He is miserable, grumpy. He leads Jane on, puts her in danger, makes Blanche think he's going to propose to he. Cross dresses. Is a bigamist, imprisons his wife in the attic and an all round cad and bounder.

I'm currently reading Villette Mrs Bovary and finding it very hard going!

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:41

HOW DARE YOU.

THINK OF HIS LEG.

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:41

Villette is unspeakable, poor Charlotte's unrequited passion for her Belgian teacher.

squoosh · 18/09/2012 14:43

I stopped reading Vilette after about 100 pages.

Sorry Charl!

MissMogwi · 18/09/2012 14:46

I'm reading it in preparation for my dissertation. Normally I devour books but I am not enjoying this one at all.

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:47

Shirley's better

babyfirefly1980 · 18/09/2012 14:47

I agree about Heathcliff...people who hold him up as a romantic idol worry me a bit aswell.

Kayano · 18/09/2012 14:49

Why is St. John pronounced Sinjin? Just wondering

BalloonSlayer · 18/09/2012 14:50

I love the book but don't like Mr Rochester very much. However he is so clearly Charlotte Bronte's fantasy man, it's all rather endearing.

Didn't like Shirley at all. Shirley talks to whatsername, is it Caroline? exactly the same way that Rochester speaks to Jane.

MissMogwi · 18/09/2012 14:50

I've wondered that too Kayano. I think it's to make it even more posh. Grin

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:51

Because it's Singent John, not Saint.

Kayano · 18/09/2012 14:51

Is it really?

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:52

Yes!

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:53

Singent is an old name that came over in the Norman Conq.

squoosh · 18/09/2012 14:53

Because posh people are too lazy to say Saint John and can only mumble Sn'Jn as in 'I appear to have consumed too much port madam, and now feel bold enough to tell you that your ample bosoms are displayed to marvellous effect in that gown, don't you think so Sn'Jn. Hic'

[mindblown]

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:56

Oh do MissM, I love talking about the Brontes Grin

Kayano · 18/09/2012 14:57

Hilly what is your favourite book?

Kayano · 18/09/2012 14:57

Hully* honestly that was autocorrect lol

MrsBovary · 18/09/2012 14:57

Villette is hard going.

It's a name used for expressing devotion to St John, apparently. 'Sinjen' is just the pronunciation.

x-posted Grin

sleepyhead · 18/09/2012 14:57

Nooooo!

He does explain about how he was duped into marrying Bertha (if of course you believe him). He says they were prevented from being alone together and didn't get to know each other until after the wedding. He was young, greedy (thought she had money) and she was v beautiful. Her madness also didn't manifest itself until after they were married.

I've always assumed that it was something like Huntingdon's since it was hereditary and manifested itself in adulthood.

Anyway, I think he's pretty open about being a complete bastard and trying to redeem himself by (a) not putting Bertha into an asylum, (b) taking in Adele when she wasn't his daughter.

squoosh · 18/09/2012 14:58

Duped shmuped.

Does Rochester seem like the kind of weak kneed willy who could be duped? I did like his taking in of Adele though.

Hullygully · 18/09/2012 14:59

Kayano - ever? Or of the Brontes?

Kayano · 18/09/2012 15:00

Go on the Grin
