Please. Can anyone help me? I'm desperate. Am coping brilliantly with new gf life, but can't stop thinking about donuts.

They are everywhere. Especially those huge £2 trays at the front of Asda.

I just want one donut.

Any suggestions.

It's proper desperate like.

Put it out of your mind. There is nothing comparable in gf world to doughnuts - and I've tried a few v expensive ones in Canada or the US.

Part of a successful gf life is accepting that you can't substitute everything - I've done it for 14 years now

LargeLatte · 15/09/2012 20:20

What about a GF iced bun then, that would do. I have successfully made gf scones and cupcakes, but I miss the bread / icing combo.

Will have to dig out a receipe I think.

CMOT recipe site suggestions? Useful to know that even expensive US gf donuts are rubbish before I spend my money, thanks.

Whistle - you are not helping as I am now dreaming of those donut finger things with cream and jam down the middle - Envy

OP - try this GF chat board - there is a supplement section full of stored recommended eateries, and lots of tried and tested recipes

members2.boardhost.com/glutenfree/

this is a GF donut recipe here

coeliac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=puds&action=display&thread=3033

theres another on there somewhere called something like jam donut muffins, that are supposed to be very like a donut, but I cant find it just now!

CMOTDibbler · 15/09/2012 20:35

Nigella has a jam donut muffin recipe - its nice in itself, but not a doughnut iykwim.

I've never managed a nice iced bun either I'm afraid. The nearest I've come is the Lifestyle cherry danish

phantomnamechanger · 15/09/2012 20:39

the recipe I know of is by a GF chef, not nigella, I just cant remember exactly what it was called - Mrs something's jam donut muffins - i think it came from a school dinner lady or similar originally

by all accounts they are lush, but I must confess never to have had the time to try them, although I do do lots of GF baking, DD has been dx coeliac 7 yrs now - it gets easier OP!

RadioSilence · 15/09/2012 21:05

You need a book called Totally Flour Free Baking by Dinah Alison . She uses ground almonds in place of flour and all the recipes I have tried so far have been great.

LargeLatte · 15/09/2012 21:08

Brill thanks. Excited to try out my baking.

MrsSnow · 15/09/2012 22:08

I was going to suggest the GF message board, there is a recipe on there for doughnuts so don't panic. To be honest Doves Farm plain flour adapts really well so just follow a gluten recipe using Doves Farm.

Dollydowser · 15/09/2012 22:08

YANBU. My close friend is a coeliac and had a hankering for donuts, so when my MIL wanted to get rid of her deep fat fryer, I gave it to my friend who cleaned it out and made some gluten free donuts in it. She hasn't ever made them again, not sure if its because they weren't up to scratch or because she just hasn't got around to it. Will ask and find out the recipe if you want?

HaveALittleFaith · 15/09/2012 22:10

I'm GF and ever since I got pregnant all I want is wheat! I'll be venturing over to the GF board that I never knew existed before! YANBU to want a doughnut no. I really want a bagel.

phantomnamechanger · 16/09/2012 13:06

this is an excellent internet/mail order GF firm, everything baked to order and dispatched ready to be eaten or frozen - over so many items its free delivery too - I regularly buy DD a mixed box of sliced GF bread, and then croisants, danish pastries, sausages rolls, theres such a lot of variety and though all GF is more expensive than regular types, I think the prices compare with supermarket brands, and are tastier. Helpful if you live far from a good GF stockist.

they might even do bagels have a little

JuliaScurr · 16/09/2012 13:18

genius! tragically you have to order 6 items. oh dear. Smile sadly,no bagels

jellybeans · 16/09/2012 14:12

I have been gf for a while now and there was a stage where I got abit 'down' over what i couldn't eat-maybe 6 months after diagnosis when it sinks in. Never again being able to eat my fave foods and the sheer inconvienience and cost involved not to mention the massive calories in gf cakes etc compared to normal. In addition the ignorance that many people have; people still buy me biscuits etc. for my birthday (not gf ones!) and many assume it is fussiness or dieting or that I am vegetarian. It can be pretty isolating. Luckily I have other wider (not literally!) family members who are also coeliacs so we have our own 'corner' at family parties Grin

The good news is that those felings have passed and my diet now is fab as it is 100% healthier. I am the slimmest I have been in years (I was typically one of the slightly overweight coeliacs on diagnosis) and make most things from scratch and still have lots of treats. Now it doesn't bother me at all being coeliac. Well maybe just the odd time..

bigsnugglebunny · 16/09/2012 16:41

Not a doughnut... but the GF chocolate cherry cake in M&S is absolutely divine. Nicest GF cake I've ever eaten!

I miss doughnuts too Sad

sandberry · 16/09/2012 17:40

Trip to Camden cookiesandscream.com/index.html. Best doughnuts I've had for a while and didn't taste gluten free.
