what your boss thinks! Get well soon Thanks

Kalisi · 20/09/2012 09:57

Just go in to detail about your Cystitis when you go back. Will soon shut him up.

MyLastDuchess · 20/09/2012 09:59

YANBU. I'm lucky that I don't seem to have much of a problem with cystitis these days, but the worst case I had in the past led to a kidney infection and me collapsing in the street. It's not something to mess around with. SO sorry if it's not convenient for your boss! Angry

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 20/09/2012 10:02

I HATE bosses who let ill people know they are pissed off. It is MASSIVELY unprofessional.

IGNORE them. YOU are ill! If he or she doesn't understand what that is, supply a note from GP.

Get well soon.

SirGOLDBoobs · 20/09/2012 10:04

How unprofessional of your boss. You're ill, there's nothing you can do. Cystitis is horrible, I hope you feel better soon.
