To have just called duty social worker and police emergency

I was driving to my local supermarket an hour ago to see a 3-ish year old boy stood in the busy street just in a tee and shorts, no socks or shoes. It is raining really bad here today (actually its Manchester so it is always raining). The cars were just moving round him.
At first I drove past him (on the other carriageway) as it took a few seconds for it to sink into my brain what I had just seen. I immediately turned my car around and drove back to find him on the pavement.
I phoned the emergency SS who told me to ring 999. While I was on the phone to the police he ran into a house. Mum then came to the doorway and then walked off again STILL leaving the door and the garden gate wide open.
Am I just a meddling busybody? Do you think the police will go round there? I am shocked at what I have seen.

Yanbu. I would have done the same.

WorraLiberty · 18/09/2012 18:48

Was he actually stood in the middle of the road?

YANBU to be concerned, he should at least be dressed and supervised so he stays on the pavement.

lunar1 · 18/09/2012 18:49

You did the right thing, well done for acting so quickly. What sometimes seems to be obviously the right thing to do is often missed in the heat of the moment.

Poor little boy, hope he is ok

mrsrosieb · 18/09/2012 18:49

He was stood about one metre from the pavement.

Shame on the other motorists just driving round him!

yanbu

CaliforniaLeaving · 18/09/2012 20:01

I hope they do go to the house and see what's going on. Did you give them the address of the house he went into?

mrsrosieb · 18/09/2012 20:06

The police just called. They went round to the house. There was a woman there who matched my description. She said she had grand kids but they did not visit until 6 (I phoned at 5) and they have gone home. She said none of her grand kids were wearing shorts and has no recollection of the incident!

I saw her at the doorway as the little boy ran inside.

There is something fishy here. Does anyone have any theories as to wtf is going on?

(I did double check the address at the time so there is NO way I have got the house wrong).

Thankfully the officer said he believed me and thinks she is just denying it to get out of trouble.

YANBU. There was that awful case of two young children getting disorientated playing in woods and ending up on the motorway by Runcorn. They tried to cross the motorway and were both tragically hit.

BlackTieNTails · 18/09/2012 20:53

its a ghost!

TheCalmingManatee · 18/09/2012 20:54

Black tie Grin

cansu · 18/09/2012 20:57

I suppose it is possible he slipped out and you happened to come across him at that moment. However if she didn't dash out and anxiously scoop him up I think you did the right thing. it is strange that she wouldn't admit to it and tbh this is the most worrying part of it. I am guessing he was just in sorts and t shirt because he was meant to be inside but wandered outside undetected.

TroublesomeEx · 18/09/2012 21:19

Yes I have a theory. She got busted and so lied to the police. Hmm

You did the right thing and hopefully she'll think twice in future before leaving the door open and letting the children run out into the busy street.

mrsrosieb · 18/09/2012 21:32

The thing is the copper did not see this little boy at the property-just plain weird.

Perhaps Black is right and instead of the law I should have phoned Derek Acorah!

There was a taxi driver in my town who saw two children in the middle of town at 3.00am....he stopped his cab and they slipped away...he immediately rang the police who scoured the area and no sign was found...no DC reported missing.

He said they were small...around 5 or 6...in nightwear.

What happened there then? It was a part of town that's all shops...no houses...if I were you OP I would spy on that house.

ScarletLady02 · 18/09/2012 22:21

You did the right thing. I'd never be able to forgive myself if I'd have ignored something like that and then something terrible happened.

BegoniaBampot · 18/09/2012 22:27

I don't think I could ever ignore a child in those kind of circumstances. I'm the nosy bitch that approaches lost looking children. Remember the 2 boys killed on the motorway. Was one of the most shocking, tragic stories I've ever read and I still think of them and the poor motorists who did try and help but couldn't in time.
