to not want family member to leave buggy outside their house?

It cost a small fortune!

I'm not sure what stats are on buggy robberies lately Grin but I just don't want anyone to take it as I couldnt afford to replace it and neither could they.

AIBU and precious? Or is it a valid request to bring it into the house when it's not being used?

Round here it would be gone in minutes, nobody leaves them outside ever. It just wouldn't occur to people to do it. Even an old tatty cheap one would be fair game and be gone, let alone an expensive one. YANBU at all!

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2012 10:29

People do steal buggies and prams from outside houses YANBU.

Longtalljosie · 18/09/2012 10:33

We've just had an email from neighbourhood watch telling us buggy robberies are on the up and not to do this...

Jenny70 · 18/09/2012 11:41

I agree that they should bring it in, especially if you've asked them to.

Why won't they?

Is it steps, dirty wheels on carpet, too big to fit in doorway easily?

Perhaps if you know why they aren't, then you can take steps to help - if it is steps, is it easier to fold then bring it in, or separate parts (especially nappy bag etc which can weigh a tonne!).

If it's the wheel being dirty, buy a cheap matt, carpet offcut to roll it onto - the carpet/mat can be rolled up when not needed.

If it won't fit through door easily, can it be folded easily?

If it's them not being bothered to do it, ask them to leave their wallet on top with a note to take the wallet, not the buggy thanks! It will be a major pain if it does go missing, and cause strain when you've asked them not to.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 18/09/2012 11:45

YANBU. I would love to leave my buggy outside as I have nowhere to store it in the house (except for the middle of the living room) but it would be gone sharpish without a lockable porch.

A little incOnvience is much better than a nicked buggy!

Goldenjubilee10 · 18/09/2012 11:47

Have you mentioned it to them. It would never occur to me not to leave it out. Ds3's bike, scooter and kettle cart spend most of their time sitting outside the house.

InTheNightGarden · 18/09/2012 11:48

I didnt realise people took buggies :-/

I have always left mine out side during the day as I often take my 16month old to the park or duck pond :-/ ... it's been fine for 16months.... opps! maybe I'll rethink, or is this just certain areas?

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2012 11:49

Not long ago there was someone on here that had theirs stolen. It was a v expensive silver cross I think. If they can't go inside I would be locking it to something with a bicycle lock.

quoteunquote · 18/09/2012 11:56

Depends where you live really, we haven't locked our house or car doors for years, we can leave anything outside and it won't get stolen,

I don't think we ever bought a buggy into the house.

Hopefully they have house insurance so if it does get stolen they will be able to replace it, maybe they think the very small chance of it been stolen and claiming on the insurance is less hassle than having to heave a buggy into the house several times a day, unless you have a very large house a buggy is always going to get in the way.

fatlazymummy · 18/09/2012 13:25

I always used to leave my buggy outside my house, it used to be traditional round my way. I did have one nicked a few years ago though.
I would be surprised if an insurance company would pay out for it though. They refused to pay for my son's bike when it was taken from our property [my front lawn]. I was informewd that they only paid out if it was stolen from inside the house or a locked garage.
Personally I would look for a cheapie [charity shops eg.] just for use at that person's house.

amistillsexy · 18/09/2012 13:26

I used to use a bike lock and just lock it to the downpipe. Mine never got stolen, though others' did.

cat · 18/09/2012 13:27

Our doctors surgery has buggy locks after a spate of thefts

MrDobalina · 18/09/2012 13:29

have a similar dilemma--watching your thread

I asked though...you should definitely say you want them to keep it inside. Not just to prevent it getting stolen, but being left out in the elements will take its toll-degrade fabric etc

Bongaloo · 18/09/2012 13:50

Can they not just use a bike lock?

lljkk · 18/09/2012 13:55

Rain & weather not good for buggy, either.

Get one of these. Won't stop a determined thief but will prevent casual impulse thief.

TheCraicDealer · 18/09/2012 13:59

Mhmm, well the L&G home insurance policy I have in front of me (as an example) states that cover only applies to a "loss or damage to contents outside the home but within the boundaries of the land belonging to your home". So if it's in a garden it would be grand, but if it's a house that fronts directly onto the pavement you're in the shit. And then there's the excess to consider, you'd still be out money even if cover did apply. Just tell them to catch themselves on.

StateofConfusion · 18/09/2012 14:13

No way would I leave my buggy outside anywhere, even the naicest areas get opportunists!

2rebecca · 18/09/2012 14:29

If it's their buggy they can do what they like with it. If it's your buggy then don't give them it, keep it under your control. My buggy was rarely at relatives' houses unless one of us was also there. You don't trust them so why are they having anything to do with your buggy or child?

JeremyKylesPetProject · 18/09/2012 14:40

My friend borrowed dd2's buggy to truck some big bags of clothing back to her house. She then left it outside in the pouring rain overnight. It has faded to a light red colour now. Two months on I'm still fuming but because she's a delicate soul I kept my trap shut. She sent her ds back with it the following morning. I'm sure she would have let me think it had stayed in her porch had it not been sopping wet. I know it would have been nicked if it hadn't rained as its a new Maclaren (I won it in a comp) Angry

Birdsgottafly · 18/09/2012 14:42

Does anyone in the area have cats?

Where i live it would be stolen, but if it wasn't it would be stinking of cats wee, very quickly.

Considering it's still spider season, it will also be full of webs, or insects.

Ask them if they would leave their mattress outside and then sleep on it.

ddubsgirl · 18/09/2012 14:46

my twins buggy got stolen,we lived in a block of flats and were top floor, was near xmas time and i found paintings from ds1 downstairs on the floor :( buggy was on the landing ooutside our front door, someone had left the main door open.

Veryfrustratedandfedup · 18/09/2012 14:47

JeremyKylesPetProject, what your friend did was disgusting. I wouldn't have kept quiet about it if I were you.

JeremyKylesPetProject · 18/09/2012 15:05

Its hard Veryfrustratedandfedup believe me. Normally I'd be all over it but she is having a very tough time at the moment. I'll never let her borrow it again and I'm in two minds whether to keep the DVDs she lent me or return them scratched to buggery... Hmm

StormGlass · 18/09/2012 15:11

YANBU.

I know someone who lives near me who left her buggy outside the front door when she got home (about a month ago). She went back outside 10 minutes later to get it in - and found a man in one of those scrap metal pick-up trucks about to load it on the back of the truck. He made some feeble excuse about thinking she'd left the buggy out because she didn't want it anymore Hmm and then left very quickly.

LydiasMiletus · 18/09/2012 15:18

they get knicked all the time.
But what is the reason? For example is the relative elderly and can not get it in.
There could be situations where yabu and need to think of a way round it.
