And feel Phil Oakey in the song comes across as nothing more than a deluded arrogant stalker?

OP posts:

Don't stand so close to me is not an example of Sting's paedo leanings! If I remember correctly, he wrote it following on from his experience as a teacher during which time he himself felt uncomfortable from the attentions of predatory teenage girls.

And Every breath you take, though I agree the words alone could sound a bit stalkerish, is actually a fantastic song.

Porky glad you love it too! My husband introduced me to Dare and basically everything else from early/mid 80s (I was born the year it came out so wasn't really into my vinyl yet!).

Agree with OP re Dont you want my baby btw. I could put my fist through the radio/tv every time I hear it.

PropertyNightmare · 16/09/2012 16:23

Yabu. That song is a proper tune.

I hated it at the time. But like so many nostalgia things, I quite like it now.

I don't think he was a sleaze bag in the song.

Are people seriously suggesting that The Police's 'Don't stand so close to me' indicates paedo leanings? How silly.

What about Boom Town Rats' 'Mary of the 4th form' (4th form equating to a Year 10 girl)

Or Ringo Starr's 'You're 16, your beautiful, and your mine'

Or many others

Good to see other Dare lovers here. Seconds is the best album track ever (today)

And, yyy, that awful car advert with that moronic "band"of kerazy "musicians" singing Ever Fallen in Love- shoot the tv time.

SwedishEdith · 16/09/2012 17:16

What about Gary Puckett 'Young Girl' for dodgy lyrics? "My love for you is way out of line" Hmm

aquashiv · 16/09/2012 17:19

A right old numpty used to sing me this song at school it always makes me feel physically sick when I hear it.

That's the rationalisation I remember Sting giving about the song, Dumbledoresgirl.
