To ask DS's teacher this.

DS is in year 1 and has Autism.

This year they have a book of the week. DS struggles with it sometimes. He can become disruptive when upset and this obviously effects his and all the other childrens learning.

I want to ask the teacher if she can give me a list of the books she is planning on reading so that I can pre buy them and help DS become familiar with them. He has a bed time story every night and we can look at them then.

Is this asking too much of the teacher?

Of course not, it's a great idea. Smile

NoToastWithoutKnickers · 18/09/2012 20:22

Not at all. Does he have any 1:1 time with a TA? When I've worked with deaf children we've often done the same thing in school so they're up to speed before we read the book as a class.

MidoriKobayashi · 18/09/2012 20:23

I don't think that's unreasonable at all, I'm a teacher and if your son was in my class I'd be really pleased that you'd take the time and effort to do this!

ImaginateMum · 18/09/2012 20:23

Very reasonable and a good idea.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 18/09/2012 20:24

YANBU. Excellent idea.

WofflingOn · 18/09/2012 20:26

Excellent idea, even if she gives you a note the week before if she can't predict the term.

Seconded.

lovebunny · 18/09/2012 20:28

brilliant idea. and ask for time to meet, say termly, so that she can give you a general idea of what is coming up. it makes your life, her life, and you son's life easier, so i'd think she'd be in favour.

If it's a book of the week, it is often the teacher's own copy that they plan work and activities around.

Sirzy · 18/09/2012 20:48

Great idea, I would ask if you could borrow the book from the school the weekend before to read if they have enough copies to do this with.

Otherwise I would look at amazon market place to buy them as you can often get books for a few pence

cansu · 18/09/2012 20:53

I think it's a good idea though she might not have a list yet, but this will prompt her to get organised. Im sure she will be happy to help with this.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 18/09/2012 20:55

Nope, it's a great idea. It's called pre-learning and is a recognised way of helping children with conditions like autism.

TroublesomeEx · 18/09/2012 21:22

Yep great idea.

She might not have all the titles now but any notice will be great.

sparklekitty · 18/09/2012 21:31

Can I say as a Y1 teacher (who has taught quite a few children with ASD) I wish more parents were like you! Its a great idea. Hellhasnofury is right, it's pre-teaching and should be done as good practice with ASD children, you will be really helping her and your DS. Go for it :)

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 18/09/2012 21:35

I'm sure the teacher will be pleased to help. If they do book of the week, she should be able to give you notice. She might even be able to lend you the actual books.

You could also give her a list of all the titles your ds is familiar with from home, especially if they are some of the well known ones. That way she can use it for impromptu story times or if he needs quiet story time.

Kennyp · 18/09/2012 21:37

Love that idea, am going to recommend to the teachers i work with.
