to take another job when Ive been offered one already?

after a looooong job search with many knock backs/rejections Ive finally been offered a job (aftrer initally being knocked back from it for the most absurd reason Ive ever heard) so I can leave my shithole of a current job and the arses I work for. Yay! Smile x infinity

Ive accepted the offer and am just sorting out a start date

But Ive today been informed that I have a second interview with another company I saw a few weeks ago that I really REALLY liked.

Im in a total dilemma, the professional part of me says cancel the second interview, as I have already been offered and accepted a job. The selfish part of me is saying go for it, its more money, its closer to home (I could walk there and therefore save about £160-£200 a month on petrol so would be about £400 better off a month including the increase in salary) and the job is more varied so would offer more scope in the future.

Im jumping the gun massively but thinking ahead if I am offered this other role my initial reaction is I know Id want to take it. We could start saving up for the kids future, maybe go on a Butlins or similar holiday (not had a hol of any sort for 10 years), basically not have to be a complete skinflint as I would if I stayed with the first offer.

AIBU to continue with the second interview and see what happens? And if I am offered AIBU to let the first company down?

It's a no-brainer! I think you know what it are going to do too ;-) Seriously though, I would go with the second job and think of your future in the position.

Good luck!

oop sorry that was longer than intended.

Forgot to add the companies are not in the same industry so no chance of it following me about IYSWIM

I'm sure this must happen all the time. I would definately go for the second job just don't mention it to the new job until you know you have got the second one. Good luck though, i hope you get the one you want. Tis a good place to be in and no doubt you deserve it.

VenetiaLanyon · 17/09/2012 11:23

Go ahead with the second interview; rather awkward and not pleasant to have to bin the first offer, but understandable. There is little room for sentimentality in business; you know that the first company would get rid of you without a backwards glance if they suddenly had a headcount freeze which meant that they could no longer sign your contract.

Can you have the interview very quickly, so as not to muck people about too much?

vodkaandcaviar · 17/09/2012 11:25

It's your life and it's up to you to take the job you want. I had a friend in this exact situation last year (even down to the location of the job!) and she went for the second interview and has been working for them since.

I know it's what I'd do if I was lucky enough to be in that situation.

atacareercrossroads · 17/09/2012 11:25

Weeellll Bing I thought I knew it was a no brainer, but the part of my conscience in her smart business suit with her professional head on is saying "no, its so unprofessional, its just tough it has worked out like this"

DP was also a little bit Hmm when I mentioned what I was thinking. His reasoning is that I 'fought' for this job (by just asking for a bit more feedback than what I got, which apparantly made them change their minds Confused) so it would not be on if I let them down.

gah! Why did I ask his opinion. Bastard.

Yes interview is very quick, Id find out if I got it before I start for the new company so I wouldnt exactly be wasting their time training me up.

this might be the easiest solved AIBU ever Grin

Go for the interview. Life is too short to knock back chances that you really want to follow what you really want to do. There is no guarantee that the interview will lead to a job offer but at least you'll have tried rather than be left wondering "what if...?"

atacareercrossroads · 17/09/2012 11:47

Yep Ive made my mind up, I'll go for the other interview and if I get offered I think Id be daft not to take it. It would be awful to be so unprofessional but its not just about me, the extra money would really help us all.

Having been on the receiving end of having someone recruited and contracted doing a runner for a better job, I totally understand the reasoning behind it but didn't appreciate not being told that they were going for the interview as it made the timing for finding a potential replacement really awkward (and subsequently left a lot of folk in the lurch). Sorry to put a dampner on it!

PowerDresser · 17/09/2012 11:55

Will you decline the offered job to go for the second interview? Or will you hold onto the offer while having the second interview?

If you decline the first job offer, isn't it possible that you would not be offered a job following the second interview? That way, you would have no job except the one you are currently in that you don't like.

atacareercrossroads · 17/09/2012 15:19

No no dampner at all, Ive also been on the receiving end of someone doing this. I dont want to tell them though as I cant see them being happy about it, not the best way to start with a company if I dont get this second job! I have come to the way of thinking that the company wont think twice of ditching me if they need to because of purse strings etc so for once I am going to think about Number 1 (and 2, 3 and 4 counting my family!)

Power - Ive already accepted the offer so will have that if I get this other job or not.

It is not a remotely unprofessional thing to do OP.
It's business, not personal.
No big company has your best interests at heart, just their own bottom line. You have to think about your own bottom line.
With millions currently unemployed no company is going to have a hard time finding a replacement for you if you bale.
Good Luck!
(Can I have the job you don't want?)

TroublesomeEx · 17/09/2012 16:22

Go for the second interview and good luck.

atacareercrossroads · 17/09/2012 16:25

Thanks guys :) its later this week. Am really nervous about this one!

msrisotto · 17/09/2012 16:25

Definitely go for the interview. You haven't signed a contract yet have you? And as someone e,se said, they'd cut you loose without a second thought if they needed to. This is business, this kind of thing happens all the time. Good luck!

jellybaby25 · 17/09/2012 17:00

Definitely go for the interview for the second job. You'd be mad not to!

jellybaby25 · 17/09/2012 17:01

As someone has already stated, employers would have no qualms in getting rid of you if they needed to.
