Car insurance...I mean WTAF?

I am in the process of trying to insure my car which is a real old one. It's from 1998 and cost me a grand total of £250 on eBay! It belonged to an elderly man and had done less than 50k from new.

I am a Carer for my son who is autistic with ADHD, as such a car is vital for me but this £250 car is the best I can afford.

The costs of insuring it are driving me mad though.

Given that the bloody car is only worth £200 according to their valuation stuff the quotes I am getting are sky high. Anything from £350 with like £100 deposit (as I obviously just have a spare £100 lying about Hmm) to £1500 Hmm.

The third party quotes are even higher!

Cheapest I can find is esure/Sheila's Wheels which for various reasons declines me as soon as I try to buy from them..their site goes all the way through the process and then tells me that they can no longer offer me cover just as I get to the screen before paying.

I mean WTAF is going on here.....I am sick of trawling the price comparison sites to find the deposits are sky high or that my car is too lowly for them to even sniff at.

AIBU to think they are just taking the piss.Angry?

Bastards!

I'm currently paying £150 a month. Ridiculous! I cannot wait until renewal time-I have been royally fucked over after a house move and a 'new' car (new being a tiny ford ka worth 900)

i currently have 4 cars insured 2 of them are what i concider to be fun cars, jap imports modified within an inch of there lives 1 for drifting and one for drag both cost me less than 160 a year fully comp each.

it may be worth trying classic car insurance lots of companies have 99 as the cut off but remember most cc policys wont let you either use or increase a ncd.

Classic car policies vary in acceptable risks, Cherished Car Insurance will only cover vehicles over 15 years old, but I think there are others who insure younger cars. Although it may not be an issue for you, they almost always have a restricted mileage limit (e.g. 7500 per year). If it's anything like the policy I have, it's a hard limit (i.e. cover stops when you reach that mileage) rather than the normal, "you're covered but your excess has tripled" penalty for going over.

Try Swinton, OP. that's who I found to be cheapest when I renewed this year, plus they are doing breakdown cover with the first three months free.

Have you called your current insurer to see if they will match the lowest quote you've had? Often they will to keep your custom. My DS is 20 and pays £600 a year through Admiral on a Ford KA, when his renewal came through it was for £900 but he did a compare the market, got a much cheaper quote with Elephant and Admiral matched it.

You say that two insurers let you go all the way through the process then wouldn't insure you at the end - this is a disadvantage of getting quotes online.

I'd suggest you ring the companies directly and ask why you're being refused. It seems odd that they won't let you complete the quote. I've found that the customers services are usually very helpful.

Someone above said that you always get a cheaper price by changing insuers, this isn't true at all. Most insurers ime will match a cheaper quote if you ask them.
