To think MNers are hypocrites when it comes to the Daily Mail?

You read it, I read it, we all read it (um..read in the loosest sense of the word) but admit it, we all have a dirty little Daily Mail habit.

So what's with all the grovelling apologies? "sorry for DM link" "klaxon Daily Fail alert". Why not take it for what it is? Ajoke of a newspaper that is crass and xenophobic, but nevertheless is hugely entertaining and popular? No need to feel ashamed, people...

I am SnowWide and I read the Daily mail.

MadgeHarvey · 15/09/2012 19:18

I am Madge (sometimes!) and I will happily admit to reading it - particularly the side panel of shame!

Cordrazine · 15/09/2012 19:19

I love the showbiz section, never even look at the rest of it.

FushiaFernica · 15/09/2012 19:19

I am FushiaFernica and I also read the Daily Mail and only started reading it since heard comments about it on Mumsnet.

TheGoldenKnid · 15/09/2012 19:19

I do not read the Daily Mail! Shock I'm sure I'm not the only one here who doesn't, though it sometimes feels like it!

SuperB0F · 15/09/2012 19:20

I only look at the pictures.

SauvignonBlanche · 15/09/2012 19:21

I never read it, I occasionally see it over someone's shoulder, it's vile.
I always think less of a person who reads it.

Teeb · 15/09/2012 19:23

Hi, my names Teeb and I'm a closet Daily Mail (entertainment online only) reader!

I think they've actually been very clever in designing their website in an easy and functional layout, with free content and plenty of trash that people want to click on, that draws in a wide audience who may not approve of the Daily Mail ethos but come back time and gain for what they provide. Very ahead of the ball and astute of them.

SnowWide · 15/09/2012 19:23

super that is what reading the Mail means- looking at pictures!!! Who gives a shit about the articles? Have you read them? Riddled with typos and glaring errors. MNers would have a fit!

larks35 · 15/09/2012 19:25

You are not alone TheGoldenKnid and I am hugely thankful to posters who warn of a DM link. I hate that poor excuse of a newspaper with a passion! Peddling miserly, bigotted, celeb-obsessive shite. I hate it more than the red-tops, although I strongly dislike them also. TBH, I don't really like any newspaper. They all have an agenda.

squeakytoy · 15/09/2012 19:26

I am Squeaky and have no embarassment in admitting to reading the online DM.

Reading it does not mean I support and agree with all their views or articles.

I would never judge anyone for reading it.

There is nothing stopping other newspapers to put their articles online in an easy to navigate site, but they dont, so for now I shall continue to read the DM.

OHforDUCKScake · 15/09/2012 19:28

Guilty!

It makes me cringe, but I still read it.

Its a terrible paper. Its SO WHITE. Like this village I live in.

But that ignorance aside, it entertains me.

MySpanielHell · 15/09/2012 19:28

Hi, my name is Spaniel and I read the Daily Mail whenever I stay at my parents' house (which is quite a lot).

SnowWide · 15/09/2012 19:30

No no no.... No cringing, no shame. You will NOT be judged. Grin

larks Does this mean you wont click on a link, if you have been alerted? Even if its something close to your heart?

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 15/09/2012 19:30

I also find the typos glaringly atrocious.

Yesterday, on what should have been a sensitive article about a murdered childs funeral, the coffin was covered in a "feather bower", and the horse's head had a pink "bridal" on it.. Hmm

And that was just in the first paragraph. I checked it again now, and those errors are still there...

ouryve · 15/09/2012 19:31

I've never bought a copy in my life and will no longer even click on a link if I realise it's a DM link because I don't even want them to have the potential advertising revenue.

LadyWidmerpool · 15/09/2012 19:31

Really, there is a lot else out there that 's actually worth reading

ModernToss · 15/09/2012 19:31

I detest the Mail and its political and moral stance.

I also read the Sidebar of Shame on a daily basis.

gordyslovesheep · 15/09/2012 19:31

YABU not to say SOME MN'ers - I really do not read it

SuperB0F · 15/09/2012 19:31

I thought I'd give a twist to "I only buy it for the articles" Grin

gordyslovesheep · 15/09/2012 19:32

(well except to catch up, you know ...on what the opposition are thinking ...but that's research erm yes - that is all )

startwig1982 · 15/09/2012 19:35

Never read it. We have The Times delivered every day as we're interested in current affairs... Grin

Zara1984 · 15/09/2012 19:37

I'm Zara and I'm a not-so-secret DM online reader. I"m a total hypocrite in that I judge people who read the print version!!

Would it make you all feel better if I told you that virtually all the female staff and interns at the human rights NGO I work at check it daily for celeb twaddle??? Grin Blush

Agree with what another poster has said about their very very astute website design.

I defend myself by saying I read the Guardian, Economist and FT for real news.....

larks35 · 15/09/2012 19:37

Yes snow it does mean I won't click on the link and further inflate their "popularity". If the story sounds interesting enough then I do a quick search and read about it elsewhere.

Would like to add that I do have friends and MIL family who read the DM. They try to hide it from me now Blush as they know my opinion on it. I do not judge them for choosing to read it, but do challenge them when it is obvious that their opinion about society has come from the DM. (This is probably why they hide their chosen reading matter from me!)

notsofrownieface · 15/09/2012 19:38

My name is notso and I have a Daily Mail habit. It started last year. It is so bad that I even comment sometimes.

To balance it out I am a top commentor on the Guardian on Facebook.

Hangs head in shame.

Can it be forgiven?

DizzyKipper · 15/09/2012 19:38

Nope I don't read it, I don't open the links either - I don't want to in any way increase their revenue. I'm sure there are a lot of MNers who read it, more than enough link to it, but not all of us do.
