MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea 'I even separate my coloureds.
Reds and blues.'

And black. And others if there's enough.

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 18/09/2012 14:05

I don't separate.

I wash dark items with other darks when they're new, but after a few washes I assume no more dye will come out and bung everything together. None of us really wear white though, apart from some of my underwear; maybe if I was washing school uniforms or work shirts I'd be more cautious.

HerbWoman · 18/09/2012 14:26

But what do you do with clothes that are white AND coloured on the same item? DH has stopped buying red and white t-shirts now the ones he has got are red and pink.

WinklyFriedChicken · 18/09/2012 14:28

I wash my white & colours in their own wash with vanish oxy action crystal white , seems to keep the white part nice and bright.

Tee2072 · 18/09/2012 14:29

I separate white and colour for mine and my husband's, but don't bother for our son's as he has almost nothing that is white.

He's 3. White would be silly. And dirty!

(except that he starts pre-school on Monday and his uniform includes a white polo...)

ZillionChocolate · 18/09/2012 14:42

Like Winkly I do a separate "white and...." wash. It'd be helpful if the labels told you what similar colours were rather than having to leave it to your own judgement!

juedanlil · 18/09/2012 14:45

Lol , Defo wash pants and socks on their own !!! :-)

StanleyLambchop · 18/09/2012 14:46

I bung all mine in together, sometimes I use a colour catcher, sometimes not. But then again my pants are all grey.........

Proudnscary · 18/09/2012 14:51

Life is too short to do washing - that is what my dh is for separate colours

Life is way too short to dicuss washing in this much detail - just stop it all of you NOW

StormGlass · 18/09/2012 14:53

Depends how you feel about your white clothes turning other colours.

It's not quite so bad if a formerly white item ends up with a pink/blue/green/whatever tinge all over, but I've had a few items that went blotchy. We have a few mostly white things with a blue splodge or line stained into them after a mixed wash.

Pandemoniaa · 18/09/2012 14:56

I separate whites for the simple reason that I stick one of those whitener thingies in the machine - what we can do with white clothes in this house has to be seen to be believed!

Beyond that, everything gets washed according to type rather than colour. So I sort into towels, sheets, underwear etc.

I do have a friend who is so bonkers rigid about colour separation that she'll separate peach coloured clothes from pink ones. But then I suspect she has too much time to fill.

BedHog · 18/09/2012 14:58

I don't have any whites. I do my stuff in one load, DCs in another and towels/bedding in a third, slightly hotter, wash. DP does his own washing, and the iron hasn't been used for about 10 years!!

NumericalMum · 18/09/2012 16:08

How many loads do you all do? I wash for 3 adults and a child and only do 3, max 4 loads a week. Delicates, whites(including lights), bedding and colours Confused

JarethTheGoblinKing · 18/09/2012 20:51

Does all your bedding fit in one wash? Confused, do you have a massive machine?

We do about 8 I think, a load most days of just clothes, another of bedding and another towels.

jadebond007 · 18/09/2012 21:08

Handwash the red trousers in lukewarm water!

You only need to do it the first few times until they stop leaking excess dye

jadebond007 · 18/09/2012 21:10

And hell yes I separate. I didn't buy clothes to trash them in a maverick washing scheme

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 18/09/2012 21:13

My bedding fits in 1 wash. It's 2 singles and a king size. It won't all fit in when dc3 comes.
And my machine isn't huge but I probably overfill it tbh

BrandyAlexander · 18/09/2012 21:15

Always separate! I do whites, reds/pinks, blues, other coloureds, beige towels, dark towels, bedding from our bed. Oh plus one for bath mats, and errm slippers Blush.

picnicbasketcase · 18/09/2012 21:17

I don't separate any washing. If it needs washing, it gets chucked in. And it's not all discoloured and skanky, it all comes out fine. You're all tools of the washing powder, Vanish, fabric softener and electricity marketing boards. Probably.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 18/09/2012 21:29

We have a large 7kg machine and can only fit one set of bedding in at a time.. any more and its too full.
